The document summarizes the art movement De Stijl, which was founded in 1917 and promoted a geometric style using only horizontal and vertical lines and primary colors. It then discusses three poster ideas for an upcoming exhibition on De Stijl, including using stained glass, shapes forming an art display, and simple geometric shapes with exhibition details. A schedule is outlined assigning tasks like the background, title, and text placement. The final poster design is shown, and an evaluation notes its adherence to De Stijl styles and readable text. Areas for improvement include creating their own background and using a bolder font. Problems encountered and solved in the process are also summarized.
Doodle art is a warm-up exercise that allows students to learn how an artist thinks using elements of art and principles of design, It is how an artist plays and it is fun!
Art, and especially visual arts, is the topic that requires both background knowledge and imagination. Most teachers are afraid of it, the same as most students are bored with it. However, with the concept maps and cause-and-effect sentences it may become a source of fun in the English classroom. So, to make teaching of art more effective, I suggest a couple of ideas, which will also be the key points for the workshop:
1) Basic history of art - it gives us not just facts but useful vocabulary for describing works of art.
2) Elements of design and what they mean.
3) How to describe a picture or a photograph.
A rehash of a talk on the basics of design and aesthetics, covering color theory, swiss design, and some of the historical roots of modern design.

3. Research
De Stijl
- Also known as ‘Neo-plasticism’ or ‘plastic art’.
- ‘De Stijl’ is Dutch for the word ‘style’
- Founded in 1917 by two pioneers of abstract art: Piet Mondrian and Theo van Doesburg.
- Promoted a style of art based on a strict geometry of horizontals and verticals.
- Mostly created using black and white or primary colours.
- A group was formed with the artists and architects: Theo van Doesburg, Piet Mondrian,
Bart van der Leck, Gerrit Rietveld, Robert van’t Hoff and J.J.P. Oud being their core
members.
- A journal was created by the same name in which Theo Van Doesburg would publish the
group’s theories
- "All painting – the painting of the past as well as of the present – shows us that its
essential plastic means were only line and colour.“ – Piet Mondrian
- “…nothing is more concrete, more real than a line, a colour, a surface.” – Theo van
Doesburg
- “Vertical and horizontal lines are the expression of two opposing forces; they exist
everywhere and dominate everything…” – Piet Mondrian

4. Poster Ideas
Idea 1:
Stained glass with the
words “De Stijl” shown as
if they are behind the
glass.
Idea 2:
Different shapes with
the details of the
exhibition fitting
according to the design.
Idea 3:
- Simple shapes forming
an art display/ exhibition
- The details of the
exhibition will be written
within the design.

8. Evaluation
Main Strengths:
1) The poster follows the style of ‘De Stijl’ as it uses geometry and lines which
are the fundamentals of the art style. This will show the viewer that the exhibit
is centred around this type of art.
2) The colours compliment each other and suit the art style. De Stijl often uses
primary colours and black and white so we made sure to include them on the
poster. The black and white contrasts with the red, yellow and blue which
makes the colours stand out even more.
3) The information and title are clear and not confusing to read. Though at a
tilt, we made sure the text is still readable by angling it well.
9. Evaluation
Improvement:
1) To further improve the poster I would create my own background instead of
using one we found online. Though we changed the rotation of it to make it
look different, creating our own would further help in having our design be
completely how we envisioned it.
2) Next time, I would also use a more interesting font and as the one we are
using is quite basic and doesn’t stand out.
3) Lastly, I would use more colour to make it even more eye-catching. Meaning,
it would attract more people to come view the exhibition.
10. Problem- Solving
1) The first problem we encountered was searching for a clear and high-quality
background. Many of the art we were finding online were real life pictures,
however, we wanted a print or a design that was created digitally. We
eventually found a good resolution image.
2) Another problem we had was how we were going to rotate the background.
We didn’t want horizontal lines as we thought it would be uninteresting to look
at however we also had to keep in mind if the text would be readable. We
ended up settling on the diagonal lines with the text tilting to the left as we
believe it made it more clear and stand out more.
3) Lastly, we had to plan a creative name that suited De Stijl and would be
fitting for an art gallery viewing. We were struggling to find a title until we
realised the art style involved shapes so we looked up synonyms for different
words such as ‘square’ and eventually settled on ‘Aspect’.

• Choose three aspects of your production where you worked well with
your team and this benefited the project

14. Task 4 – Evaluation - Feedback
• Discuss the feedback you received from your tutor during the project
and how you used this to improve the project
