- 2. Dada began in Zurich, Switzerland in 1916, spreading to Berlin shortly thereafter. The absurdity of Dada activities created a mirror of the absurdity in the world around them. Dada was anti-aesthetic, anti-rational and anti-idealistic. Surrealist works were bound up with the psychoanalytical theories of Sigmund Freud relating to the irrational and instinctual drives of the unconscious.

He is known best as the founder of Surrealism. 19 February 1896 – 28 September 1966 Breton was a major member of the Dada group and the founder of Surrealism. He was dedicated to avant-garde art-making and was known for his ability to unite disparate artists through printed matter and curatorial pursuits. Breton drafted the Surrealist Manifesto in 1924, deeply affecting the methodology and origins of Abstract Expressionism. His aim was to gather all the information possible related to forms that might express the unconscious activity of the mind.
