4. The Institute of Chartered Accountants of
India
The Institute of Chartered Accountants of India
(ICAI) is a statutory body established by an Act
of Parliament, viz.
The Chartered Accountants Act, 1949 (Act
No.XXXVIII of 1949) for regulating the
profession of Chartered Accountancy in the
country.
The Institute, functions under the
administrative control of the Ministry of
Corporate Affairs, Government of India.
The ICAI is the second largest
professional body of Chartered
Accountants in the world, with a strong
5. The affairs of the ICAI are managed by a
Council in accordance with the provisions
of the Chartered Accountants Act, 1949
and the Chartered Accountants
Regulations, 1988.
The Council constitutes of 40 members
of whom 32 are elected by the Chartered
Accountants and remaining 8 are
nominated by the Central Government
generally representing the Comptroller
and Auditor General of India, Securities
and Exchange Board of India, Ministry
of Corporate Affairs, Ministry of
Finance and other stakeholders.

the members.

opportunities for its members.The institute
issues certificates of practice to its
members and exercises disciplinary
Jurisdiction as quasi-judicial authority over
their profession and their conduct.The
institute also works up with universities
and other education providers in
commerce and industry in shaping up their
curricula and content.A monthly journal
titled "The Chartered Accountant" is
published by the institute

17. The implementation of multi level vision for the profession
of Indian Chartered Accountants requires the involvement
of several actors-(1) each individual student and Chartered
Accountant in practice/service, (2) each CA firm, and (3)
The Institute.
The implementation is an ongoing process.
Therefore, the task of Committee in this phase could be
delegated to various committees. This will speed up the
process of implementation and help assume ownership of
the actions by various committee
