10. Dear members of the Alamo Heights City Council:
I remain somewhat mystified over the reluctance of the Review Board to agree outright to the
demolition of the Alamo Heights High School, in order to build a new high school classroom
building on the property at 6900 Broadway.
I don’t know if you have visited the High School lately, but it is well past the time to modernize
it. And the only way to accomplish this is with an entirely new building. For example, the HVAC
system has been unreliable for years. I retired from the library in 2000, and we were on speed-
dial with the maintenance and the technology departments. The demands of technology didn’t
exist when the current building was constructed in the 1950’s. Security in the form of locked
doors and limited access was also unheard of, even as late as five years ago.
Those who are familiar with remodeling as opposed to rebuilding will tell you that trying to
remodel is much more expensive and inefficient. In the case of AHHS, remodeling would leave
columns in the middle of classrooms that need to be enlarged to accommodate new seating
arrangements. Newer more updated curriculum offerings require more technology that should
not be pieced together as is often the case now.
Architectural plans call for a similar façade. The improvements will be accomplished by adding
a third story to the main building. Blessedly, only a few of the existing oak trees will be
sacrificed.
I am aware that AHHS is sort of a landmark for the community, but the new building will
function in the same way on the property. Please give your approval to the request for
demolition of the current high school building.
Kindest personal regards,
Sarah Joe LeMessurier
