Internet
Internet is a global computer network
providing a variety of information and
communication facilities, consisting of
interconnected networks using
standardized communication protocols.
Domain name and IP address
 A domain name is the address people type in
to the internet. E.g. www.google.com
 The IP address is the address the computer
uses to direct to the page. This consists of
number. E.g. 123.23.234.45
 The reason for domain names is because it is
easier for people to remember letters and
words rather than numbers
 These are the almost the same because they
both lead to one website
Data packets and packet
switching
 A packet is a basic unit of
communication over a digital network
 Packet Switching is a mode of data
transmission in which a message is
broken into a number of parts which are
sent independently
Function of Routers
 Routers communicate with each other to
share information about available paths and
directly connected routes
 There are 2 types of routers: Static and
Dynamic
 Static routers require administrators to set
them up manually
 Dynamic routers are designed to discover
routes automatically making them require a
minimal amount of setting up
