This Tin Hau Temple in Joss House Bay - 大廟灣 天后廟 , HK is the fourth of my Powerpoint series on Chinese architecture. The others were the Forbidden City - Beijing , Cheng Hoon Teng – Chinese temple in Malacca and the Nan Lian Garden – Diamond Hill Hong Kong.
This temple is unfamiliar to most who live in Hong Kong. This is because of temple is situated at a very remote location, in Hong Kong. There were no village around. In the past you can only go to the temple by boat but in recent years a new road was built near the temple, linking it to the Clear Water Bay.
The most interesting thing about this temple is that it has a very long history, some 800 year old much longer than the present building. Personally I know the temple very well. I went there every year when I was a kid, on the Tin Hau festival. It was not so much for the religious pilgrimage but as a day in the country having a picnic on the hills with family and friends. The Chinese attitude toward religion is much more pragmatic than dogmatic, at least as far as the general population is concerned. It has more to do with rituals than beliefs. To me the temple is a testament to the developing maritime trade in China during the Song Dynasty some 1000 years ago, when the Silk Road was cut off from China. Many of the maritime trades then were inter-provincial trades rather than the overseas trades.

- 2. This is the beautiful entrance of Wat Thai Temple. This temple is the largest Thai temple. The first things that I noticed when I walked in, were the two beautiful sculptures next to the main door of the temple.
- 3. When I first walked in to the main hall of the temple, I noticed these boxes. These boxes are for donations for many different reasons. One of them was for the library of Wat Thai Temple, another one was for education, another one for Monk’s food, and for many other important things.
- 4. This sculpture was the Chinese Buddha. He is almost all the time shown happy and with a big belly. He is often depicted entertaining or being followed by adoring children. His figure throughout the Chinese culture represents contentment.
- 5. When I first walked into the main hall of the temple, these colorful trees caught my attention. Later, I found out that people would put those dollar bills on the tree in order to keep the temple clean and all the other needs of the temple.
- 6. People were praying on their knees in front of the altar of the Buddha. They were very concentrated and into their prayers and were not even paying attention at what was going on around them. They also lit candles while praying.
- 7. Inside the main temple, in the middle, there was this sculpture of Buddha, which was in gold and was surrounded by other small Buddhas. Visitors and Monks were paying their respects to Buddha. People were on their knees and they were bowing down to him as a sign of respect.
- 8. This is a sacred place located outside of the main temple. Before entering to this place, a person should take off his or her shoes. This is a sculpture of God Jatukarm Ramathep, who was also a legend.
- 9. As I was walking around the temple, I noticed this sacred place as well. Many people were praying in front of it without their shoes and on their knees. This sculpture represents God and next to it was Buddha’s head.
- 10. Another sacred place that I walked by was this one. People were also praying to this sculpture. This sculpture is Guanyin who was a chinese God Woman. She represented kindness, luck and mercy.
- 11. Lastly, I would like to add that in the main temple, in front of Buddha, there were little jars as you can see. These jars were for donations from people for certain things that were written on the jars.
