15-50% of new teachers leave the profession within the first 5 years, costing an estimated $2.2 billion annually to replace them. While teaching can be challenging, teachers are considered the most important school-based factor impacting student learning. Between 1999-2005, nearly half of new teachers hired in New York were uncertified or alternatively certified. New teachers often report feeling isolated, undervalued, and lacking administrative support. However, technology offers opportunities for teachers to connect and learn from each other online.

23. About TC Program Completers (2000-2005)... Over 80% of the PCs initially taught in schools that were within 15 miles from Teachers College and PC’s residence, another 10% were first employed within 30 miles.

About TC Program Completers (2000-2005)... 25% of the PCs were first employed in schools where fewer than 5.1% of their students received free- or reduced-price lunches; another 25% of the PCs were first employed in schools where more than 62.5% of the students received free- or reduced-price lunches. 25% of the PCs were first employed in schools where fewer than 5.3% of the students were Black or Hispanic; another 25% were employed in schools where more than 93% of the students were Black or Hispanic.

Mathematics Education had the highest proportion of Black and Hispanic PCs (17%) followed by Literacy (14%) and Elementary Education (13%). Mathematics Education PCs had the highest proportion of males (35%) followed by Social Studies (32%).
