Hadoop World 2011: Hadoop and Netezza Deployment Models and Case Study - Kris...Cloudera, Inc.
Â
Hadoop is rapidly emerging as a viable platform for big data analytics. Thanks to early adoption by organizations like Yahoo and Facebook, and an active open source community, we have seen significant innovation around this platform. With support of relational constructs and a SQL-like query interface, many experts believe that Hadoop will subsume some of the data warehousing tasks at some point in the future. Even though Hadoop and parallel databases have some architectural similarities, they are designed to solve different problems. In this session, you will get introduced to Hadoop architecture, its salient differences from Netezza and typical use cases. You will learn about common co-existence deployment models that have been put into practice by Netezza's customers who have leveraged benefits from both these technologies. You will also understand Netezza's current support for Hadoop and future strategy. If you have currently deployed Hadoop within your organization or in early stages of learning and evaluating Hadoop, you will benefit from attending this session. It will give you an opportunity to interact with practitioners and industry experts who have successfully deployed Hadoop and Netezza within their organizationsÂ

HBaseCon 2015: Taming GC Pauses for Large Java Heap in HBaseHBaseCon
Â
In this presentation, we will introduce Hotspot's Garbage First collector (G1GC) as the most suitable collector for latency-sensitive applications running with large memory environments. We will first discuss G1GC internal operations and tuning opportunities, and also cover tuning flags that set desired GC pause targets, change adaptive GC thresholds, and adjust GC activities at runtime. We will provide several HBase case studies using Java heaps as large as 100GB that show how to best tune applications to remove unpredicted, protracted GC pauses.

June 3, 2024 Anti-Semitism Letter Sent to MIT President Kornbluth and MIT Cor...Levi Shapiro
Â
Letter from the Congress of the United States regarding Anti-Semitism sent June 3rd to MIT President Sally Kornbluth, MIT Corp Chair, Mark Gorenberg
Dear Dr. Kornbluth and Mr. Gorenberg,
The US House of Representatives is deeply concerned by ongoing and pervasive acts of antisemitic
harassment and intimidation at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Failing to act decisively to ensure a safe learning environment for all students would be a grave dereliction of your responsibilities as President of MIT and Chair of the MIT Corporation.
This Congress will not stand idly by and allow an environment hostile to Jewish students to persist. The House believes that your institution is in violation of Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, and the inability or
unwillingness to rectify this violation through action requires accountability.
Postsecondary education is a unique opportunity for students to learn and have their ideas and beliefs challenged. However, universities receiving hundreds of millions of federal funds annually have denied
students that opportunity and have been hijacked to become venues for the promotion of terrorism, antisemitic harassment and intimidation, unlawful encampments, and in some cases, assaults and riots.
The House of Representatives will not countenance the use of federal funds to indoctrinate students into hateful, antisemitic, anti-American supporters of terrorism. Investigations into campus antisemitism by the Committee on Education and the Workforce and the Committee on Ways and Means have been expanded into a Congress-wide probe across all relevant jurisdictions to address this national crisis. The undersigned Committees will conduct oversight into the use of federal funds at MIT and its learning environment under authorities granted to each Committee.
⢠The Committee on Education and the Workforce has been investigating your institution since December 7, 2023. The Committee has broad jurisdiction over postsecondary education, including its compliance with Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, campus safety concerns over disruptions to the learning environment, and the awarding of federal student aid under the Higher Education Act.
⢠The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is investigating the sources of funding and other support flowing to groups espousing pro-Hamas propaganda and engaged in antisemitic harassment and intimidation of students. The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is the principal oversight committee of the US House of Representatives and has broad authority to investigate âany matterâ at âany timeâ under House Rule X.
⢠The Committee on Ways and Means has been investigating several universities since November 15, 2023, when the Committee held a hearing entitled From Ivory Towers to Dark Corners: Investigating the Nexus Between Antisemitism, Tax-Exempt Universities, and Terror Financing. The Committee followed the hearing with letters to those institutions on January 10, 202

2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin
Â
http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024
Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasnât one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.
Operation âBlue Starâ is the only event in the history of Independent India where the state went into war with its own people. Even after about 40 years it is not clear if it was culmination of states anger over people of the region, a political game of power or start of dictatorial chapter in the democratic setup.
The people of Punjab felt alienated from main stream due to denial of their just demands during a long democratic struggle since independence. As it happen all over the word, it led to militant struggle with great loss of lives of military, police and civilian personnel. Killing of Indira Gandhi and massacre of innocent Sikhs in Delhi and other India cities was also associated with this movement.

A Strategic Approach: GenAI in EducationPeter Windle
Â
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.

1. Interview at the City Council (with 2 young persons, a young man (Michele) and a
young woman ⌠for names ask Garelli), on 31st of March, at 15.00 (with the
collaboration of Ferrati Maria Chiara and Roberta Di Pietro)
TRANSCRIPT
Questions
1. MARIA CHIARA: Where do the migrants you normally file come from?
2. ROBERTA: Which documents do they have to own? If they donât have any, which ones do
they need?
3. MARIA CHIARA: Why do they leave their country?
4. ROBERTA: Do they arrive in Pescara to settle here or just as a step towards a longer
journey? Which expectations do migrants have?
5. MARIA CHIARA: What kind of procedures do you have to follow when they arrive?
6. ROBERTA: What are interesting aspects when dealing with migrants?
1. MARIA CHIARA: Where do the migrants you normally file come from?
- Michele (M2U005899): Most of the immigrants come from Africa, particularly
Nigeria and Senegal. Another important flow comes from Eastern Europe,
especially Ukraine, Bulgaria, Poland and Romania too. Asians are also another
important wave, in fact we have e lot of guys coming from China, Bangladesh,
Pakistan, Philippines too). Another significant migrant flow come from both South
and Central America, especially Brazil and Colombia (?)
2. ROBERTA: Which documents do they have to own? If they donât have any, which ones do
they need?
- the girl (M2U00589): Immigrants really need to produce a lot of documents which depend
on their home country, and I have to say that there is a big difference between people who live
in Europe and people who donât. In the first case the situation is easier, of course! Because
sometimes just an ID-Card or a passport is required, because in Europe we are lucky, weâve
got the freedom to move and to sail across an European country. Otherwise the situation is
more difficult and they have to produce a lot of documents. First of all an entry visa, which is
a special permission, in order for the immigrants to enter the country, and this is the first step
for the whole process, and the entry visa is related to other papers, such as Declaration of
Hospitality, certificate of suitable housing, health insurance and others...and certificate of
suitable housing and declaration of hospitality are released by our office. So people come in
our office and ask for these papers.
2. 3. MARIA CHIARA: Why do they leave their country?
- Michele (M2U00590, da 10ââ al 22ââ, SOLO LA PRIMA PARTE)
Well, obviously most of them escape from their own country for an important reason,
THE WAR. People from Nigeria, for example, escape from their country because they
live in zones of war totally unsafe, or still object of discriminations or persecutions for
ethnic or religious reasons.
- Michele: (M2U00592, seconda parte)
In Italy, all immigrants who come from zone of war are entitled to apply for
international protection. An international protection seeker is a person who has
applied for international protection and is awaiting the decision of recognition of
refugee status or another form of protection. Then there is an other important group,
who come, for example, from Eastern Europe, that come in Italy, but just to improve
their way of life. Especially Ukranians and Bulgarians, Romanians come to Italy, in this
case to Pescara, looking for a job, for example, Philippines too. Maybe the Asians, are
the only ones who seem to migrate to Pescara, to Italy, just for commercial reasons.
4. ROBERTA: Do they arrive in Pescara to settle here or just as a step towards a longer
journey and Which expectations do migrants have?
- The girl (M2U00592, da 1,00ââ a 2,01ââ ): Ok, Most of people who come in our
office, really want to stay here in order to work, study or start a family, with the
hope of a better future, of course. They really love Italy and they think itâs the best
place to live and to stay, and we know it because we talk with them and they trust
us. They tell me about their expectations of life here, in Italy ... and so this is so
important for us ... And they ask for documents in order to stay here, so we know it.
Of course, I met people who were just passing through Italy to reach other
countries, such as Germany or France, or because they think they are better places
to live and stay or because their families already live in that country.
5. MARIA CHIARA: What kind of procedures do you have to follow when they arrive?
- Michele(M2UU00594) a parte la risata finale si può prendere tranquillamente!
It is possible to require in this office another important document, called certificate of
suitable housing. Itâs one of the most important and it is necessary to obtain the residence
permit. I must say that we are here also to help the immigrants, resolving any kind of
problems (for example helping them to fill out other forms or explaining how they can get
the residence).
6. What are interesting aspects when dealing with migrants?
The GIRL (M2U00597)- What can I say is that even if we speak 3 foreign languages, such as
English, Spanish or French we have a lot of communication problems because it is so difficult
to understand others and to be understood by others, of course! For example with Chinese
people we have got a lot of problems, because they canât speak English, or Italian, or other
languages, just Chinese⌠so, itâs very difficult! In this case, after several attempts by me,
Michele and others, we ask for someone who speaks Italian and Chinese too, in order to
translate and trying to solve the problem, and communication problems are really important
3. in our office. BUT, what can I say is that I really love my job, itâs beautiful have the chance to
know other cultures, new people and itâs also a way to know people and make friends. There
are some people who came back in our office just to say hello, and itâs so beautiful have people
in Italy ⌠itâs great!
