This document outlines instructions for creating contact sheets in Photoshop and selecting images for editing from a photography project. Download the your folder as a zip file to your DOWNLOADS folder
Unzip (extract) the file
Head to Adobe Photoshop
File > Automate > Contact Sheet II
25cm x 19cm (72 Resolution) – 5 columns and 5 rows
Ensure filename as caption is ticked
Print screen or use the snipping tool to screenshot and place each contact
sheet tab into this pro-forma.
After you have taken contact sheets, don’t worry about having access to all of
your images. Begin selecting your top 10-15 images to begin editing. Delete
this dialogue box when you have followed these instructions.

What editing techniques have you carried out and why?
In this image I have used photo montaging which I am going to use throughout my project. I used the quick selection tool
to select the buildings and trees in the image created a new layer to be played in front of the minster. After quick
selecting the minster and deleting the background, I placed this behind the skyline that I added a black and white effect
over. To finish off the image I took down the opacity of the minster and painted in some faint brush strokes to give the
impression there are clouds in front of the minster and that it is towards the back of the image.

What editing techniques have you carried out and why?
This photo montage image I have used three different photos of York minster. In each photo I have taken the original and
change the colour. On one photo I have added a black and white overlay, on the middle image I have lowered the
saturation and on the third image I have increased the saturation. After this I have changed the levels of each image to
emphasise the shadows and highlights before arranging them to look abstract.

In this image I have done something similar to the previous image however I wanted a fully black and white image. In this
image I have three separate buildings, on each one I have added a black and white overlay and used levels to bring out
the shadows and highlights. To create the image I used the quick selection tool around each building before adding them
together.

In this image I wanted to include both
black and white and colour. To make
the image more interesting I used the
quick selection tool to remove the
background and add in a black and
white image of a pretty street. After I
used the dodge and burn tools to
emphasise dark and light within the
alley way as well as increasing the
saturation.

In this image I have used photo montage to create the illusion that buildings are peering through the windows. However
the buildings are places to look distorted. I have used the quick selection tool to remove the background from the
windows and added in the building that have a black and white overlay.

In this image I wanted to experiments with leading line. I used photo montage to create parallel lines between two
different skylines. In this image I used the quick selection tool to select both skylines and impose them together. Finally I
added a black and white overlay onto each image and took the saturation up for the background.

What editing techniques have you carried out and why?
I have experimented with replacing the background in this image. Because this image is black and white I needed to use
levels and the burn and dodge tool to create depth in the image. I replaced the sky using the quick selection tool, I did
this because the original sky was simply white, changing the sky adds more depth in the tones in the image and makes
the image nicer to look at.

What editing techniques have you carried
out and why?
This image is also black and white however
I wanted to add something different to
develop the image. To do this I took the
quick selection tool and selected the
double yellow lines on the side of the road.
Once selected I made a new layer from the
black and white image and I increased the
saturation to make them bright and almost
neon.

• Discuss elements of visual language that refer to the composition and image construction
Using photo montage in my images allowed me to incorporate different images into one
image. Doing this means I can position images where I want them. When looking at
composition my images are unique in the way I have used different buildings and landscapes
to create an abstract theme. For example my Image #6 I have flipped an image of a building
upside down and edited it onto another image. Therefore there is a parallel line of two
different buildings. This creates an abstract effect as it can be looked at both ways up and it
has a clear composition and smooth structure which is pleasing to the eye. I have also created
images that have several different buildings all facing different directions. For example my
Image #3 shows this. In this image I have taken one original image and used black and white
and other tools such as the dodge and burn tool before taking two other images of different
buildings and inserting them behind one another to create not only an interesting
composition of different angles but also a realistic depth of field despite my images looking
unrealistic.

36. Evaluation - Audience
You should discuss;
• Does your project meet the identified audience in the proposal document?
My original target audience was male and females within the 18-25 age range. I feel my images are suitable for not only
this age range but for much more ages as well. My images are nothing but abstract image. There is nothing inappropriate
for younger viewers and nothing that elderly viewers might not recognise. My images are simply to be enjoyed by all.
• What social groups and genders should view this work?
There are no specific genders or social groups that can and cannot view my work. My work is made to be viewed by all.
There is nothing in my work that could possibly offend any specific race or religion and there is nothing in my work that
would be more appealing to a specific gender.
Peer Review
In the 8th image I like the use of monochrome with the contrast between the yellow road lines, as well as this I like the
use of duplication of architecture in the 6th image as this create a surreal environment, and the continues style in the 5th
image also. I like the experimental style in and surreal style which has come across in your photos. The sky replacements
also look good although you could experiment with different environmental styles.

37. Evaluation - Context
You should discuss;
• What previous work has influenced your project? (past and present photographers?)
I did a lot of research on past and present photographers however I did not follow the same exact path as any of the
artists I researched. I wanted to go in my own direction of photo montage and abstract themes. The research I did
however did influence me to focus on street and architectural photography.
• Has it been influenced by race, religion or politics?
My work is not influenced by any race, religion or politics. My images are simply made for everyone to view.
• Do the contexts identified in the proposal meet your finished project? (Do you feel that your images
are near-professional enough to be sold or promoted?)
I feel that my images of a professional standard. My project has a theme that clearly flows from one image to another
with the use of certain techniques I have used, specifically photo montage and the use of either black and white or
increase in saturation. My images all link to one another with the themes and ideas I originally proposed. I feel that if my
images were to be sold they would be successful in something like a small gallery or a coffee table photography book.
This is because my images are simple.
My images do reflect my original idea, however you can see that my final idea has developed when I was out shooting.
When I was out shooting I realised that shooting buildings at different angles rather than street life was more interesting
for me and my project went from street photography to architectural photography.

38. Evaluation
On this page, you should identify;
• Have you achieved what you aimed to do with your images? If so, how? If not, why?
I feel I achieved what I aimed to do as I used photo montage effectively in each image, however in each image I used a
very similar process. If I were to do this again I would perhaps change what techniques I used in each image along side
photo montage to make my images more different each time.
• Are the images fit for purpose? Could they be entered into a competition?
My images are all very similar in both appearance and what techniques were used, however my images can be fit into
many different categories e.g. black and white, photo montage, street photography, architectural photography etc.
Therefore my images would work in a competition.
• Have you received negative or positive feedback? Give examples and be critical regarding any further changes that
may be necessary.
I received both positive and negative feedback for my work. I was told the use of black and white contrasting with colour
in some of my images worked well and created contradiction however I was also told that despite my sky replacements
were successful, I could have experimented with different environmental styles to make my images more interesting.
• Consider the technical qualities of the images – How well has exposure, depth of field and post-production been
controlled?
The exposure in my images was controlled depending on the ambient light on the day of the shoot, I would make sure the
light and shadows within the image were well balanced so minimal post production would need to be carried out on that
behalf.
• Consider the visual impact of the images – How artistic? Are they black and white or colour? Justify your rationale
behind your choices.
My images are predominantly black and white, however I have colour in some of my images. To add artistic flare I have
incorporated both colour and black and white into some of my images. My images all also have photo montage
incorporated whether that is a basic sky replacement or an abstract composition of buildings.

39. Evaluation
Finally you should critically discuss;
• What skills and knowledge have you gained from the photography project?
• I have gained a lot of skills in Photoshop, I have not only had the opportunity to learn how to use a lot of techniques
but I have also had the opportunity to experiment with a lot of techniques. I have also learnt how to read images and
identify different aspects of the image and to be able to apply specific terminology to what techniques are used.
• What can you do now that you could not? Is there anything else you need to learn about?
• Now I can change settings on the camera (ISO, Shutter speed, White Balance etc.) knowing what the image is going
to come out like. Also I can now manipulate images on Photoshop without assistance therefore can crate a successful
final image easier and faster than before.
• Do you feel that you managed your time on the project well?
• I feel that I may have spent too much time sorting my images and selecting the best images for pre production as this
resulted in my actual production time having to be cut short which effected the amount of time I had to complete
other tasks in the project. However I managed to complete all my work including editing 8 final images.
