Hacking the Faculty: Bringing Content Discovery Into Online Course Development
Presentation given at Computers in Libraries, in April 2014.
Original Proposal/Abstract: Discovering resources is easier than ever, yet barriers remain for faculty trying to embed quality content into online courses. Course development tools are silo-ed away from content discovery systems, so faculty must leave the Learning Management System (LMS) to seek articles and e-books, then navigate back to the LMS to paste the link. They need to know how to identify persistent URLs and how to enable off-campus access. The process is tedious and fraught with pitfalls. At the University of Central Florida, the Library and the Center for Distributed Learning collaborated to integrate content discovery and selection seamlessly into course creation. The result, dubbed Library Tool, is presented as a simple icon in the LMS on the page-creation form. Library Tool opens a simple search form which returns a results list of full text articles. Faculty can add any article to their page with a single click. The Tool leverages the Learning Tools Interoperability (LTI) standards and EBSCO's API, which can be easily adapted by other institutions. The presenters will demonstrate the Library Tool in action and briefly describe the development process as well as an overview of the LTI standard and the EDS API. Finally, we will share preliminary usage and faculty response and will discuss options for future developments.

The Westlake Initiative for Innovation introduced iPads to all students and faculty at Westlake High School. Over 1,600 iPads were distributed to enhance student engagement, motivation, and learning. Teachers received training on integrating the iPads into their lessons. Students reported using the iPads to interact with content, communicate, and collaborate more than before. The initiative aims to promote a digital learning environment and develop 21st century skills in students.

April 17th Westlake High School Visit

Keynote Speaker: Vijay Kumar
Dr. Vijay Kumar is Senior Associate Dean of Undergraduate Education and Director of the Office of Educational Innovation and Technology, DUE at MIT. In this capacity he provides leadership for sustainable technology-enabled educational innovation at MIT. In his prior roles at MIT as Assistant Provost and Director of Academic Computing, as well at other institutions, Vijay provided leadership for units engaged in delivering infrastructure and services for the effective integration of information technology and media services in education. Vijay was the Principal Investigator of O.K.I (Open Knowledge Initiative), a MIT-led collaborative project to develop an open architecture for enterprise educational applications.
Vijay is a member of the Advisory Committee of MIT OpenCourseWare (OCW) and a member of the steering committee for I-Campus, the MIT-Microsoft Alliance initiative for educational technology. He is the Executive officer for MIT's Council on Educational Technology. Vijay also served on the Applications Strategy Council for Internet2, as a Trustee of the Corporation for Research and Education Networking (CREN), Chair of the Boards of the Seminars on Academic Computing (SAC) Snowmass, CO and NERCOMP.
Vijay is an active champion of open education efforts: As an honorary Advisor to India's National Knowledge Commission he has been engaged in advancing Open and technology enabled initiatives for educational access and quality in India; He is actively involved in efforts, such as those supported by the Hewlett Foundation, and Curriki to advance the use of Open Educational Resources for improving educational access and quality. He is also an advisor to the Open University of Catalonia.
Vijay has recently co-edited "Opening Up Education: The Collective Advancement of Education through Open Technology, Open Content and Open Knowledge " (MIT Press, August 2008), a book sponsored by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching.

The OLS (Online Learning Support) is undergoing renovation to better serve OTEN (Open Training and Education Network) students. In 2012, there were over 2 million OLS logins and students visited unit pages over 5 million times. 92.4% of OTEN students accessed the OLS and 62% submitted assessments through it. Student feedback showed the current OLS has too much information and not enough interaction. The renovation will simplify the interface and facilitate more interaction between students. What started as a cosmetic update evolved into a full redesign. An OLS Project Control Group was formed to oversee the renovation through extensive consultation, testing, and content migration to implement the changes by December 1, 2013.
