What's this
Internet ofThings
Intelligent interactivity between
human and things to exchange
information & knowledge for new
value creation.
INTERNET OF PEOPLE
THINGS

Senses &
Communicates
Associated sensors
Example: Helius is the name of a new smart pill created by Proteus, a firm
based in Switzerland. Also provide important information on heart rate,
temperature, glucose level and respiratory rate of the person.
Example: J.A.R.V.I.S from the movie Iron Man
The term "Internet ofThings" can be defined as the
platform that enable the Internet to reach out into the real
world of physical objects. ------IoT 2008
“Things having its own identities and virtual personalities
having a smart & intelligent interface to connect and
communicate within social Environment” .
-----Iot 2020
Definition of IOT with Time
History
• The term Internet of Things is 16 years old.
• Back then, the idea was often called
“embedded internet”.
• Term “Internet of Things” was coined by Kevin
Ashton in 1999 during his work.
• Ashton who was working in supply chain
optimization, wanted to attract senior
management’s attention to a new exciting
technology called RFID.
• Because the internet was the hottest new trend,
hence it is named as “Internet of Things”.

EnablingTechnologies
• RFID
• WiFi IEEE 802.11
• ZigBee IEEE 802.15.4
• Barcode and QR Code
• Sensors and smartphones
1.wireless use of electromagnetic fields to
transfer data
2.Automatically identifies and tracking tags
attached to objects.
3.The tags contain electronically stored
information.
RFID: Radio-frequency
identification
RFID
RFID cont.
• Widely used in Transport and Logistics
• Easy to deploy: RFID tags and RFID
readers
• The communication range and the
frequency depends on the type of
technology
ZigBee
Zigbee
• ZigBee is an IEEE 802.15.4-
based specification for a suite of high-level
communication protocols used to create personal
area networks with small, low-power digital
radios.
ZigBee Cont.
• Low cost
• Very long battery life
• Easy to deploy
• Large number of nodes (up to 64770)
• Can be used globally
• Secure
• Ideal forWPAN
WiFi
WiFi
• Very common
• Widely used both in indoor and outdoor environments
• General purpose
• Low cost
• Maybe not a good solution in some special conditions
Barcode e QR Code
Barcode and QR Code
• Low cost
• No technological difficulties
• Several devices can read a barcode
• Starting point for more complex systems
• Example: price comparison
Sensors and smartphones
Sensors and smartphones
 In the near future almost everybody will probably have a
smartphone
 A smartphone isn't just a mobile phone that has access to
the Internet
 The iPhone has a lot of different types of sensors

The future of IoT
• In 2017, Iot market will surpass the pc, tablets and phone
market
• Approx. 82% of the companies will implement into their
business.
• In 2014, $79.4 billion in revenue, $59.2 billion in smart cities
and $29 billion in building/infrastructure.
• 50-200 billion devices will be connected to internet.
• 5G will power the future internet of things.
• Future in India:
• Planning smart cities.
• A&T global partnership with WIPRO for M2M rollout across
various sector.
• India will account for $10-12 billion of the total revenue

Internet of Things: Its Applications Future and Problems

Editor's Notes

  • #10 Helius is the name of a new smart pill created by Proteus Medical and Novartis, a firm based in Switzerland. The invention features an a biodegradable chip and medication and it is able to track a patient's health signs and send the collected data to a smartphone. It is worth mentioning that the pill will provide important information on heart rate, temperature, glucose level and respiratory rate of the person who administers it
  • #13 The term Internet of Things is 16 years old. But the actual idea of connected devices had been around longer, at least since the 70s. Back then, the idea was often called “embedded internet” or “pervasive computing”. But the actual term “Internet of Things” was coined by Kevin Ashton in 1999 during his work at Procter&Gamble. Ashton who was working in supply chain optimization, wanted to attract senior management’s attention to a new exciting technology called RFID. Because the internet was the hottest new trend in 1999 and because it somehow made sense, he called his presentation “Internet of Things”.
