The Venture Philanthropy Foundation was set up in 2007 by Sir Ian Wood and his family to address societal inequalities through strategic projects and partnerships. It focuses on two key areas: making markets work for the poor in Sub-Saharan Africa, and developing young people in Scotland through the Youth Philanthropy Initiative (YPI) program, launched in 2008. By 2014/2015, YPI engaged over 40,000 Scottish youth and distributed £1.5 million to local charities. The program now operates in 145 secondary schools across 24 local authorities.

Editor's Notes
Bill Gates: Founder of Microsoft
Worth approximately $56 Billion
Together with his wife, Bill Gates established the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation- the largest (transparently operated) charitable foundation in the world.
This was brought about by an increasing awareness of the expectations others had of him and his wealth, coupled with a focus on those global problems that are ignored by governments and other organisations.
As such, it is Bill Gates intention to give 95% of his family wealth to charity.
The primary focus of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation is their Global Health Programme that supports global vaccination programmes targeted at TB and the eradication of Polio, in addition to HIV research. The Foundation also supports a broader Global Development Programme focused on financial services for the poor, agricultural development and global catastrophe response; and a United States programme largely focused on education and libraries.
Leonardo DiCaprio: American actor and film producer.
A committed environmentalist who actively supports the Wildlife Conservation Society, campaigns regarding climate change, and has actively supported relief efforts in response to such dnatural disasters as the Haiti Earthquakes.
J K Rowling: British Author
Rowling has progressed from living on social security to multi-millionaire status in a period of five years.
In 2000, Rowling established the Volant Charitable Trust, which uses its annual budget of £5.1 million to combat poverty and social inequality. The fund also gives to organisations that aid children, one parent families, and multiple sclerosis research.
Rowling said, "I think you have a moral responsibility when you've been given far more than you need, to do wise things with it and give intelligently."

You each have time, the capacity and undoubted talent to make a difference, and through YPI you have the money.
An opportunity to highlight the distinction between philanthropy and charity.
There are a number of definitions of philanthropy:
1. The effort or inclination to increase the well-being of humankind, as by charitable aid or donations.
2. Love of humankind in general.
3. Something, such as an activity or institution, intended to promote human welfare.
In short Philanthropy is the giving up of your time, talent and money in order to find solutions to problems in society.
A famous Chinese proverb captures the essence of philanthropy well:
‘Give a man a fish and he eats for a day, teach a man to fish and he’ll eat for a lifetime.’
Philanthropists are: Engaged, creative, caring, solution orientated and passionate.
