SMALL COMPANIES
Advantages:
• Simple organization structure
• flexible management
• quick reaction
Disadvantages:
• Focus on final product quality directly and ignore
quality in process
Example:
• No standard process for delivery a CAD pattern to
manufacturing department. If the pattern lost,
manufacturing department will come to CAD room and
request a new one again. Thanks for the simple
organization structure, this re-request process is very quick.
But this process still waste time, money and energy.
Wastes of these kinds are hidden in all processes related
to manufacturing.
This project focuses on TQM (Total Quality
Management) implementation in a small manufacturing
company that targets reduction of such wastes by
controlling all processes. ISO 9001 is the quality
management system that will be used for this purpose.
Thermaxx Jackets, founded over 25 years ago, manufacture many sizes
of pipe and valve insulation blankets for dozens of common components.
In addition, they design and implement custom insulation solutions for
the most unique and complex insulation challenges.
Organization Structure
Thermaxx has functional
organization structure. Each staff
may hold multiple positions, which
requires clear definitions of roles
and responsibilities.
Manufacturing Process
Thermaxx makes custom products.
Therefore, the manufacturing
process of each product is different
based on design and materials.
ISO9001 in Thermaxx
ISO 9001 is not just a set of files
It is a management system which requires participation from
all employees. Don’t just let it stay on paper. Most important
thing is to use these standards and ideas to improve the
quality in process.
Localization
Each company has it’s feature. Adjust the ISO9001 standards
to fit the company. ISO 9001 is a tool to help company to
improve quality management. Understanding the idea of ISO
9001 is more important than just follow and trust it blindly.
Step by Step
One of the advantages a small company has is to be able to
react quickly. It’s easier to implement a new process, and the
company can adopt to work with the new process quickly. But
this doesn’t mean they can realize ISO 9001 quality
management in one day. It will take time, becauseISO9001
affects all aspects of manufacturing in the company and
people need time to understand and learn to use it.

a document number is assigned
and added in this index.

According to ISO 9001, all the
processes under control must
include these documents. Fig4 is
the procedure of documents
control.
1. Continue working with each department to formalize
documents and standardize processes to meet ISO 9001
requirements.
2. Check operation state of published ISO 9001 standards
regularly.
3. Keep training and improving ISO 9001 idea in company.
