The Illinois Virtual High School
• IVHS Mission Statement
– To use new and emerging technologies that expand the
boundaries of space and time to provide Illinois students and
their teachers with increased equity and access to the highest
quality educational opportunities

IVHS Goals
• Assure equitable access to rich and varied learning
opportunities for Illinois students, with emphasis on curricular
areas needed to ensure that all students can meet the Illinois
Learning Standards and succeed in higher education and the
workplace;

• Expand high-quality professional development opportunities
for Illinois teachers and other educators; and

• Support schools in integrating technology into teaching and
learning.


IVHS Pilot – 2001 (A Space Odyssey??)

• Offered 16 courses for potential enrollment
• 97 registrations for 12 full-semester courses were
requested from 33 schools
• 195 registrations for 10 AP reviews were requested
from 36 schools
• A+ Certification Preparedness, Network+
Certification Preparedness, ESL and Oceanography
were most popular courses
• 127 high schools signed up for participation


The IVHS Synchronous Decision
• Originally implemented to address languages
as a venue for writing and speaking.
• Developed to include other disciplines and
then faculty and administrative meetings.
• Available to all subject areas. Used more
frequently in Foreign Languages, Math and
Science.
• Elluminate is accessed directly on the
homepage of all IVHS students and
instructors.

• What I enjoy most about the course is the
elluminate classroom meetings.
• I would like to have more than one session a
week.
• There is not a lot of student to student interaction.
Mr. Szabo talks too much!
• I can’t make the scheduled times.

understanding
– To present animations that are important to student
understanding
– Power Point Presentations act as class notes
– Common Web Site access / web “touring”
– Visual problem solving activities
– One-on-one tutoring

students throughout the state of Illinois
– I have also worked with students in Michigan, Texas,
Connecticut, Pennsylvania and Newfoundland, Canada

messaging, and polling
• Classes meet irregularly


Mike Barbour - Observations
• The students who regularly attend synchronous
sessions are the ones who seem most engaged in the
course
• I have better relationships, both academic and non-
academic, with the students that I interact with
synchronously
• The use of synchronous communications can build
more meaningful relationships with students
• Synchronous communication can address student
issues much quicker than asynchronous
communications

Administrative Observations

– Greater student-teacher relationships
– Good group project results
– Confusion getting elluminate loaded the first time and
initial meetings organized.


Elluminate Live! Integration

• Currently “Integrated” with:
– eCollege / eClassroom
– Blackboard
• Integration in Development
– WebCT
• Elluminate Software Development Kit (SDK)
– Provide clients with tools necessary to integrate
Elluminate Live! into almost any LMCS / LMS / CMS
provider
