Vault is a tool for securely managing secrets like API keys, passwords, and certificates. It allows users to securely store and tightly control access to tokens, passwords, certificates, API keys and other secrets. Vault handles the lifecycle of secrets, including creation, rotation, revocation and more. It also integrates with Kubernetes to securely provide secrets to pods. Vault uses a client-server architecture and supports authentication through various methods like Kubernetes service accounts.

Introduction to Vault
This session is focused on the Hashicorp vault which is a secret management tool. We can manage secrets for 2-3 environments but what if we have more than 10 environments, then it will become a very painful task to manage them when secrets are dynamic and need to be rotated after some time. Hashicorp vault can easily manage secrets for both static and dynamic also it can help in secret rotations.
Delivering Secret Zero: Vault AppRole with Terraform and Chef
This document discusses using AppRole authentication in Vault to securely deliver authentication tokens to programmatic clients. AppRole allows splitting the authentication process across separate systems by using a static RoleID and unique, single-use SecretID. The RoleID can be distributed openly while the SecretID is delivered securely by systems like Terraform, Chef or Nomad. When combined, the RoleID and SecretID provide a Vault authentication token that follows the principle of least privilege without storing credentials on central systems.

Hootsuite is a social media management platform with over 16 million customers and 1,000 employees worldwide. This document discusses improvements to Hootsuite's infrastructure and security practices for managing secrets and access. It introduces a new tool called OpsKit that helps developers securely access resources through Hashicorp Vault. In this talk, Jan Löffler (Head of Platform Engineering) will share Zalando's experience implementing “Radical Agility” from a DevOps perspective. “Radical Agility” is the Zalando technology team’s multi-pronged approach to managing the complexity that results from building an architecture of massive size. Jan will focus on how microservices enable Zalando’s engineers to move faster and build systems that scale, at scale, and avoid dependencies. He will show how microservices, in conjunction with a cloud infrastructure, support teams as they try strive for autonomy. Finally, he will draw upon his experiences to show how this all works in practice, and discuss what is organizationally and architecturally necessary to make DevOps a top priority for all members of your tech organization.

This is a presentation originally from ChefConf 2015. It includes an introduction to Conjur, a general discussion of delivering compliant workflows and business processes using Chef, a discussion of secrets management and SSH management using Chef and Conjur, and a full hands-on workshop using these tools. At the end of the workshop, participants had learned how to build a self-documenting application pipeline using Conjur and Chef, and how to work with their organization to make this process clear and transparent to security and compliance stakholders.

This document summarizes a workshop on building a self-documenting compliant application using Conjur and Chef. The workshop consists of several parts: (1) an introduction to DevOps and compliance; (2) an overview of Chef secrets management; (3) a practicum building a sample app; (4) a discussion of compliance, Chef best practices, and traceability/auditability; and (5) a wrap up. The goals of the workshop are for attendees to have a deeper understanding of how compliance, access to the Chef server, and secrets management are interrelated and how to implement a delivery pipeline that combines these topics in a self-documenting and automated fashion.
Docker Containers in Azure
The document summarizes a presentation about containers in Azure. It introduces Docker and Kubernetes as tools for running open source applications on Azure. A lot of technical challenges and complexity come with building a cloud-native and distributed architecture. The way we develop backend software has fundamentally changed in the last ten years. Managing a microservices architecture demands a lot of us to ensure observability and operational resiliency. But did you also change the way you run your development teams?
Sven will talk about Atlassian’s journey from a monolith to a multi-tenanted architecture and how it affected the way the engineering teams work. You will learn how we shifted to service ownership, moved to more autonomous teams (and its challenges), and established platform and enablement teams.
Measures in SQL (SIGMOD 2024, Santiago, Chile)
SQL has attained widespread adoption, but Business Intelligence tools still use their own higher level languages based upon a multidimensional paradigm. Composable calculations are what is missing from SQL, and we propose a new kind of column, called a measure, that attaches a calculation to a table. Like regular tables, tables with measures are composable and closed when used in queries.
SQL-with-measures has the power, conciseness and reusability of multidimensional languages but retains SQL semantics. Measure invocations can be expanded in place to simple, clear SQL.
To define the evaluation semantics for measures, we introduce context-sensitive expressions (a way to evaluate multidimensional expressions that is consistent with existing SQL semantics), a concept called evaluation context, and several operations for setting and modifying the evaluation context.
