Introduction to the No Child Left Behind Policy
This is presentation serves as an introduction to the No Child Left Behind policy. It was created for my Honors Public Policy class at the State University of New York at Albany.

Substance Abuse Genesee, Michigan
The document outlines a community plan developed between 2004-2005 to address child abuse and neglect in Genesee County, Michigan. Over 60 professionals participated in a planning process that resulted in a vision for 2015 with reduced abuse reports and substantiations through increased community support services for families. Goals were identified and prioritized, with suggested activities and lead agencies, to implement education campaigns, risk assessment programs, family support services, and improved coordination of services and funding to achieve the vision.
Improving Data, Improving Outcomes

Early Childhood Sound Basic Education for All - An Action Plan for North Car...
1) A 2004 court case in North Carolina found that the state must address the needs of at-risk children and ensure access to early childhood education as part of providing a sound basic education for all.
2) This study examined access to high-quality early childhood programs for low-income students in North Carolina. It found that while programs like Smart Start and NC Pre-K have benefits, funding has declined significantly in recent years limiting access.
3) Research shows that high-quality early childhood education can improve child health and development, lead to higher graduation rates, and provide long-term financial benefits and cost savings far outweighing the costs of the programs.

Early childhood education is one of the specialization areas that had its issues presented in Mayo Keller’s taskforce. As a member of the taskforce specializing in early childhood education, I will present to the taskforce programs that need improvement for the ultimate goal of advancing the sector. One program that need to be evaluated and improved for change is the enrollment program into early childhood education. The goal of the program is to increase enrollment and improve participation of young learners in early childhood education. The enrollment of children aged 3 to 5 years into early childhood education has significantly been declining in the Grand City area. The situation therefore calls for the stakeholders to look into the causes and solutions (Walden University, 2016). Parents, district education officers, mayor’s office, and early childhood educators are some of the stakeholders concerned with the program.

The Opioid Epidemic: Preventing a Fatal Opioid Overdose
Narcan, also known as Naloxone, is a prescription medication that can reverse an opioid overdose by blocking opioids in the brain for 30-90 minutes. There are two forms of Narcan, a nasal spray and injectable. Non-medical individuals can effectively administer Narcan to someone experiencing an overdose. If administered to someone who is not overdosing, Narcan has no effect. At over 2,000 pharmacies in New York, a person does not need a prescription to obtain Narcan.

The Opioid Epidemic: An Overview
The opioid epidemic has become a public health crisis in recent years. Factors that increase the risk of opioid misuse include experiencing physical or social hardships, mental health issues, substance use, and criminal activity. Opioids are both legal and illegal drugs, including prescription medications like oxycodone and hydrocodone as well as heroin. Addiction is driven by biological changes in the body and brain that occur quickly after regular opioid use. Prevention through education is key to addressing this epidemic and reducing stigma around addiction.

This research brief examines trends in opioid misuse and child welfare outcomes in New York State between 2006 and 2016. It finds that increases in opioid misuse and rates of child maltreatment were geographically concentrated, with many counties in Central NY and the Southern Tier experiencing high increases in both measures. Specifically, 17 counties saw above-median increases in both opioid emergency department admissions and reported child maltreatment rates, indicating particular vulnerability in these regions. In contrast, most counties downstate like in the Hudson Valley saw below-median increases in both measures.Parenting Experiences and Parenting Education in Family Treatment Court

McCabe, John W. Sipple and Hope G. Casto, Cornell University and Skidmore College Background 1. Childcare policy is premised on the twin goals of child development and work force entry. 2. Sixty one percent of children under the age of five are in regular childcare arrangement of some kind. 3. Recent research has drawn attention to the presence of “childcare deserts” where parents have few or no options for childcare. New York State Policy New York State’s universal pre-k (UPK) policy provides access to early childhood education to four-year-olds across the state. The policy also allows school districts to partner with community-based organizations to provide UPK programming to the children in the community. New York State has childcare deserts across the state (light green districts are childcare deserts) 2. Over time, there is an unintended consequence of UPK – communities experience reduced capacity to care for infants and toddlers in rural communities Universal Pre-K Child care Head Start/ Early Head Start Child Care Over time, there is a reduced capacity to care for infants and toddlers in rural communities with UPK.
