 Legal inquiry into the circumstances and the
cause of death of a deceased person
 Done in cases of sudden, suspicious and
unnatural deaths.

6. In India, 2 types of inquests are followed
 Police inquest &
 Magistrate inquest

7. POLICE INQUEST
 Officer-in-charge(usually sub inspector) conducts
inquest[ S.174, Cr.p.c]
 Police officer making inquest- investigating
officer[I.O]

8.  When officer-in-charge receives information,
immediately gives intimation to the nearest
Executive Magistrate
Proceeds to the place where the body of deceased
person is

9. In the presence of 2 or more respectable
persons(Panchas) makes investigation[ S.175,Cr.p.c]
Prepares report on of the apparent cause of death
Report signed by I.O and Panchanama


10.  Suspected foul play-PM examination to nearest Govt.
doctor, along with requisition and copy of inquest
 Report forwarded to the Magistrate
