Observability Concepts EVERY Developer Should Know -- DeveloperWeek Europe.pdfPaige Cruz
Monitoring and observability aren’t traditionally found in software curriculums and many of us cobble this knowledge together from whatever vendor or ecosystem we were first introduced to and whatever is a part of your current company’s observability stack.
While the dev and ops silo continues to crumble….many organizations still relegate monitoring & observability as the purview of ops, infra and SRE teams. This is a mistake - achieving a highly observable system requires collaboration up and down the stack.
I, a former op, would like to extend an invitation to all application developers to join the observability party will share these foundational concepts to build on:

Effective Application Security in Software Delivery lifecycle using Deployment Firewall and DBOM
The modern software delivery process (or the CI/CD process) includes many tools, distributed teams, open-source code, and cloud platforms. Constant focus on speed to release software to market, along with the traditional slow and manual security checks has caused gaps in continuous security as an important piece in the software supply chain. Today organizations feel more susceptible to external and internal cyber threats due to the vast attack surface in their applications supply chain and the lack of end-to-end governance and risk management.
The software team must secure its software delivery process to avoid vulnerability and security breaches. This needs to be achieved with existing tool chains and without extensive rework of the delivery processes. This talk will present strategies and techniques for providing visibility into the true risk of the existing vulnerabilities, preventing the introduction of security issues in the software, resolving vulnerabilities in production environments quickly, and capturing the deployment bill of materials (DBOM).

Climate Impact of Software Testing at Nordic Testing DaysKari Kakkonen
My slides at Nordic Testing Days 6.6.2024
Climate impact / sustainability of software testing discussed on the talk. ICT and testing must carry their part of global responsibility to help with the climat warming. We can minimize the carbon footprint but we can also have a carbon handprint, a positive impact on the climate. Quality characteristics can be added with sustainability, and then measured continuously. Test environments can be used less, and in smaller scale and on demand. Test techniques can be used in optimizing or minimizing number of tests. Test automation can be used to speed up testing.

Editor's Notes
The Nexus of Forces is a critical turning point for many industries, including financial services, manufacturing and retail, as well as for the public sector. Enterprises in many industries face tremendous external and internal pressure to transform. Source: Gartner February 2014
Core Transactional Systems have for years lain, by design, protected, secure, and largely inaccessible at the heart of every organization. Now they need to communicate with other systems, organizations and customers often via the intranet, internet, VPNs and a myriad of web technologies, while maintaining corporate security and data integrity.
Core transaction systems however face a set of challenges:
Erosion of inside knowledge of the organisation about their intricacies
Lack/ Inappropriate/ dated documentation
Shrinkage of qualified, often expensive resources to maintain/ access
Complexity built in through earlier technologies and the passing of time!
High risk of failure/ penetration/ human error
o Companies want to deploy Cloud/Mobile applications and to see results quickly.
o Various lines of business are now driving these requirements and have very little time in which to deploy new applications
o 99% of these need to integrate with something
o They need results in hours or days, not weeks or months.
o These are very rarely deployed once and left
o They are generally agile with a new release every week
o The requirements are actually defined ‘as they go’ by the market so being agile with integration requirements is key.
§ The traditional integration paradigm and tools do not deal with this approach well. Generally requirements must be defined and agreed a long time up front. I think this needs to be a key part of our thinking here….we are complimentary not conflicting with existing stacks.
The Nexus of Forces drives and enables crucial industry transformation. The rate of that transformation and the effect of the nexus on business processes vary from industry to industry; organizations are just discovering its current and potential impact on the bottom line. Source: Gartner February 2014
Adaptive integration
o Feels it’s good technology and ‘looks nice’.
o It specifically captures the adaptive integration requirement
Ostia are not afraid of the core systems – years of legacy experience; the competition are – lack of knowledge and experience
5 year old kids can exchange data without any training or special tools.
Access to structured data is complex and seemingly difficult.
We have applied the lessons learned through the social media for accessing structured data.
The SOA Gateway implementation consists of two parts as follows:
The SOA Gateway Server which sits on the legacy platform and is used to get information about IT Assets to expose and to handle requests to access those assets.
The SOA Gateway Control Centre which runs in Eclipse. This collects information form the SOA Gateway server or from other sources to enable the simple creation of services within the SOA Gateway on the platform of choice.
Once a service is created in the SOA Gateway server, it can be used from any client on any of the traditional client platforms without any SOA Gateway software being installed on those client systems.
Unique ‘Discover’ process
Technology agnostic – single solution and unconstrained application
Point & click, no coding – quick and easy to install, configure and use – results within hours
Standards based – secure, performant and scalable
Direct ‘live’ access – one version of the truth
Generic (apply to all solutions):
· Platform, database and language agnostic
· Secure access through firewalls to data / logic sources
· OLTP levels of service / fully scalable
· Configuration only / code-free
· Server only install – no installation necessary on the client platform
· Live access
· Lifecycle governance of services
· Time and cost effective
Intelligent Virtual Services (IVS)
· Ability to test full business processes rather than just individual services – generation of synthetic request/response pairs to support test negative and boundary test cases
· Dynamic Service Masking masks data ‘in-flight’ ensuring compliance and full consistency by using obfuscated production data
· Framework facilitates very heavy load testing
· Virtualization of high cost mainframe systems on low cost hardware for test purposes
· Virtualization of locally unavailable services thus facilitating comprehensive offshore testing of newly developed applications.
· Virtualization of high cost external services that are paid for on a usage basis
Intelligent Discovery and Dependency Mapping (IDM)
· Rapid acquisition of data for KT purposes
· Automated process once configured which can be rerun on a regular basis to pick up changes
Intelligent Code-free Integration (ICI) – includes Cloud support
· Expose Cloud services with configuration not coding
