Editor's Notes

  1. NCPC the umbrella charitable body for palliative care: Influences government policy; Supports all sectors involved in providing, commissioning and using hospice and palliative care services; Promotes palliative care for all; Provides guidance on best practice Members of Dying Matters include: NHS, voluntary and independent health and care sectors, including hospices, care homes, charities supporting old people, children and bereavement, from social care and housing sectors, faith organisations, community organisations, schools and colleges, academic bodies, trade unions, the legal profession and from the funeral sector Our members are working together to encourage people to talk about their wishes including where they want to die and their funeral plans with friends, family and loved ones

NCPC as a policy/guidance organisation with a membership of health and social care professionals constantly received calls/emails from public wanting help/support so the need was there A website was always going to be a crucial part of the Dying Matters Coalition Led by NCPC but a small number of staff and no helpline Providing as much info and support for people as possible Many other organisations can help and support people, but we can link them all together and send people in the right direction No point duplicating work

Ruled out – complicated over-technical site Ruled out - too much clever functionality NHS - Internet Explorer 6 Slow internet connections / dial up / old computers Short succinct content with messages to match – remember focus on public, not professionals Too many websites baffle and confuse Good, simple signposting Old people internet access and technical skills
  4. We’re very proud of it but aware of limitations Basic site with common functions Accessible, DDA compliant
  5. User feedback overwhelmingly positive People liked the ‘Look and feel’ Users experience was good, comfortable with navigation, ease of use high Blog problem – spamming etc. Technical fix. Realisation that regular updates of ‘live’ features like blog are crucial to building and retaining interest. How to develop and enhance the site? Many ways including sharing other peoples’ content (seamless user experience) but mainly by growing our online community and making it a two-way user experience. Over to Sarah...
