This document provides guidance for a level two painting course and discusses three subject matter themes: still life, local environment, and people. For each theme, it gives examples from traditional art practices and contemporary artists. Students will choose one theme to focus on and select matching artist models and pictorial concerns. Examples of traditional still life and landscapes depict themes like the passage of time and beauty of nature. Contemporary examples shown include the work of artists Wayne Thiebaud, Jim Dine, Richard Diebenkorn, and Adam Mehretu.

2. Still life A still life is a work of art depicting mostly inanimate subject matter, typically commonplace objects which may be either natural (food, flowers, plants, rocks, or shells) or man-made (drinking glasses, books, vases, jewelry, coins, pipes, and so on).

3. Still life traditional These images were painted a long time ago. The themes explored include the passing of time and how all things are impermanent.
