2. INTERNET “The Internet is a global system of interconnected computer networks that use the standardized Internet Protocol Suite (TCP/IP). It is a network of networks that consists of millions of private and public, academic, business, and government networks of local to global scope that are linked by copper wires, fiber-optic cables, wireless connections, and other technologies.”

3. HISTORY OF THE INTERNET “Before the widespread internetworking that led to the Internet, most communication networks were limited by their nature to only allow communications between the stations on the local network and the prevalent computer networking method was based on the central mainframe computer model. Several research programs began to explore and articulate principles of networking between physically separate networks, leading to the development of the packet switching model of digital networking.”

4. ADVANTAGES OF INTERNETEmail: Email is now an essential communication tools in business. It is also excellent for keeping in touch with family and friends. Information: There is a huge amount of information available on the internet for just about every subject known to man, ranging from government law and services, trade fairs and conferences, market information, new ideas and technical support. Services: Many services are now provided on the internet such as online banking, job seeking and applications, and hotel reservations. Buy or sell products: The internet is a very effective way to buy and sell products all over the world. Communities: Communities of all types have sprung up on the internet. Its a great way to meet up with people of similar interest and discuss common issues.

DISADVANTAGES OF INTERNETTheft of Personal information : If you use the Internet, you may be facing grave danger as your personal information such as name, address, credit card number etc. can be accessed by other culprits to make your problems worse.Spamming: Spamming refers to sending unwanted e-mails in bulk, which provide no purpose and needlessly obstruct the entire system. Virus threat : Virus is nothing but a program which disrupts the normal functioning of your computer systems. Pornography: This is perhaps the biggest threat related to your children’s healthy mental life. A very serious issue concerning the Internet.

6. INTERNET SERVICE PROVIDER “An Internet service provider (ISP, also called Internet access provider, or IAP) is a company that offers its customers access to the Internet. The ISP connects to its customers using a data transmission technology appropriate for delivering Internet Protocol datagrams, such as dial-up, DSL, cable modem, wireless or dedicated high-speed interconnects.”

7. WIRELESS INTERNET “Wi-Fi is a wireless technology that uses radio frequencies to transfer data. Wireless equipment transmits Internet protocol data to a host computer. Due to Wi-Fi you can connect to the Internet without cables or wires. So, nowadays, this technology is much used in accessing network on mobile phones, computers, laptops and PDAs. Wireless connecting is possible when your network device (personal computer or lap top) is equipped with wireless network interface card. Wireless Internet connection provides connection to e-mail, mobile banking, instant messaging, news, weather, travel information and other services.”

According to Computer Industry Almanac Inc., more than 625 million computers are used worldwide, including some 182 million in the United States.A study done in 2000 by that same company reported that more than 400 million people across the globe use the Internet, up from a mere 3 million in 1994. That number could reach 1 billion by 2005.”
