Virtualization allows for more efficient use of server resources by running multiple virtual machines on a single physical server. This is done through the use of a hypervisor which creates isolated virtual machines, each with their own operating system and applications. Networking in virtualized environments is enabled through software-defined networking which decouples the network control and forwarding functions from the underlying hardware, allowing for centralized programmatic control of network resources. Neutron is OpenStack's networking component that provides software-defined networking capabilities like network provisioning and virtual port management.

Architecting a private cloud to meet the use cases of its users can be a daunting task. How do you determine which of the many L2/L3 Neutron plugins and drivers to implement? Does network performance outweigh reliability? Are overlay networks just as performant as VLAN networks? The answers to these questions will drive the appropriate technology choice.
In this presentation, we will look at many of the common drivers built around the ML2 framework, including LinuxBridge, OVS, OVS+DPDK, SR-IOV, and more, and will provide performance data to help drive decisions around selecting a technology that's right for the situation. We will discuss our experience with some of these technologies, and the pros and cons of one technology over another in a production environment.

CERN is the home of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), a 27km circular proton accelerator generating tens of petabytes of new data every year. Data is stored and processed using a large amount of resources totaling over 250.000 cores and 1000s of storage servers, managed by OpenStack.
Networking is a critical part of our infrastructure and arguably the hardest to evolve. Given the size of CERN’s infrastructure, its flat network is partitioned in segments each representing a separate broadcast domain and potentially offering different levels of service. This fragmentation improves scalability and reduces the impact of misbehaving systems in the datacentre to individual segments. On the other hand, having multiple broadcast domains means features like floating and virtual IPs are much harder to offer.
We will tell the story of OpenStack Networking at CERN. First integration with Nova Network, the migration to Neutron and how we're adding SDN in our infrastructure.

Midokura OpenStack Day Korea Talk: MidoNet Open Source Network Virtualization...Dan Mihai Dumitriu
OpenStack deployments for public or private clouds require overlay networking. Due to the scale and rate of change of virtual resources, it isn't practical to rely on traditional network constructs and isolation mechanims. Today's deployments require performance, resilience, and high availability to be considered truly production-ready. In this session, we deep dive into the MidoNet architecture, and process of sending a data packet across an OpenStack environment through a network overlay. A distributed architecture implements logical constructs that are used to build networks without a single point of failure, all while adding network functionality in a highly-scalable manner. Network functions are applied in a single virtual hop. By applying network services right at the ingress host, the network is free from unnecessary clogging and bottlenecks by avoiding additional hops. Packets reach their destination more efficiently with the single virtual hop. After this session, the audience will understand how distributed architectures allow efficient networking with routing decisions and network services applied at the edge. Also, the audience will understand how it is easier to scale clouds when the network intelligence is distributed.
A brief introduction to the world of Software Defined Networking.
It is a very revolutionary technology which can entirely change the face of network management, if implemented in a network.

Secure Multi Tenant Cloud with OpenContrailPriti Desai
Building a secure multi-tenant cloud necessitates proper tenant isolation and access control. Key network and security functions must scale independently based on the dynamic resource requirements across each tenant. Additionally, On-demand and self-service provisioning are required for achieving operational efficiencies. Robust, dynamic and elastic software abstractions are imperative to support applications built to run such complex environments.
This slide deck covers:
• Architectural design choices
• Implementation blueprints
• Operational best practices

Providing Globus Services to Users of JASMIN for Environmental Data AnalysisGlobus
JASMIN is the UK’s high-performance data analysis platform for environmental science, operated by STFC on behalf of the UK Natural Environment Research Council (NERC). In addition to its role in hosting the CEDA Archive (NERC’s long-term repository for climate, atmospheric science & Earth observation data in the UK), JASMIN provides a collaborative platform to a community of around 2,000 scientists in the UK and beyond, providing nearly 400 environmental science projects with working space, compute resources and tools to facilitate their work. High-performance data transfer into and out of JASMIN has always been a key feature, with many scientists bringing model outputs from supercomputers elsewhere in the UK, to analyse against observational or other model data in the CEDA Archive. A growing number of JASMIN users are now realising the benefits of using the Globus service to provide reliable and efficient data movement and other tasks in this and other contexts. Further use cases involve long-distance (intercontinental) transfers to and from JASMIN, and collecting results from a mobile atmospheric radar system, pushing data to JASMIN via a lightweight Globus deployment. We provide details of how Globus fits into our current infrastructure, our experience of the recent migration to GCSv5.4, and of our interest in developing use of the wider ecosystem of Globus services for the benefit of our user community.
Listen to the keynote address and hear about the latest developments from Rachana Ananthakrishnan and Ian Foster who review the updates to the Globus Platform and Service, and the relevance of Globus to the scientific community as an automation platform to accelerate scientific discovery.

First Steps with Globus Compute Multi-User EndpointsGlobus
In this presentation we will share our experiences around getting started with the Globus Compute multi-user endpoint. Working with the Pharmacology group at the University of Auckland, we have previously written an application using Globus Compute that can offload computationally expensive steps in the researcher's workflows, which they wish to manage from their familiar Windows environments, onto the NeSI (New Zealand eScience Infrastructure) cluster. Some of the challenges we have encountered were that each researcher had to set up and manage their own single-user globus compute endpoint and that the workloads had varying resource requirements (CPUs, memory and wall time) between different runs. We hope that the multi-user endpoint will help to address these challenges and share an update on our progress here.

3. A server is a collection of hardware
resources that are accessed by an OS
through specialized drivers.
These resources can be:
● CPU processor
● RAM (or memory)
● Storage
● Network Interface Card (NIC)
4. In a virtualized server:
● there is an added layer
called the Hypervisor.
● there are multiple isolated
VMs running its own
operating system and
applications.
5. ● Underutilization, inefficient usage of servers.
● Server Proliferation.
● Wastage of space, power, high costs of cooling the environment incurred by
the data centers.
6. ● Availability
● Virtualization results in a much better disaster recovery capability.
● Fault tolerance
● Ease in Migration
● Flexibility
● Huge decrease in the time it takes to provision new applications.
● Promote standardization.
7. ● Virtualization is a methodology of dividing the resources of a computer into
multiple execution environments.
● Virtualization decouples the application and operating system from the server
hardware.
8.
9.
10. ● Application based addressing is based on where that physical server is
located.
● The MAC address is associated with the physical server.
11.
12.
13. ● Create logical, virtual networks that are decoupled from the underlying
network hardware.
● Ensure the network can better integrate with and support increasingly virtual
environments.
● Creates a logical software-based view of the networking resources (switches,
routers, etc.)
18. 1. Create a network.
2. Create a subnet and associate it with the network.
3. Boot the virtual machine instance and specify the network.
4. Nova interfaces with Neutron to create a port on the network.
5. Neutron assigns a MAC address and IP address to the newly created port
using attributes defined by the subnet.
6. Nova starts the instance.
7. The instance sends a DHCP request during boot, at which point, the DHCP
server responds with the IP address corresponding to the MAC address of the
instance.
19. The main components are:
● Neutron Server
● Plugins
● Plugin Agents
● Message Queue
● Database
● DHCP Agent
● L3 Agent
29. . . . the Switch/Router has to figure out what to do with the packet.
Switches and Routers have two logical planes of functions:
● Control Plane / Forwarding Plane: the logic that determines how traffic is
handled.
● Data Plane: the actual moving of packets from one network interface to
another.
30. ● In case of network changes, each device needs to be configured individually.
● Different vendors have different control plane logic.
31. ● Decouple the control plane (software) from the data plane (hardware).
● Provide centralized control and enjoy the benefits of a programmable
network.
