Iron deficiency anemia is the most common type of anemia and occurs when the body does not have enough iron. Iron is needed to make hemoglobin. Common causes of iron deficiency include inadequate iron intake, iron malabsorption, short intervals between births, and pregnancy with multiple babies. Symptoms include fatigue, weakness, pale skin, irregular heartbeats, shortness of breath, dizziness, chest pain, and cold hands and feet. Treatment involves oral or parental iron supplements, dietary changes to include more iron-rich foods, and blood transfusions in severe cases. Complications can include depression, heart problems, increased infections, and pregnancy issues.
