MUSIC VIDEOS
• Feature the artist(s). – As can be seen in Jack Garratt’s music video for
‘Worry’ where he performs. On the other hand, in Olivver the Kid’s music
video for ‘Keep it Scared’, he is seen acting as opposed to performing.
• Feature an actor/actress. – As in Olivver the Kid’s ‘Bbblue’, an actress is
used as the love interest in the video.
• Tell a story. – As in Pixel Fix’s ‘I Want You the Same’, where actors are used
to tell a story that is different to that of the song but is still related.
• Related to the lyrics of the song. – As in Two Door Cinema Club’s ‘Are We
Ready? (Wreck)’, where the members of the bad are seen advertising
imaginary products mentioned in the song.
• Cutting matched to rhythm. - As in Two Door Cinema Club’s ‘Undercover
Martyn’, the cutting is aesthetically pleasing as it does not clash with the
songs electronic rhythms.
• Artist performing the song in studio or on stage. – As in Skizzy Mars’ ‘I’m
Ready’, where the featured singer is seen recording the hook in a studio.
MUSIC VIDEO
• I will contrast parts of my music video by juxtaposing a storyline played out by the artist with
footage of the artist performing the song. The story will match the emotions of the song but will not
match the lyrics word for word to avoid an amateur-looking video. It will focus on the artist as the
main protagonist to act as an extension to them conveying their thoughts through the song. In the
performance footage, they will perform the song with relevant and realistic emotions to give an
authentic view to the audience.
• The editing of the video will match the rhythm of the song to tie the two pieces together,
complimenting one another.
• The artists I have shortlisted pride themselves on using meaningful and honest lyrics that an
audience can relate to, this means that the music video can include realistic, natural situations that
the audience can identify with.
• The actors/artists in the music video will be aged between 17 and 25 to conform with the targeted
audience for the music I have chosen, this means it will be easier for the audience to identify with the
people in the music video.
• The music video will be filmed in a darker, suburban setting at dusk to reinforce the darker tones of
the music I have chosen, this will be a contrast to the footage of the artist performing the song on
stage or in a studio.
• The people featured in the music video will be wearing modern, popular brands that are
commonplace in the target audience’s life; this includes H&M, ASOS and Forever 21 (appealing to
audiences in the US).
• The colours in the music video will be a darker pallet contrasted with a brighter colour, drawing the
viewers focus to that contradictory colour. This creates synergy with the CD cover and magazine
article that follow similar themes.

CD ARTWORK
• Black background with brighter colour design. – Two Door Cinema Club’s
‘Gameshow’ has a photo of three neon lights that stand out against the
contrasting dark background, this draws a potential customer’s eyes to it.
• Photo/portrait of artist. – This is evident on both Jack Garratt’s ’Phase’ and
Olivver the Kid’s ‘Freak’, this gives the music an identity by showing the
listener who the artist is, but leaving their personality hidden in the music.
• Black and White/Filter – The Neighbourhood’s ’I Love You’ uses a greyscale
filter that describes their music visually. The band are known for their black
and white aesthetic that actually affects the music on the album.
• Artist’s name – Two Door Cinema Club’s ‘Tourist History’ draws attention to
the band’s name rather than that of the album, this shows that they feel it is
more important to expose your identity as an artist and also showcase their
unusual name.
DESIGNS
• Use pre-production techniques/post-production filters – E.g.
smoke/dry ice, lights. E.g. Foals’ ‘Total Life Forever’.
• Symbols. E.g. ’I Love You’ by The Neighbourhood.
• Parental Advisory (where relevant). E.g. ‘I Love You’ by The
Neighbourhood.
• Album name and/or artist name. E.g. Nothing But Thieves’ self-titled
album.
• Image of the artist or a model. E.g. ‘Vagabonds’ by Satellite Stories.
I will use black as the background, acting as a
blank canvas that contrast the bright blue and
pink. These colours will be in the form of neon-
like lights in a spiral shape. This contrast
represents ‘the light at the end of the tunnel, ‘light
in dark’ idea.
