This paper discusses challenges in chaining geographic web services. It notes that while there are many services that provide functions like visualizing vector data, geocoding, and geoprocessing, chaining these services together is non-trivial due to differences in data models, scales, semantics, and implicit linking of data. The paper also notes challenges in handling massive image datasets and integrating services that were created within specific communities and have different spatial linguistic regions. The authors propose combining semantic and syntactic descriptions to more effectively chain geographic services.
