Example Treatment for a Music Video
Outline of ideas
My music video is a mixture of both performance and narrative. The video is not based around a narrative
but it is clear that there is one. The video will open with our main actor who is representing the artist, and
it is ‘the morning after’ we will use an establishing shot to present the state of her house after she has
thrown a party. The narrative will be based on her memory of the night before. As the song is building up
to the chorus our artist is walking through her house and looking around at the damage from the night
before. As she is walking the radio is playing and it is ‘Domino’- by Jessie J, this song reminds her of the
party last night and we see her flashback to last night’s party, where most of the performance takes place.
I will use a variety of shots, in my video, mainly when the artist is performing, in order to keep the video
entertaining. For example I will use close ups to show off the artists make up, and medium and long shots
to show off the artists clothing, as this is a convention of pop music videos.
As the song progresses to the later chorus’ the party will become more intense and strong as the house
gets more crowded. I will use low angle shots in order to represent the intensity of the people and the
party.
The lighting will initially be light as she wakes up in the morning, to emphasise the difference between the
atmospheres, when the cut changes to the dark party scene. The party scene will have dark lighting, but
to follow the conventions the characters will all have bright clothes, make up and accessories.
As the song reaches the bridge, we will have the artist performing in her garden, singing the bridge to the
camera. The only focus would be the artist and when the bridge finishes I will cut back to the party scene
where the artist will continue to perform for the last few versions of the chorus.
As the song finishes, the cut will come back to reality, which will be emphasised with bright lighting and a
messy house, which will conclude the performance side of the video and finish the rest of the narrative.
The artist will perform throughout the party scenes, while there are other visual conventions, such as
glitter, glow sticks and plastic cups.

Justification for my ideas
There a number of reasons for choosing this concept. My group and I underwent a lot of research in order
to determine what our target audience wanted to see in our music video.49% of those who took our
audience questionnaire said they would like to see us remake ‘Domino’. Also the majority of our audience
were aged 15-17. It is typical that around this age it would be more appealing to watch a
party/performance video as opposed to something more low key. Also when we asked our audience to
describe Jessie J in three words one common response we got, was fun and confident, so we need to
incorporate this image into our music video. The reason behind choosing to include narrative was that
70% of our target audience said they would prefer to see narrative in a music video so we set out to
create this. However in further research we discovered that performance is a key pop music video
convention. Also when we asked the audience what colour theme we should use, they suggested colours
such as pink, purple, gold and blue, which is why we have decided to have a bright vibrant colour theme
to contrast our lighting.
