CHARACTERISTICS
1. The teacher is the center of knowledge
and in charge of learning.
2. Students are usually passively receiving
information.
3. The instructor’s role is to be primary
information giver and primary evaluator.
4. Students are viewed as “empty vessels”
who passively receive knowledge from
their teachers.
5. Teacher Centered Instruction is fairly low-tech,
often relying on the use of textbooks and
workbooks instead of computers.
6. Assessments are in many cases only carried
out as summative and not formative evaluations
and they rarely address qualitative issues of the
learner’s progress.

What is student- centered learning?
Student-centered learning has been defined
most simply as an approach to learning in which
learners choose not only what to study but also
how and why that topic might be of interest
(Rogers, 1983).
There has been increasing emphasis in recent years
on moving away from traditional teaching toward student-centered
learning. This paradigm shift has encouraged moving power from the
instructor to the learner, treating the learner as a co-creator in the
teaching and learning process.

This study would be significant to the management of the FEATI
University where the teaching and non-teaching staffs are presently
employed; this research study could provide an in depth understanding
of schools further improvement and development. This will also serve
equal importance to the College of Education, Arts and Sciences
professors and Marine instructors, they will be more aware on the
effects of student- centered learning in regards to student’s self-
expression as well as to the students of FEATI University especially to
marine students, the outcome of the research topic provides insights of
how Student- centered learning will help them in their future careers.
Furthermore, the students will be able to realize their self-worth for
they are the ones really involved in the process of learning.
