Objectives
i. To understand different types training institutes and courses available.
ii. To understand the working and aim of these institutes.
ITI
What is ITI?
ITI stands for Industrial Training Institute which is a government training institute. ITIs offer
training in various trades. ITI trades and courses focus on skill development in students. They churn
out skilled professionals each year and thus develop the skilled work force in India.
Discussion on ITI
An ITI course is aimed at providing vocational training. Compared to traditional educational
courses, ITI courses are trade-specific. There are various courses running in them better known as
“trades”. More than hundred trades course are offered to the students.
Some trades are given below:
1. Electrician
2. Fitter
3. Draughtsman civil
4. Draughtsman mechanical
5. Diesel mechanic
6. Electronic mechanic
7. Turner
8. Machinist
9. Information technology
10. Refrigeration and air condition
11. Instrument mechanic
12. Wireman
13. Tool and die Maker
14. Stenographer
15. Automobile
16. Motor mechanic

FIG. 1.1
2. ITI courses are primarily classified into two categories – technical and non-technical. Technical
courses aim to provide insight into fields of engineering, mathematics or science whereas non-
technical ITI courses provide insight into soft-skills.
There is Institute with name I.T.I in all over India who provide training for various industries
like Mechanical, Electronics, Information Technologies, Fabrication, Automobile, Diesel Mechanics,
Lift Mechanics, Computer Software, Sheet metal, Electrical, Plumbing, Wire man etc. It is like
diploma but with lower educational qualification. These institutes are actually backbones of any
industry, imparting training to make the aspirant “skilled” in any field that he / she is choosing.
Basically, ITI produce skilled manpower / man-force which may be suitable to any industries. There
are both Government as well as Private Institutes providing training. The certificate may be NCVT
(National Council of Vocational Training) or SCVT (State Council of Vocational Training)
depending on Institute and Trade.
DGT
What is DGT?
DGT stands for Directorate General of Training in Ministry of Skill Development and
Entrepreneurship is the apex organisation for development and coordination at National level for the
programmes relating to vocational training including Women's Vocational Training. Industrial
Training Institutes are under the administrative and financial control of State Governments or Union
Territory Administrations.
Discussion on DGT
DGT operates Vocational Training Schemes in some of the specialized areas through field
institutes under its direct control. Development of these programmes at national level, particularly in
the area concerning common policies, common standards and procedures, training of instructors and
trade testing are the responsibility of the DGT.
All India Trade Tests (AITT) are conducted by the DGT sponsored by National Council for
Vocational Training (NCVT) for its various schemes. AITT under Craftsmen Training Scheme (CTS)
is conducted twice a year for more than 25 Lakh candidates.
Major functions of the DGT are:
To frame overall policies, norms and standards for vocational training.
To diversify, update and expand training facilities in terms of craftsmen and crafts
instructor training.
FIG.1.2
3. To organize and conduct specialized training and research at the specially established
training Institutes.
To implement, regulate and increase the scope of training of apprentices under the
Apprentices Act, 1961.
To organize vocational training programmes for women.
To provide vocational guidance and employment counselling.
Assist scheduled castes/scheduled tribes and persons with disabilities by enhancing their
capabilities for wage employment and self-employment.
Since DGT has been striving ahead in this technological age for hand holding the youth across
the country, it has ensured digital skilling and industry readiness of the 23.15 Lakh trainees in the ITI
ecosystem by making ‘Employability Skills’ as a mandatory component of their curriculum.
DGT is in process of constantly upgrading and modernizing the ITIs in terms of their
infrastructure, pedagogy, curriculum and technology interventions. Accordingly, new-age courses in
IoT, Renewable Energy, Additive Manufacturing Technology (3-D Printing), Mechatronics, Drone
Technology, etc. have been recently introduced in the ITIs. Further, with an objective to strengthen
Industry connect and impart industry relevant training, DGT has introduced the Dual System of
Training (DST) model wherein the ITI’s are being encouraged to join hands with multiple industry
partners for providing mandatory industrial exposure to the trainees during the course of their training.
Hence a part of their skill training takes place in the industry environment. The Flexi- MoU model
offering customized, industry relevant training, entirely on the industry premises has also been
introduced for providing flexibility to create tailored skilling programmes.
NCVT
What is NCVT?
The National Council for Vocational Training (NCVT) is a counselling body that was
