What is PE? Knowledge, skills and confidence that students need to maintain meaningful PA throughout their lifetime A segue to physical activity as adults There is no one forcing them to be active as adults, which is why Physical edu is important at a young age
Goes farther than games and sports PE also includes awareness (like ways to be active outside of school) Sportsmanship  Exercise plans Social interaction Self responsibility Group dynamics Health Sexual Education Basic nutrition facts Fitness plans People skills Health risks (smoking, alcohol/drug abuse, STD’s…)
-The No Child Left Behind Act (NCLB) was signed into law on January 8, 2002 by George W. Bush. At the time, it had  Many supporters from Congress. Ted Kennedy was one of the bill’s co-authors and sponsors.  -NCLB is federal legislation that enacts the theories of  standards-based education reform. It is based on the belief  that setting high standards and establishing measurable goals can improve individual outcomes in education. This  Act requires states to develop standardized tests (ex. EOG’s) for core subjects. It is given to all students, if those  states are to receive federal funding for schools. There is no national achievement standard. The standards are set  by each state. -Districts that performed poorly received a $13.5 billion increase for funding in 2004 to improve teaching and start new academic programs. Supporters of the NCLB Act claim that it is working to close the achievement gap. Basically, NCLB uses standardized test scores to fund public schools.
NCLB’s Impact on PE Emphasis on test scores is bad news for PE NCLB has led to: Reduction in instructional time Budget cuts for PE departments Elimination of jobs
