Social determinants of health: Exploring how to put health research into action using data and mapping
This webinar will explore various ways to put health research into action by using data and mapping tools. We’ll use the Social Determinants of Health as a frame to present examples of ways to map services in your selected geography, how to map demographic and health data such as poverty and education; and how to work with different features on HealthyCity.org to support your work.
How do you measure what matters in your community?
Rather than starting from scratch, one approach that’s gaining traction is using shared impact measurement tools like the Canadian Index of Wellbeing.
Hang on a second. What’s the Canadian Index of Wellbeing?
First and foremost, the CIW is a big idea that regards wellbeing as encompassing a wide variety of aspects of life, beyond economic measures like Gross Domestic Product (GDP). It’s also a tool that is measuring what matters to Canadians. It tracks wellbeing from year to year in an effort to offer clear, effective, and regular information on the quality of life of all Canadians.
In a series of Pecha-Kucha style presentations (each limited to 20 slides with 20 seconds per slide), you’ll learn how five organizations across Canada are working with the Canadian Index of Wellbeing to measure what matters in their communities. The presenters include:
Dan Wilson, Director, Policy, Planning and Performance, Ontario Trillium Foundation
Robert Janus, Director of Communications, Victoria Foundation
Barbara Powell, General Manager of Community Engagement, City of Guelph
Nancy Mattes, Director, Social Prosperity Wood Buffalo
Denise C. Squire, Executive Director, Woolwich Community Health Centre
After the rapid-fire overview, you’ll have a chance to take a bit of a deeper dive in a series of group discussions led by our presenters as we unpack the challenges of measuring impact and the potential benefits of shared or common measurement frameworks like the Canadian Index of Wellbeing.

Faith Organizations and the 2020 Census: Connecting Communities Through the P...TechSoup
The 2020 Census is online for the first time ever, posing real hurdles for communities with limited internet access to get connected and be counted. At the same time, we have all been forced online by the COVID-19 pandemic and may be yet for months to come.
Fair Count, a nonprofit nonpartisan organization, founded by Stacey Abrams, has been working with faith-based organizations to ensure they have the tools they need to connect with their community during this crisis. In addition, Fair Count is working to ensure their communities are counted and ultimately able to continue using good, simple technologies to keep connecting with their communities beyond
Join this webinar led by Fair Count who will share how they’ve built a movement to:
- engage faith leaders to help educate their communities about the upcoming census, coordinate mobilization efforts and increase Internet access in places with low connectivity
- support communities with zero or limited Internet connectivity to get online and get counted
- increase civic participation in communities that are often undercounted and underserved long after the census has ended
Advancing Racial Equity through Community Engagement in Collective ImpactLiving Cities
Tackling racial inequalities head on is critical to dramatically improving results for low-income people. As a starting point, equitable collaboration with people of color is critical to ensure that social change efforts are informed by the lived experience of the communities they seek to benefit.
Our webinar explored how to ensure that community residents influence the design and direction of collective impact initiatives. View the slides for insights from our panel of cross-sector leaders working to advance racial equity.

Science tells us good relationships are key to happiness and so is a strong sense of community. Start right next to home by making friends with your neighbors to increase your happiness and the happiness of those around you.
First published in 2014 as part of a peer reviewed essay Happiness in Public Policy (http://scholarworks.waldenu.edu/jsc/vol6/iss1/5/) The policy-screening tool provides 26 factors in the domains of happiness. Policies or projects are rated by the factors that are relevant. Not all factors in the tool will necessarily be relevant. Decision-makers choose which factors to use. Decision-makers may develop other factors not included in the tool. Origins
Kunzang Lhamu, Chief Research Officer of the GNH Commission in Bhutan, worked with the Happiness Alliance, a small nonprofit based in the US to create a hybrid happiness policy screening tool for adaptation and adaption by local governments and agencies in the United States.
We challenge you to practice gratitude every day for the next year. The research connecting gratitude practices with happiness have been established. Practicing gratitude makes you happier.

Slides for the ISQOLS webinar featuring John C. Havens, author of Heartificial Intelligence, and presenter at the ISQOLS 2017 conference, and Executive Director of The IEEE Global Initiative for Ethical Considerations in Artificial Intelligence and Autonomous Systems.
The algorithms powering autonomous systems and Artificial Intelligence are driving the future of society. Imbued within our cars, companion robots and smart cities, we are becoming a culture of code. The risks and benefits regarding these technologies are largely evaluated through the lens of GDP-focused, exponential growth.
But when robots and algorithms diminish individual agency by making decisions on our behalf, when the liability of their actions becomes too complex to assess or when Artificial Intelligence (AI) and robotics are transforming our jobs, we must question if this will increase or decrease our well-being. Humans can’t thrive unless metrics prioritizing positive mental and emotional health are elevated as key indicators of a flourishing society.
Heartificial Intelligence - the Intersection of Emerging Technology Beyond GDP features John C. Havens, Executive Director of The IEEE Global Initiative for Ethical Considerations in Artificial Intelligence and Autonomous Systems who will describe initial efforts to introduce Beyond GDP metrics into the AI community in an effort to prioritize human wellbeing for the creation and proliferation of these technologies. The goal of The IEEE Global Initiative's work is to invite cross-disciplinary research between technologists, engineers, and the Wellbeing / Happiness community to advance AI and robotics in a way that redefines innovation with a focus on flourishing versus exponential growth.
