Antimicrobial and Other Therapeutic Properties of Spices
Spices are natural compounds derived from different parts of a plant which are commonly used as
flavoring, aroma and preservatives. The essential oil content and oleoresins present in the spices
have given them the flavoring and aroma. In addition, the essential oil can also act as a natural
preservative in foods (Ceylan and Fung, 2004). Other than flavoring, aroma and preservatives,
spices have many therapeutic properties such as antimicrobial, antioxidant, chemopreventive and
antifungal. The antimicrobial properties of spices have led to the development of plant origin
antibiotics so as to overcome the antibiotic resistant problems. In addition, the anticancer,

Dietary flavines and flavones exert their effects on signal transduction enzymes such as protein
tyrosine and focal adhesion kinases present on the cell surface, causing them to act as an
effective anticancer agents. Carcinogenesis of various organs can be suppressed by
phytochemicals obtained in spices, for example carotenoids, phenolic compounds and terpenoids
(Kochhar, 2008). 1.3 SPICES AS ANTIOXIDANT AGENTS Endogenous antioxidants present in
spices are known to exert antioxidant properties against oxidative stress. In addition, the presence
of phenolic content such as phenolic acids and flavonoids allow spices to act as natural food
preservatives, preventing the deterioration of food during processing and storage. Studies showed
that phenolics can interact with a wide spectrum of molecular targets central, including mitogen
activated protein kinase (MAPK), protein kinase C (PKC), serine/threonine protein kinase, phase
II antioxidant detoxifying enzymes as well as downregulation of pro inflammatory enzymes
(COX 2 and iNOS) (Soobrattee et al., 2005). 1.4 SPICES WITH THERAPEUTIC PROPERTIES

Loving a Vampire is a Fantasy and a Nightmare in Stephanie...
To be irrevocably in love with a vampire is both a fantasy and a nightmare woven into a reality for
Bella Swan. Pulled in one direction by her passion for Edward Cullen, and in another by her
connection to werewolf Jacob Black, she has endured a tumultuous year of temptation, loss and
strife to reach the ultimate turning point. Her pending choice, to either join the dark but seductive
world of immortals or pursue a fully human life, has become the thread from which the fate of two
completely different tribes hangs. Now that Bella has made her decision, a startling chain of
unprecedented events is about to unfold with potentially devastating and unfathomable
consequences. Breaking Dawnis split into three separate parts. The first part... Show more content

The third section of Breaking Dawn shifts back to Bella s perspective, finding her changed into a
vampire and enjoying her new life and abilities. However, the vampire Irina misidentifies
Renesmee as an immortal child , a child who has been turned into a vampire. Because immortal
children are uncontrollable, the Volturi has outlawed creating them. After Irina presents her
allegation to the Volturi, they plan to destroy Renesmee and the Cullens. In an attempt to survive,
the Cullens gather other vampire clans from different parts of the world. All put forth a special
talent that makes them almost unbeatable. Towards the end they go and meet at the battlefield.
Renesmee then goes and uses her powers of memories or possibilities of the future to the Volturi,
not liking their fate if they continue and fight, the Volturi back out and end things peacefully until
next time. When the Cullen friends leave to return to their covens, Nahuel, the vampire hybrid,
and his companion stay. Nahuel keeps staring at Bella, which makes her, feel uncomfortable.
When she tells Edward, he explains to her that it s because she is alive. When he saw Bella,
Nahuel realized that being half immortal doesn t mean he s inherently evil. Bella s excited to see
Charlie again. She s happy that he found a great match in Sue Clearwater the werewolf s mom

Same Zygotic Twins
1.Twins can occur in two main ways which is why there is two main categories of twins. One type
of twins occurs from one sperm fertilizes one ovum. This fertilized egg begins to duplicate and
divide, however, if the fertilized egg splits apart completely in early development, two separate
organisms start to grow creating monozygotic twins or more commonly called, identical twins.
With monozygotic twins, because they split from the same zygote, they share identical genetics.
However, a more common type of twins is dizygotic twins, which occur twice as often in
monozygotic twins. Sometimes more than one ovum is released in a given month and when this
occurs, two sperm fertilize the two ova, which makes two completely different fertilized eggs.
Since dizygotic twins share the same parents, each has half of their genes in common, like any
other sibling.
2. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
As stated before, identical twins come from the same zygote which causes them to have the same
genotype. Their genotype is what causes their physical appearance, psychological traits, and more
to be the same. However, nurture always affects nature so the phenotype of the identical twins do
not necessarily have the exact same phenotype. Each twin usually develops their own identities and
personalities which also causes there phenotypes to sometimes be different.
3.When studying twins, researchers mainly study identical twins because they strive to see the
influence of nature and nurture on the traits of these identical twins. One way of doing this is by
splitting the twins up at birth. Obviously, the twins are going to share genotypes and so they are
going to has similar influences of nature, but researcher aim to see if interests, habits, and skills are
influenced more by nature or nurture. By splitting the identical twins up, it is easier to see which
trait is influenced by either nature or

The Personality Of Personality Variables
Personality variables have long been hypothesized to be related to expressions of feelings and
behaviors (Eysenck, 1992) and others have shown direct relationships with affect (Costa McCrae,
1984; Diener Emmons, 1984). There have been significant relationships reported especially for the
traits of extraversion and neuroticism. Generally, extraversion is positively correlated with positive
affect and neuroticism is positively correlated with negative affect. Results such as these make
sense in that extraverted individuals tend to enjoy human interaction, and be talkative, assertive,
and gregarious, especially in social situations. Introverts on the other hand, tend to be more
withdrawn, and take more pleasure in solitary activities such as reading and writing. It has been
hypothesized that extroverts experience higher levels of subjective well being, and this may be due
to the fact that they engage in more social interactions providing the opportunity for more life
circumstances, which in turn create the opportunity to experience more positive affectivity (Larsen
Ketelaar, 1991). The personality trait neuroticism is characterized by anxiety, moodiness, fear, and
frustration. Neurotic individuals also tend to respond more negatively to stressors and to report
ordinary situations as threatening and minor frustrations as hopelessly difficult (Ormel, Jeronimus,
Kotov, Riese, Bos, Hankin, 2013). Because of these tendencies, neurotic individuals tend to put

The Movie Nerve
The movie Nerve depicts a game similar to truth or dare, but without the truth. When someone
joins the game, they participate as either a watcher or a player. Watchers pay to gain access to
live broadcasts of players performing dares, and for the ability to suggest dares. Players earn money
for each dare they complete successfully, but can lose it all if they fail to complete a dare. The game
operates on the dark web, shared with others via a special link and emphasizes not disclosing its
operation to law enforcement. Nerve follows the story of high school senior and resident of Staten
Island Vee Delmonico as she transforms from art school applicant to internet superstar in one night
by joining the game and completing dares. She quickly... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Not only does this illustrate how information gleaned from social media influences decisions, but
it eludes to the idea that Nerve has few limits in regard methods for metastasizing its own user base
and retaining existing users. This opens discussion on how social media platforms use advanced
algorithms to show users content that interests them and keep them coming back to the platform,
almost as of addicted. Nerve proves that the influences are strong enough to create a romantic
relationship, or interpreted more symbolically, the power to control major life decisions. Next,
forcing players to compete in the public arena attracts a great deal of attention to the game.
Curiosity causes people to investigate the game: if they join as watchers, they will likely want to
share the game with their friends; joining as players may have the same effect, but could also
create a more ubiquitous, version of the game, causing exponential growth purely through
exposure. Nerve s only purpose is to grow, because more users implies more money. Social media
platforms in general exists to sell advertisements, and advertisers will pay more to reach a larger
audience. By becoming a source of information and entertainment, the platform keeps current users
as recurrent visitors. They access the platform more often, which makes non users curious the

The Attrition Problem in Colleges and Universities
INTRODUCTION Intense competition has made student attrition a concern for colleges and
universities.
Attrition is costly and generates considerable concerns for educational institutions (Tinto, 1993).
This is especially true for small schools that do not have huge endowments, and must depend upon
tuition and fees to support programming. The loss of students has a detrimental impact upon
budgeting as the costs involved in recruiting new students is definitely higher than the cost to retain
existing students (Braunstein, Lesser, Pescatrice, 2006). Small colleges and universities are looking
for ways to differentiate from the competition by offering creative programs that will meet the
needs and wants of students. These schools then ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Further studies suggest that students must take control of the college experience by getting involved
in career planning, joining campus organizations, developing internships, and providing service to
the community (Letcher Neves, 2010). The authors go on to suggest that instructors need to help
students gain self confidence as well as providing a valuable educational experience and a solid
learning environment.
Giese and Cote (2000) have found that there is no single definition of customer satisfaction, and
suggest that satisfaction can be explained best as a response to an evaluation process. The authors
further suggest that problems occur when selecting a definition and comparing results when
operationalizing the definition. Therefore, organizations must use care tailoring the survey
specifically to the type of customer satisfaction questions which can be customized for particular
needs. Other studies suggest there is a relationship between variables relating to the students goal
achievement and social integration into academic life (Wetzel, O Toole, Peterson, 1999). Academic
and social factors appeared to be the most important reason for persisting to graduation. Wetzel et
al., (1999) further found that progress in academic work measured by GPA and hours attempted
and earned guided the attrition/retention decision. Colleges and universities should definitely track

Essay Catoon Violence
Cartoon Violence
In the cartoon, All Dogs Go to Heaven, the main character, a dog, dies. When he arrives in
heaven, he receives a watch that allows him to return to earth. After viewing this scene, Matthew,
a five year old boy, asked his mother when his dog would get her watch. Matthew s dog passed
away over a year ago, but because Matthew, as well as other children, is unable to separate real life
from fiction; he believed that his dog would receive a watch and return to him.
Many types of violence are viewed in cartoons and because they are centered on the interest of
children, children are at great risk of mimicking the actions and attitudes the characters portray. ...

The plot of this cartoon is to stop Scar from taking over the kingdom. Simba returns from running
away after the death of his father, King Mufasa, to learn that his uncle has taken control of the
kingdom. In his effort to take the control back, Scar reveals that he is the one who killed King
Mufasa, not Simba. Outraged in anger Simba puts Scar into exile. However, Scar does not want to
leave, but instead fights Simba for the thrown. It seems this cartoon leads a child to think that if he
/she wants something, then he/she needs to involve fighting and violence. quot; The Lion King

watch this cartoon, they may mimic what they see. Children should learn to be verbal instead of
physical when resolving their problems.

Essay On The Desert Storm
The Desert Storm or as some know, the Persian Gulf War, took place in August of 1990. Saddam
Hussein, the leader of Iraq was the main person involved in the start of the war. The war included
many allied countries, they included a big part of the Middle East, Canada, United States and the
United Kingdom and many more. After lasting 100 hours the war ended on February 28th, 1991
(The Gulf War,1991)
The Desert Storm, which is also known as the Persian Gulf War and known as Operation Desert
Storm, started at the end of the Cold War in 1990. The Desert Storm happened because Saddam
Hussein, who was the leader of Iraq ordered invasion and occupation of the neighboring country
of Kuwait, in August of 1990. Hussein was told by the United Nations Security Council to
withdraw from Kuwait by the middle of January 1991, and Hussein disregarded their demands.
Because he refused to withdraw the Persian Gulf War was triggered (Feinstein, 39). The Iraqi
takeover posed a threat to Saudi Arabia, which was another oil supplying country for the United
States. If Saudi Arabia took over by Hussein than he would have controlled one fifth of the world
s oil supply. The Middle East had their eyes on the White House, waiting for a response from
President George H. W. Bush. When he found out his response was, This will not stand, meaning
that Hussein taking over the Middle East s oil would not be tolerable (Operation Desert Storm).

Management Style
As you may know, different management styles are required in different parts of the world. It is
important to choose the right management style for each situation, which is a key to success for an
organization. All managers use a management process which consists of planning, organizing,
leading and controlling. So they have to perform many roles in an enterprise. What they can do with
various situations will totally depend on their style of management. A management style is an
overall method of leadership used by a manager (Lessem et al, 1999). This essay will first
demonstrate different types of management styles, and then discuss three key factors that can
influence management style, with reference to Japan and America.
Each of the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The Japanese style takes a collective form of responsibility. Those manufactures produce high
product quality at a relatively lower cost (Alston, 1986). The reason is that this sense of collective
responsibility has positively affected the quality standards. Product quality is cooperatively
achieved by workers and managers. Japanese tend to believe the group is more important than the
individual (Alston, 1986). In terms of decision making, they probably attempt to gain consensus
even if it might require more time. As to Americans, who are almost self centered, they apparently
choose to make quick decisions on their own for immediate resolution (Anderson, 2009).
The second factor is staff belonging. The general principle of Japanese management is that
workers form a family (Alston, 1986). As a part of the corporate family , every member not only
pays attention to their own salaries, but also considers the development of the company. Pay is
only one reward. There is also a sense of belongingness and support that employees receive from
their corporations. On the contrary, Americans tend to indicate that there is no need for them to
become familiar with one organization and colleagues before they are off again on their trips
(Wellens, 1980). Perhaps individual freedom is more essential than staff belonging in their mind.
This different attitude leads to diverse management styles. One consequence for Japanese is the
practice of lifetime employment. The

What Are The Causes Of Population Growth And Economic...
1. The North had some farming and was full artisans, where mostly free men lived. With the
Protestant work ethnic encouraged hard work and individual economic enterprise. The English
countries of the North were altered in structure from the individualism supported there. Land in the
South was available for the farms and plantations there, many men in the South would own one
with at least 50 acres. But the demand for land from the growing amount of African slaves coming
to America rose quickly, and the need to expand past the Appalachian Mountians began to look
necessary. There might ve been a lot of land in America, but expansion was always needed for more

In the seventeenth century Europeans accepted the hierarchy in human affairs, poverty, and the
rights of a monarchy. But in the South there wasn t much of a difference in social ranks, so not

the wealthy didn t dominate others in lower classes, a rough economic equality would be
established, and there would be social equality for all. But in reality the idea didn t happen, the
wealth became unevenly distributed and the middle class nearly vanished, leaving the extrememly
rich and the extremely poor. The richer were able to buy more slaves and purchase more land,

Arms And Weapons In Beowulf
Another example of weapons in Beowulf references to arms and armor, very accurate to the
Anglo Saxons traditional shields and weapons. Then Hrothgar s thane leaped onto his horse
and, brandishing a spear, galloped down to the shore; there, he asked at once: Warriors! Who are
you, in your coats of mail, who have steered your tall ship over the sea lanes to these shores? ....
Never have warriors, carrying their shields, come to this country in a more open manner. Nor
were you assured of my leader s approval, my kinsmen s consent. I ve never set eyes on a more
noble man, a warrior in armour, than one among your band; he s no mere retainer, so ennobled
by his weapons. ... The boar crest, brightly gleaming, stood over their helmets: superbly
tempered, plated with glowing gold, it guarded the lives of those grim warriors. ... Their byrnies
were gleaming, the strong links of shining chain mail chinked together. When the sea stained
travelers had reached the hall itself in their fearsome armour, they placed their broad shields
(worked so skillfully) against Heorot s wall. Then they sat on a bench; the brave men s armour
sang. The seafarer s gear stood all together, a grey tipped forest of ash spears; that armed troop
was well equipped with weapons. .... in common we all share sword, helmet, byrnie, the trappings

The Origin Of The Peoples Of Tanzania And Kenya
The Maasai are thought of as the general cattle herders of Africa, are nomadic and pastoralists.
However, due to the increase of the population in the culture, the loss of land has had an effect on
the cattle raising of their lifestyle, shown in a decline over the years (Ndaskoi). Still, Cattle, and
traditional values are held in high regards with the Maasai.
On the western side of the world, many see these people as fierce and elegant. They are tall and
extravagantly dressed, covering themselves in red pigment of which they create themselves. The
Maasai again, are prominently cattle herders, but they do practice agriculture. Growing corn, even
raising bird game, including Ostrich (Spear).

More than twenty variants of Maa exist (Spencer).
Legends in the Maasai culture foretell much about the history of present day Maasai belief
system. The stories told explain the ascent from a massive crater came a prophet magician
known as Laibon. Laibon climbed from this monstrous crater and the cliffs surrounding it.
Stories also describe the death or murder of a giant known as Oltatuani. Many of these stories
share similarities with present day western biblical history. For example in western culture
depictions of man in the bible shows, man was created and there was Adam, and there was Eve.
Similarly, Maasai believe that in the beginning, two tribes existed. One of which was all
females, the other all males. The woman s tribe was known as the Moroyok, as the Maasai
explain it. The Moroyok raised antelope and eland, this is referred to by the Maasai as the first
species of cattle to exist for their culture. In these folktales, women had befriended elephants who
helped them sweep corrals and brought branches for which they used to build homes. Yet, this
story ends with the fall of the women s independence, as the herds of elephants left, and their
livestock vanished from them. This is where the men, and their tribe called the Morwak, became
the fallback sex for the Moroyok. The woman in times of need would live with the Morwak, as
they could not fend for themselves, and since

Humans, Androids, And Humanity By Philip K. Dick
Humans, Androids, and Humanity People have different perspectives on humanity. Some may

humanity is a relative characteristic that is interpreted by the presence or absence of some qualities;
overall, it is one s character that defines one s humanity. Empathy is the ability to understand and

Volatile Aromatic Organic Compounds
1. Introduction The release of volatile aromatic organic compounds into the environment is a
serious problem as they distribute between the different phases in natural systems. Sediments can
be considered as a sink for volatile aromatic organic compounds because of their hydrophobic nature
and the resulting affinity to the sediment s organic matter. Organic matter consists of soft carbon,
where portioning is the main sorption process and hard carbon, where pore filling mechanisms
dominate (Zhao et al., 2002; Chai et al., 2006). Consequently, sorption/desorption processes are the
most important factors that determine the fate of volatile aromatic organic compounds in the
environment. The extensive production and release of aromatic organic compounds has led to a
widespread contamination of soils and sediments with these pollutants throughout the world,
threatening drinking water resources, especially petroleum hydrocarbons as constituents of
gasoline such as Benzene, 1,2 dichlorobenzene, Toluene and m xylene. It was proposed that
sorption of the sorbate molecules may cause deformation of flexible sorbent solids, such as natural
organic matter and organo clays resulting in an entrapment of sorbed molecules during desorption
(Weber et al., 2002; Lu and Pignatello, 2004). Several researchers have tried to associate the
maximum sorption capacities of organic compounds with the sorbed amounts in the slow and very
slow desorbing domains (Van Heuvel et al., 2005; Van Heuvel and

Walter Disney Elias
Walter Disney Elias was born on December 5, 1901 in Chicago, Illinois to Elias Disney (father)
and Flora Call Disney (mother). Walt was named after his dad Elias. Walt was one of 5 kids in
his household: one girl and four boys. Walt lived most of his life in Marceline, Missouri, on a
farm. Walt Disney first discovered his interest in drawing when he was seven years old. Though
he sometimes didn t have paper to draw on, he used napkins or drew on what he could find. Walt
made money when he was only seven by selling small sketches and drawings to his neighbors
and people he knew. One time Walt convinced his sister Ruth to help him paint one of the sides
of their house with tar, only to get in trouble by his mom. As a child Walt had many small jobs to
help him make money; he sold drawings, newspapers, popcorn, and soda to travelers that passed
by the railroads near his house. Education Walt didn t start school till he was seven because his

Walt delivered the newspaper without getting paid for it. Once again in 1912, the Disney family

Cultural Conflict In Ama Ata Aidoo s Dilemma Of A Ghost
The conflict within Dilemma of a Ghost by Ama Ata Aidoo seems to arise from the Eulalie s
foreignness, however; it arises from both party s lack of knowledge of the others culture and Ato
s new Americanized beliefs. The world is comprised of diverse cultures and beliefs. Ideals of one s
culture can be tested when influences from the outside changed a person s ideals. In Dilemma of a
Ghost, not only does cultureconflict arise between Ato s wife Eulalie and Esi but also from Ato
himself and how his ideals have changed since going to school in America. The cultureconflict
between Eulalie and Esi seemed to be conveyed through many mediums. It is conveyed through
roles of the family, differences in food choices, difference in language. The biggest conflict
between Eulalie and Esi is the couple s decision on not having children.
In the prelude, a poem titled I am the bird of the Wayside foreshadows what conflicts the reader
will discover in the play. This an important part of the play because it gives the reader issues that
the play will center around. During act one of the play Ato returns home from schooling that his
mother (Esi) helped put him through. In Ato s family s eyes education in America is better than
education in Ghana. The expectations on Ato is he will get this great education and be able to
come back and repay his mother with this excellent job he will get. Men and women in their culture

ADVERSE POSSESSION
Adverse possession is a method by which a trespasser gains legal title to a property by occupying it
for some period. This kind of ownership may not be necessarily intentional, it can occur as a
mistake where a deed may be faulty. Both personal and real property can be acquired by adverse
possession. However, ownership of property for public use for instance school property or a
highway cannot be lost through adverse possession.
The history of adverse possession can be traced back to the 12th century. During this time, a
squatter could prove his right to ownership of property by the act of possession. Gradually, the
law has been seen to favour the squatters as opposed to the landowners. The law required that the
squatter had proof that he had dispossessed the property exclusively for 60 years in order to bar a
landlord s actions. There were further developments in the Statute of Limitations restricting other
rights of the landlord in 1639. A landlord s title would expire after a squatter had dispossessed a
property for 20 years exclusively. Further amendments reduced the required time period from 20 to
12 years of exclusive dispossession.
The earliest codification in English law of adverse possession was the Statute of Westminster in
1275 which limited actions towards recovery of land by barring the real owners from establishing
claims that were

Women Hollering Creek Summary
While reading the Women Hollering Creek I clearly see how patriarchy dominates the story.
Perfectly describing a social system where the male rules and distributes privileges, where men
are the head of the family and women are seen as property, subservient and not allowed to
exercise any control over their own lives, including marital and sexual control. Cleofila is from
Mexico, where she is raised with traditional values in her culture. She grew up in an environment
where she was easily influenced by the patriarch in her life, her father, and after she married she
continues to be treated as property, when Cleofila is being physically abused by her husband
Juan Pedro. Cleofila s life had always been ruled by the men in her life, and was never allowed to

Life of the Soul Revealed in Sailing to Byzantium and Shadows
The view of death from an aged individual can be one of acceptance of his life s end or one of
mystified wonder over the immortality of the soul. Both William Butler Yeats and David Herbert
Lawrence take the latter view in their respective poems, Sailing to Byzantium and Shadows. By
viewing death as a continuation of their soul s life in a different realm of being, they provide a
comforting solution to the fear that death may be the end of their existence. In W.B. YeatsSailing to
Byzantium and D.H. Lawrence s Shadows, death is addressed from the viewpoint of one preparing
for its eminent arrival; Yeats, however, expresses the belief that he can live... Show more content on

By becoming an artifice of eternity after leaving the land of the young, the traveler allows his

trapped young are enchanted by the music of their carelessness, exhibiting the qualities of being

they can rejoice and louder sing for every tatter in its mortal dress. While the young men continue
their illusion that life will last all summer long in such a place, the dying generations travel on their

Analysis Of The Movie A Few Good Men Essay
Consequences of Obedience Late one night, two Marines, Lance Corporal Harold Dawson and
Private First Class Louden Downey carried out a code red on Private First Class William
Santiago that ultimately resulted in Santiago s death. In the film A Few Good Men, nominated
for an Academy Award for best picture and directed by Rob Reiner, Lieutenant Daniel Kaffee,
investigates the crime and develops his own opinion on whether the murder of Santiago was
ethically stable in terms of Dawson and Downey s mental attitude towards their actions.
Meanwhile, Dawson and Downey have difficulty accepting responsibility for their actions. They
believe they are not at fault because they were following orders from Colonel Nathan R. Jessep.
Santiago s demise shows that always being obedient can be a matter of life or death, and going
against a superior command can possibly be the ethically correct action. Jessup is an aggressive
and forceful leader who does not like to be mocked or questioned. Before Santiago s murder, Jessep
expresses to Lieutenant Colonel Matthew Andrew Markinson that transferring Santiago would be
weak and not the American way (Reiner), Jessep then threatens to kill Lieutenant Johnanthan
Kendrick if Santiago s next report is not perfect. Although, he is not the only leader who is unjust

In July of 2002, Congress swiftly passed the Public Company Accounting Reform and Investors
Protection Act at the time when corporations like Arthur Anderson, Enron and WorldCom fell
due to fraudulent accounting practices and bad internal control. This bill, sponsored by Mike
Oxley (R OH) and Paul Sarbanes (D MD), became known as Sarbanes Oxley Act (SOX).It sought
to restore public confidence in publicly traded companies and their accounting practices, though
the companies listed above were prosecuted on laws that were already in place before SOX. Many

In terms of increasing independent directors in corporate governance, SOX directed the Securities
and Exchange Commission (SEC) to adopt rules that prohibit listings of companies that did not
have an audit committee. The audit committee must consist of independent directors, and if the
committee is in place but did not have enough independent directors, it must add more independent
directors to the board. In addition, at least one of the directors must be a financial expert as defined
by the SEC.
As for the liability of officers and directors, SOX expanded the scope of their legal obligation by
increasing penalties for violating securities law and creating new crimes for certain acts which
included securities fraud, obstruction of justice, and false certification of financial statements. This
part of the SOX act actually modified the current laws that had been in place by increasing the
penalties associated with civil and criminal violation of securities law. It also requires that all
compensation in terms of bonus or incentive based compensation and profit that is earned by
executive officers be returned to the company if these laws are violated.
To increase the disclosure requirement of publicly traded firms, the SEC requires that firms with a

Moral Panics Essay
Question #1 Moral panics is something that the society will always experience. From back in
history to now, there are different cases of moral panics. Most of these panics affect and target
individuals on a daily basis. Rainbow parties, teen sex bracelets, and even bullying has become a
huge moral panic for the society now. Bullyinghave always existed, however, the method and
seriousness of bullying has increased dramatically over time. Cyberbullying is one of the most
troubling and disruptive crimes of our society now. The advancement of technology has
definitely enforced a huge impact on cyberbullying. The internet and its easy access has made it
exceptionally easy to target people, especially juveniles, throughout the day at any given time.
Many popular social networking sites such as Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram is where a lot of
bullying happens to take place. I definitely understand why this has become such an enormous
moral panic because of the negative influences it has on young people or juveniles. The internet
makes it apparent and easy to judge others by the way someone looks, dress, or act. Even though
this is a country of freedom, liberty, and equality, people still are inclined to judge others and
critique them harshly. This cause juveniles to develop a mere sense of conscience, low self esteem,
and a high need for approval or acceptance. First, what is the actual definition of bullying?

Whitman and Neruda as Grassroots Poets Essays
Whitman and Neruda as Grassroots Poets
The familial bond between the two poets [Walt Whitman and Pablo Neruda] points not only to a
much needed reckoning of the affinity between the two hemispheres, but to a deeper need to
establish a basis for an American identity: roots, as Neruda referred to his fundamental link with
Whitman (Nolan 33). Both Walt Whitman and Pablo Neruda have been referred to as poetsof the
people, although it is argued that Neruda with his city and country house, his extensive travels, and
his political connections, was never really one of the mass. Nonetheless, his work and energies
went into supporting the common working man, and not the elite. By the late 1940 s Neruda had

Through their writings these poets explored the meaning of being American (North and South),
and managed to evoke a feeling of oneness, of community between fellow countrymen that had
been fragmented and lacking previously, due largely to colonialism and ties to European
dominance. In Poet Chief, James Nolan writes: It was Whitman who, above all else, infused
Neruda with the courage and direction to dispel the dominant European cultural models of his
own era and to look to his own American landscape and language as a source for the music, voice
and persona of his poetry (33).
The term grassroots is additionally appropriate for the purposes of this analysis when we break
down the word into its component parts. Whitman used the imagery of grass (recall his famous
Leaves of Grass), whereas Neruda uses the imagery of the tree with its intertwining roots to call
up a sense of connected oneness between people in general, but specifically used to unite the
people of America. In his chapter This Ecstatic Nation: Tribe, Mask, and Voice, James Nolan
explores Whitman s and Neruda s voice as a New World construction that ties together the diversity
of their nations through the connection to geography and history. At this point it is extremely
helpful to look at a brief section in which Nolan points out the similarities between Whitman s use
of grass and Neruda s use of trees. (From Nolan 172 173):

Women s Roles in Hiean Court of Medieval Japan
The Heian court of medieval Japan was a progressive and dynamic society where women
commanded a fair amount of power and respect. In many ways it seemed to be the basis of the
rank n file , material culture of today s society. The social structure of society throughout the court
was set up in three different ranks. In chapter two, Genji s friend, To no Chujo explained the three
roles and how they determined the role of women in court. Women of high rank would be the wife
of a high rankingelite, thus responsible for raising the future heirs, women of lower rank were
concubines and often had better relationships with the man than his wife. did It was this
complicated ranking system that led to the abundance of accepted promiscuity, however the two
roles kept a bit of stability and normalcy throughout the court.
Social rank was a main factor in determining women s role in court and from the first chapter of
The Tale of Genji author Maruabu Shikabu stressed the importance of social role. Genji s mother,
often the brunt of slanderous abuse from the Emperors wife, withdrew from court and took Genji
away from court to live with her family. Social importance was best explained though in chapter
two by Genji s friend, To no Chujo. Chujo defines the different ranks to Genji while discussing the
women they have slept with. To suggests that the three different ranks among women were; High

Martial Arts And Physical Fitness
Many families look for opportunities to combine play with physical fitness. Often, these types of
family fitness activities center around biking or hiking together or swimming in the lake during the
summer. However, there are many reasons why these families should consider taking up the martial
arts as one of their family activities. The benefits are many, and they go beyond physical fitness
alone.
Weight Control
While there s no doubt that a martial art like jujitsu or karate has some emotional and spiritual
benefits, people often take up these types of sports to benefit from the physical training aspect of
them. According to the RA BJJ website, these types of fitness activities are better than team sports
for kids.
Taking training in a martial art of some sort allows families to get physically fit and to lose

According to martial artist, Ricardo Almeida, self defense counts as the main reason why people

knowledge that covered all aspects of the print production process. Job functions were complex
and the technology of printing required a craftsman s knowledge of the processes and materials in
order to produce quality printed materials. All of that changed at the end of WWII. As profit
margins began to shrink, printing businesses began heavily investing in new processes and
technology. (Wallace Kalleberg, 1982) Over the next 60 years, developments in offset printing,
electronic prepress and laser technology continuously shortened the print production cycle and
increased production capacity. The introduction of the Xerox copier made the ability to produce a
printed page available to anyone. The use of computers altered the workflow. Word

Technolgy and American Societies Today
Technology has taken an overwhelming presence within American societies today. Careers,
education, volunteering, advertising and now even fundraising can be done solely from one s
computer. With this relatively new trend, companies must take advantage of the time clients spend
online to further their own organizations. There are three simple techniques that companies should
utilize and implement to profit from the new technological era.
The process of affiliate marketing is extremely important for publicity and fundraising. This is
when an organization directs traffic from its own website to a different organization s website in
order to promote a product, good or service of that organization s with the promise of receiving a
percentage of the proceeds in return. Companies can profit significantly from this process if used
correctly and partnered with the right organizations. Many popular companies participate in
affiliate marketing, such as Amazon, local grocery stores, sporting goods stores, etc. It does not cost
anything to establish an affiliate marketing relationship with a company, but can have exponential
rewards.
The concept of online donating and memberships is an excellent way companies can benefit from
the Web. Asking face to face for money can make both the asker and the potential giver
uncomfortable, and with the wrong atmosphere laid, it can cost an organization a substantial
donation. The opportunity to donate online provides clients with a private,

Nella Larsen Gender
Race and sexual ideology are interconnecting all throughout both of these novels. Being a black
woman meant that you had obligations. For example, Nella Larsen, in her novel ripped off the
bandage of what it was like to be a black woman who could pass as a white woman. She took
pride in being who she was even if it hurt to know that she couldn t express her true feelings.
Who could really understand what she was going through because her husband was set in his
own ways being a successful black man, but it was her friend Claire that made her realize that it
is more to live for than being in hiding with her true feelings trapped inside. Clare passed just as
much as Irene did, but was living a lie that eventually got her killed. Irene stood by her notion
that, Everything can t be explained by some general biological phrase (Larsen, 30). Meaning that
the color of skin was only one part of herself that defined her but there was more to her it seems
that no one exactly wanted to seek to find out. Clare s husband claims that he doesn t know that
his wife is actually black and this traps Clare in a life of uncertainty. She adores the world of
privilege that she gets to partake in instead of being treated unfairly as the other black women are
being treated during this era. This is the true examination of how black women were described as...

Both of these women marry a man that could provide for them, unfortunately, the men both were
bad for them. In the novel, Irene elaborates on the fact that she understood why Clare married the
man she married because of Clare s aunt s standards. Clare s aunts wanted her to marry a rich man
so that she could not suffer as they did being poor. Black women were forced to be sexually
promiscuous to find a way out of the endless cycle of slavery according to these

The Positive Effects Of Fashion On Your Life
For my blog post, I am going to be discussing the positive effects fashion can have on your life.
My intended audience will be high school and college students that want to make their daily
lives easier and have somewhat of an interest in fashion. I start off my blog post by asking the
readers a question and making a statement that they would not think is true. After that, I go into
my specifies where I talk about the three main aspects of my statement, fitting in, authority, and
comfort. Each of these topics have their own claims which I use research to back up. I also
would include photos which basically gives you a visual example of each of my points. In my
opinion, the most important part of my post might have to be the evidence I provide backing up
these sources. Some of the evidence, for example the one where it mentions how dressing better
helps you land a job can be crucial especially to my audience. I provide them with things that they
can personally relate to and I believe it will help me reach out to them better. Furthermore, the use
of images can provide a visual example and which my audience might find useful because it
portrays what happens when you follow the tips.
Look Good Feel Better Why should you care about the way you dress ? It is just clothing right, it
can t really make a difference. People view fashion as this superficial thing that has no effect on
you besides protecting your skin. Well, fashion does play a huge role in our lives

Medical Sonography Career Path
The career path that I am choosing to follow is Diagnostic Medical Sonography. This career
involves the use of frequency waves to view tissues; organs and blood flow inside of the body.
My main career goals involve getting into the program, then getting a solid career in this
profession. From there I plan on growing and getting even more education if it is offered, as well
as branching out into other fields of Songraphy.
Sonography is considered fairly new to the medical world. It started back in the 19th century when
people were becoming curious of what the inside of the body looked like. Soon after, the x ray was
invented. Then the French government had a man named Paul Langevine invent an object to detect
enemy submarines during war. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Phase I is the general education course that consists of nine classes SITE. I think my biggest
obstacles will be in this phase. This phase includes my biology classes, which means there is a
lot of memorization required for different bones, tissues, and organs in the body. These classes
can be taken at my own pace and the grades that I receive in these classes will determine if I get
into phase II or not. Because the program at Greenville Tech only accepts 15 students, it is
imperative that I perform to the best of my abilities in every one of my classes. Greenville Tech is
also one of the few accredited programs in South Carolina, which makes it even more harder to be
come a Sonographer. I must also have to attend a career talk to get into the program, which
basically talks about a career in Diagnostic Medical Sonography and informs students on what to
expect going into the program. Phase II of course, is the actual program for Diagnostic Medical
Sonography. It is a year long clinical and class environment where I will learn hands on how to
be a Diagnostic Medial Sonographer. Altogether, becoming a sonographer could take from 2 4
years depending on the amounts of classes taken each semester, as well as the program itself.
Before officially becoming a sonographer in South Carolina, I will have to take a test. It is called

Why Was The Battle Of Gettysburg A Turning Point Essay
The Battle of Gettysburg in the Civil war
Why was the Battle of Gettysburg a turning Point in the Civil War?
The Battle of Gettysburg was fought July 1863, in and around the town of Gettysburg,
Pennsylvania, by Union and Confederate forces during the American Civil War. The battle
involved the largest number of casualties (around 23,049 in the Union army and around 28,063
in the Confederate army) of the entire war and is often described as the war s turning point. But ,
why was that battle the war s turning point? Well, the Battle of Gettysburgwas a turning point of

reason of why did the Battle of Gettysburg was a turning point of the war.
The last important reason of why was the Battle of Gettysburg the turning point of the Civil
War was the political and economical issues that the Confederate Army had at that
time.General Robert E. Lee marched the confederate army to Gettysburg. It was found in the
letters that he wrote to Jefferson Davis (President of the South) that he didn t want to continue in
his position as general because he couldn t afford it. He as General, wasn t able for the duties in
his position,he couldn t even accomplish what itself desired (because of the Battle losses and
non control of the situation)Therefore the Unionist took the control of the Battle and the
Confederates retreated soon. That was the third and last main point that did of The Battle of
Gettysburg a turning point in the Civil War.

Ray Shultz s Spring Awakening
On Thursday, October 19th, Ray Shultz, Professor of theater arts, and the theatre company,
presented a lecture/demonstration on the soon to be staged musical Spring Awakening. Several
members of the company as well as Professor Shultz spoke about the musical and gave the
audience some of the background informations, as well as enacted three excerpts of the
production. The musical, Shultz explains, was written in the Spring of 1890, and although at the
beginning was considered scandalous, it is now considered a classic of dramatic literature, as it
has influenced and anticipated a lot of other dramatic forms. It is a very influential play even
though not well known to mainstream audiences. At the time of its creation it was very reviled and
controversial, and because of that it was not given a sage until 1906 in Berlin. After than, the
production was banned in many places until 1974, when in England the... Show more content on

during the 1960 s and 70 s, when women fought for the right of contraception, which made the play

adults were not made aware of these topics. In the play the adults play a form of willful ignorance.

that could be applied to 21st century American teenagers. The children from the beginning of the

The Girl
Once upon a time there was a young Vietnamese girl who was beautiful and loved by everyone,
especially her grandmother. When she turned fifteen, her grandmother gave her a bright white
silk Ao Dai. It was the most elegant dress in all of Vietnam, so she wore it to school everyday.
Even though every other girl worn similar white Ao Dai s, she was given the name Little White
Bride. One day before school, her mother asked her to bring her grandmother the honeycomb cake
they made the night before, but she knew the journey would be dangerous. Her mother warned her
of the hostile men that would go to any lengths to get a girl to get into a van with them, so men
in China could have beautiful young brides. However the girl was brave, maybe a little too
brave, and shrugged it off. So she left her house with the cake and her schoolbooks and started her
walk into the country. Her grandmother lived only fifteen minutes away near the rice fields, so
she didn t feel a need to rush. As she walked past an abandoned field, a young boywho looked about
the same age as her was riding up behind her on a rickety old bike. He was coming straight towards
her with a surprised look on his face. He slowed down and said You know how dangerous it is for a
girl of your age and beauty to be out here all alone? Yes, but I m not worried, I ve only run into you
so far and you don t look scary. Plus I m already half way to my grandmother s house. Is the house

The Importance Of National Interest In Indonesia
1No National Interest or Environmental Concern in Indonesia s GATS Schedule
There is evidence to suggest that trade agreements can and do contain provisions aimed at
ameliorating environmental damage caused as a result of tourism development. However,
Indonesia has not included any such provisions in its own agreements. Indonesia s schedule under
the GATS (especially in mode 3) allowed the presence of FDI in tourism in Bali. This schedule
potentially contributes to environmental damage associated with tourism because it has not yet put
any concern to national interest or public interest that justifies the government to impose measures
in order to protect those interests, including the environment.

In Finland s schedule, especially on mode 3, it expressly states that:
Acquisition of shares by foreign owners giving more than one third of the voting rights of a major
Finnish company or a major business undertaking (with more than 1000 employees or with a
turnover exceeding 1000 million Finnish markka or with a balance sheet total exceeding 1000
million Finnish markka) is subject to confirmation by the Finnish authorities; the confirmation may
be denied only if an important national interest would be jeopardized.
Some WTO members have gone further by putting a particular concern on FDI in tourism to protect
what they have categorised as economic, social and environmental interest. In European
Communities schedule in tourism stated that FDI authorisation can be denied in order to protect
areas of particular historic and artistic interest in Spain, Greece, and Portugal. Meanwhile, in Italy,
a local economic needs test has to be done before opening of new bars, cafГ©s and restaurants that
owned by foreigners. In Switzerland, its tourism schedule expressly requires that:
Federal law enables cantons to grant licence for [foreign] restaurants based on economic needs
(assessment of economic needs is based on criteria such as population, degree of built up area, type
of neighbourhood, touristical interests, number of existing restaurants).
In relation to the establishment of hotels and restaurants, China tourism schedule then stipulates that:

  • 5. Same Zygotic Twins 1.Twins can occur in two main ways which is why there is two main categories of twins. One type of twins occurs from one sperm fertilizes one ovum. This fertilized egg begins to duplicate and divide, however, if the fertilized egg splits apart completely in early development, two separate organisms start to grow creating monozygotic twins or more commonly called, identical twins. With monozygotic twins, because they split from the same zygote, they share identical genetics. However, a more common type of twins is dizygotic twins, which occur twice as often in monozygotic twins. Sometimes more than one ovum is released in a given month and when this occurs, two sperm fertilize the two ova, which makes two completely different fertilized eggs. Since dizygotic twins share the same parents, each has half of their genes in common, like any other sibling. 2. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... As stated before, identical twins come from the same zygote which causes them to have the same genotype. Their genotype is what causes their physical appearance, psychological traits, and more to be the same. However, nurture always affects nature so the phenotype of the identical twins do not necessarily have the exact same phenotype. Each twin usually develops their own identities and personalities which also causes there phenotypes to sometimes be different. 3.When studying twins, researchers mainly study identical twins because they strive to see the influence of nature and nurture on the traits of these identical twins. One way of doing this is by splitting the twins up at birth. Obviously, the twins are going to share genotypes and so they are going to has similar influences of nature, but researcher aim to see if interests, habits, and skills are influenced more by nature or nurture. By splitting the identical twins up, it is easier to see which trait is influenced by either nature or ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 6. The Personality Of Personality Variables Personality variables have long been hypothesized to be related to expressions of feelings and behaviors (Eysenck, 1992) and others have shown direct relationships with affect (Costa McCrae, 1984; Diener Emmons, 1984). There have been significant relationships reported especially for the traits of extraversion and neuroticism. Generally, extraversion is positively correlated with positive affect and neuroticism is positively correlated with negative affect. Results such as these make sense in that extraverted individuals tend to enjoy human interaction, and be talkative, assertive, and gregarious, especially in social situations. Introverts on the other hand, tend to be more withdrawn, and take more pleasure in solitary activities such as reading and writing. It has been hypothesized that extroverts experience higher levels of subjective well being, and this may be due to the fact that they engage in more social interactions providing the opportunity for more life circumstances, which in turn create the opportunity to experience more positive affectivity (Larsen Ketelaar, 1991). The personality trait neuroticism is characterized by anxiety, moodiness, fear, and frustration. Neurotic individuals also tend to respond more negatively to stressors and to report ordinary situations as threatening and minor frustrations as hopelessly difficult (Ormel, Jeronimus, Kotov, Riese, Bos, Hankin, 2013). The game operates on the dark web, shared with others via a special link and emphasizes not disclosing its operation to law enforcement. Nerve proves that the influences are strong enough to create a romantic relationship, or interpreted more symbolically, the power to control major life decisions. • 8. The Attrition Problem in Colleges and Universities INTRODUCTION Intense competition has made student attrition a concern for colleges and universities. Attrition is costly and generates considerable concerns for educational institutions (Tinto, 1993). This is especially true for small schools that do not have huge endowments, and must depend upon tuition and fees to support programming. The loss of students has a detrimental impact upon budgeting as the costs involved in recruiting new students is definitely higher than the cost to retain existing students (Braunstein, Lesser, Pescatrice, 2006). Small colleges and universities are looking for ways to differentiate from the competition by offering creative programs that will meet the needs and wants of students. These schools then ... Further studies suggest that students must take control of the college experience by getting involved in career planning, joining campus organizations, developing internships, and providing service to the community (Letcher Neves, 2010). The authors go on to suggest that instructors need to help students gain self confidence as well as providing a valuable educational experience and a solid learning environment. Giese and Cote (2000) have found that there is no single definition of customer satisfaction, and suggest that satisfaction can be explained best as a response to an evaluation process. The authors further suggest that problems occur when selecting a definition and comparing results when operationalizing the definition. Therefore, organizations must use care tailoring the survey specifically to the type of customer satisfaction questions which can be customized for particular needs. Other studies suggest there is a relationship between variables relating to the students goal achievement and social integration into academic life (Wetzel, O Toole, Peterson, 1999). Academic and social factors appeared to be the most important reason for persisting to graduation. Wetzel et al., (1999) further found that progress in academic work measured by GPA and hours attempted and earned guided the attrition/retention decision. It is important to choose the right management style for each situation, which is a key to success for an organization. All managers use a management process which consists of planning, organizing, leading and controlling. So they have to perform many roles in an enterprise. What they can do with various situations will totally depend on their style of management. A management style is an overall method of leadership used by a manager (Lessem et al, 1999). The reason is that this sense of collective responsibility has positively affected the quality standards. Product quality is cooperatively achieved by workers and managers. Japanese tend to believe the group is more important than the individual (Alston, 1986). In terms of decision making, they probably attempt to gain consensus even if it might require more time. As to Americans, who are almost self centered, they apparently choose to make quick decisions on their own for immediate resolution (Anderson, 2009). The second factor is staff belonging. The general principle of Japanese management is that workers form a family (Alston, 1986). As a part of the corporate family , every member not only pays attention to their own salaries, but also considers the development of the company. Pay is only one reward. There is also a sense of belongingness and support that employees receive from their corporations. On the contrary, Americans tend to indicate that there is no need for them to become familiar with one organization and colleagues before they are off again on their trips (Wellens, 1980). Perhaps individual freedom is more essential than staff belonging in their mind. This different attitude leads to diverse management styles. • 22. Volatile Aromatic Organic Compounds 1. Introduction The release of volatile aromatic organic compounds into the environment is a serious problem as they distribute between the different phases in natural systems. Sediments can be considered as a sink for volatile aromatic organic compounds because of their hydrophobic nature and the resulting affinity to the sediment s organic matter. Organic matter consists of soft carbon, where portioning is the main sorption process and hard carbon, where pore filling mechanisms dominate (Zhao et al., 2002; Chai et al., 2006). Consequently, sorption/desorption processes are the most important factors that determine the fate of volatile aromatic organic compounds in the environment. The extensive production and release of aromatic organic compounds has led to a widespread contamination of soils and sediments with these pollutants throughout the world, threatening drinking water resources, especially petroleum hydrocarbons as constituents of gasoline such as Benzene, 1,2 dichlorobenzene, Toluene and m xylene. It was proposed that sorption of the sorbate molecules may cause deformation of flexible sorbent solids, such as natural organic matter and organo clays resulting in an entrapment of sorbed molecules during desorption (Weber et al., 2002; Lu and Pignatello, 2004). Several researchers have tried to associate the maximum sorption capacities of organic compounds with the sorbed amounts in the slow and very slow desorbing domains (Van Heuvel et al., 2005; Van Heuvel and ... Adverse Possession Is A Method By Student s Name ADVERSE POSSESSION By Student s Name Code + Course Name Institution of Learning City, State Date ADVERSE POSSESSION Adverse possession is a method by which a trespasser gains legal title to a property by occupying it for some period. This kind of ownership may not be necessarily intentional, it can occur as a mistake where a deed may be faulty. Both personal and real property can be acquired by adverse possession. However, ownership of property for public use for instance school property or a highway cannot be lost through adverse possession. The history of adverse possession can be traced back to the 12th century. During this time, a squatter could prove his right to ownership of property by the act of possession. Gradually, the law has been seen to favour the squatters as opposed to the landowners. The law required that the squatter had proof that he had dispossessed the property exclusively for 60 years in order to bar a landlord s actions. There were further developments in the Statute of Limitations restricting other rights of the landlord in 1639. A landlord s title would expire after a squatter had dispossessed a property for 20 years exclusively. Further amendments reduced the required time period from 20 to 12 years of exclusive dispossession. The earliest codification in English law of adverse possession was the Statute of Westminster in 1275 which limited actions towards recovery of land by barring the real owners from establishing claims that were ... Whitman and Neruda as Grassroots Poets Essays Whitman and Neruda as Grassroots Poets The familial bond between the two poets [Walt Whitman and Pablo Neruda] points not only to a much needed reckoning of the affinity between the two hemispheres, but to a deeper need to establish a basis for an American identity: roots, as Neruda referred to his fundamental link with Whitman (Nolan 33). Both Walt Whitman and Pablo Neruda have been referred to as poetsof the people, although it is argued that Neruda with his city and country house, his extensive travels, and his political connections, was never really one of the mass. Through their writings these poets explored the meaning of being American (North and South), and managed to evoke a feeling of oneness, of community between fellow countrymen that had been fragmented and lacking previously, due largely to colonialism and ties to European dominance. In Poet Chief, James Nolan writes: It was Whitman who, above all else, infused Neruda with the courage and direction to dispel the dominant European cultural models of his own era and to look to his own American landscape and language as a source for the music, voice and persona of his poetry (33). The term grassroots is additionally appropriate for the purposes of this analysis when we break down the word into its component parts. Whitman used the imagery of grass (recall his famous Leaves of Grass), whereas Neruda uses the imagery of the tree with its intertwining roots to call up a sense of connected oneness between people in general, but specifically used to unite the people of America. In chapter two, Genji s friend, To no Chujo explained the three roles and how they determined the role of women in court. Women of high rank would be the wife of a high rankingelite, thus responsible for raising the future heirs, women of lower rank were concubines and often had better relationships with the man than his wife. did It was this complicated ranking system that led to the abundance of accepted promiscuity, however the two roles kept a bit of stability and normalcy throughout the court. Social rank was a main factor in determining women s role in court and from the first chapter of The Tale of Genji author Maruabu Shikabu stressed the importance of social role. Genji s mother, often the brunt of slanderous abuse from the Emperors wife, withdrew from court and took Genji away from court to live with her family. Social importance was best explained though in chapter two by Genji s friend, To no Chujo. Chujo defines the different ranks to Genji while discussing the women they have slept with.
