Before 1980, most cell control and management software was written by the user using the C
programming language. True False
Solution
False
The C programming language was devised in the early 1970s as a system implementation
language for the nascent Unix operating system. Derived from the typeless language BCPL, it
evolved a type structure; created on a tiny machine as a tool to improve a meager programming
environment, it has become one of the dominant languages of today
C came into being in the years 1969-1973, in parallel with the early development of the Unix
operating system; the most creative period occurred during 1972. Another spate of changes
peaked between 1977 and 1979, when portability of the Unix system was being demonstrated. In
the middle of this second period, the first widely available description of the language appeared:
The C Programming Language,often called the `white book\' or `K&R\' [Kernighan 78]. Finally,
in the middle 1980s, the language was officially standardized by the ANSI X3J11 committee,
which made further changes. Until the early 1980s, although compilers existed for a variety of
machine architectures and operating systems, the language was almost exclusively associated
with Unix; more recently, its use has spread much more widely, and today it is among the
languages most commonly used throughout the computer industry.
The late 1960s were a turbulent era for computer systems research at Bell Telephone
Laboratories [Ritchie 78] [Ritchie 84]. The company was pulling out of the Multics project
[Organick 75], which had started as a joint venture of MIT, General Electric, and Bell Labs; by
1969, Bell Labs management, and even the researchers, came to believe that the promises of
Multics could be fulfilled only too late and too expensively. Even before the GE-645 Multics
machine was removed from the premises, an informal group, led primarily by Ken Thompson,
had begun investigating alternatives..

Providing Globus Services to Users of JASMIN for Environmental Data AnalysisGlobus
JASMIN is the UK’s high-performance data analysis platform for environmental science, operated by STFC on behalf of the UK Natural Environment Research Council (NERC). In addition to its role in hosting the CEDA Archive (NERC’s long-term repository for climate, atmospheric science & Earth observation data in the UK), JASMIN provides a collaborative platform to a community of around 2,000 scientists in the UK and beyond, providing nearly 400 environmental science projects with working space, compute resources and tools to facilitate their work. High-performance data transfer into and out of JASMIN has always been a key feature, with many scientists bringing model outputs from supercomputers elsewhere in the UK, to analyse against observational or other model data in the CEDA Archive. A growing number of JASMIN users are now realising the benefits of using the Globus service to provide reliable and efficient data movement and other tasks in this and other contexts. Further use cases involve long-distance (intercontinental) transfers to and from JASMIN, and collecting results from a mobile atmospheric radar system, pushing data to JASMIN via a lightweight Globus deployment. We provide details of how Globus fits into our current infrastructure, our experience of the recent migration to GCSv5.4, and of our interest in developing use of the wider ecosystem of Globus services for the benefit of our user community.
Innovating Inference - Remote Triggering of Large Language Models on HPC Clus...Globus
Large Language Models (LLMs) are currently the center of attention in the tech world, particularly for their potential to advance research. In this presentation, we'll explore a straightforward and effective method for quickly initiating inference runs on supercomputers using the vLLM tool with Globus Compute, specifically on the Polaris system at ALCF. We'll begin by briefly discussing the popularity and applications of LLMs in various fields. Following this, we will introduce the vLLM tool, and explain how it integrates with Globus Compute to efficiently manage LLM operations on Polaris. Attendees will learn the practical aspects of setting up and remotely triggering LLMs from local machines, focusing on ease of use and efficiency. This talk is ideal for researchers and practitioners looking to leverage the power of LLMs in their work, offering a clear guide to harnessing supercomputing resources for quick and effective LLM inference.
In software engineering, the right architecture is essential for robust, scalable platforms. Wix has undergone a pivotal shift from event sourcing to a CRUD-based model for its microservices. This talk will chart the course of this pivotal journey.
Event sourcing, which records state changes as immutable events, provided robust auditing and "time travel" debugging for Wix Stores' microservices. Despite its benefits, the complexity it introduced in state management slowed development. Wix responded by adopting a simpler, unified CRUD model. This talk will explore the challenges of event sourcing and the advantages of Wix's new "CRUD on steroids" approach, which streamlines API integration and domain event management while preserving data integrity and system resilience.
Participants will gain valuable insights into Wix's strategies for ensuring atomicity in database updates and event production, as well as caching, materialization, and performance optimization techniques within a distributed system.
Join us to discover how Wix has mastered the art of balancing simplicity and extensibility, and learn how the re-adoption of the modest CRUD has turbocharged their development velocity, resilience, and scalability in a high-growth environment.

How to Position Your Globus Data Portal for Success Ten Good PracticesGlobus
Science gateways allow science and engineering communities to access shared data, software, computing services, and instruments. Science gateways have gained a lot of traction in the last twenty years, as evidenced by projects such as the Science Gateways Community Institute (SGCI) and the Center of Excellence on Science Gateways (SGX3) in the US, The Australian Research Data Commons (ARDC) and its platforms in Australia, and the projects around Virtual Research Environments in Europe. A few mature frameworks have evolved with their different strengths and foci and have been taken up by a larger community such as the Globus Data Portal, Hubzero, Tapis, and Galaxy. However, even when gateways are built on successful frameworks, they continue to face the challenges of ongoing maintenance costs and how to meet the ever-expanding needs of the community they serve with enhanced features. It is not uncommon that gateways with compelling use cases are nonetheless unable to get past the prototype phase and become a full production service, or if they do, they don't survive more than a couple of years. While there is no guaranteed pathway to success, it seems likely that for any gateway there is a need for a strong community and/or solid funding streams to create and sustain its success. With over twenty years of examples to draw from, this presentation goes into detail for ten factors common to successful and enduring gateways that effectively serve as best practices for any new or developing gateway.
Developing Distributed High-performance Computing Capabilities of an Open Sci...Globus
COVID-19 had an unprecedented impact on scientific collaboration. The pandemic and its broad response from the scientific community has forged new relationships among public health practitioners, mathematical modelers, and scientific computing specialists, while revealing critical gaps in exploiting advanced computing systems to support urgent decision making. Informed by our team’s work in applying high-performance computing in support of public health decision makers during the COVID-19 pandemic, we present how Globus technologies are enabling the development of an open science platform for robust epidemic analysis, with the goal of collaborative, secure, distributed, on-demand, and fast time-to-solution analyses to support public health.
First Steps with Globus Compute Multi-User EndpointsGlobus
In this presentation we will share our experiences around getting started with the Globus Compute multi-user endpoint. Working with the Pharmacology group at the University of Auckland, we have previously written an application using Globus Compute that can offload computationally expensive steps in the researcher's workflows, which they wish to manage from their familiar Windows environments, onto the NeSI (New Zealand eScience Infrastructure) cluster. Some of the challenges we have encountered were that each researcher had to set up and manage their own single-user globus compute endpoint and that the workloads had varying resource requirements (CPUs, memory and wall time) between different runs. We hope that the multi-user endpoint will help to address these challenges and share an update on our progress here.
2. Introduction
Dennis M.Ritchie – The father of
the “C” programming language
He was born on September 9,
1941, in Bronxville, New York.
Dennis was a scientist and
physicist who graduated from
Harvard University and was a
professor of applied
mathematics.
3. Ritchie started working at the Computer
Science Research center at Bell's labs in
1967, where his father had previously
worked.
Due to her dedication of about 15 hours of
work per day, both at home and in the labs,
he was head of the Systems Software
Research Department at Lucent
Technologies (an American
telecommunications company).
In 1990 she became head of the technical
research department at Bell Laboratories.
WORK & LIFE
4. He was in the labs there he met Ken
Thompson and it was in 1983 that they
both created the Multics project that
initially did not arouse the interest of Bell
executives, but with which they later won
the ACM Turing Award.
This award was received for his
development of the theory of generic
operating systems and for his
implementation of the UNIX operating
system, which was launched in 1973.
However, they did not have copyright on it.
THEIR PARTICIPATION
5. A year before the release of UNIX, Ritchie had
already developed a programming language that
later joined the B language, developed by
Thompson, giving rise to the C language.
With these developments, Ritchie has gained an
important place in the history of the computer
industry.
The C language continues to be used in the
development of applications and operating
systems and its influence can be seen in more
recent programming languages, such as C ++,
Java, C #, PHP and JavaScript.
THEIR INVENTION
COMPUTER

LANGUAGE
6. Both of these men died in the same month of the same year. Steve was largely considered
a hero, while Dennis was largely ignored by the world. Only a handful of programmers who
know the real value of Dennis work even know of his death.
Without Steve Jobs there is no iPhone, iPad, iPod, or Macintosh. Without Dennis there is no
C language. Without C, there is no Unix, Windows, or Linux. Without C there is no C++ nor
Objective C. There is no MacOS X, no IOS, no Photoshop, no Firefox, no Safari, no Google
Chrome, no Playstation, no XBox. In fact, 90% of the applications in the world are written in
C or C++ or Objective C.
