GENRE RESEARCH
HIP HOP/RAP GENRE
RAP GENRE CONT.
The genre of rap focuses on the image , the album is usually focused on how rapper wants to
be portrayed or show some understanding how the artist is. Hip hop covers usually use black
and grey effect or even dull colours for the background to allow the rapper to stand out as this
genre is usually about flaunting with expensive accessories or them bragging with the latest
brands/trends. This is more shown through artists such 50 cent who uses his body to sell his
album as he’s muscular which is a stereotype that men should be strong, he also wears a big
chain which shows that he’s flaunting. Hip hop covers usually have the artist presented on it
as its about ‘image’ , they are usually looking at the camera with a straight face to reinforce
the arrogance and to promote their album. Likewise artists such as Drake , 2pac and rick ross
use this. Hip hop album covers usually consist of the artist name and album name
However some hip hop artists subvert this by not following the conventions of the genre .
Artists such as notorious big who is not featured in his album cover ‘ready to die’ , J Cole who
uses bright location and Tyler the great who doesn’t feature his name nor the name of the
album on the album cover.
REGGAE
REGGAE
• Reggae covers and hip hop covers are similar as the artist is present on the cover
however in the reggae covers the artist are much happier. Reggae covers usually consist
with the colours which represents Rastafarians ; Red, yellow and green. This is because
reggae is usually made by Rastafarians and to used to express their culture. These
colours can be mixed throughout the cover or on one particular object on the album cover.
They also have the artist name and the name of the album.
JAZZ
JAZZ
• Jazz covers are mainly based on the concept of music , they usually have someone
playing instrument such as a saxophone as this is the main instrument in the genre of jazz
and jazz is heavily based on instruments than lyrics. Jazz covers are creative as from
researching and looking at images they use cartoon effects to represent the artist or use
drawings making it look like a book cover as jazz doesn’t consist with lyrics so the covers
are implying the music itself is telling a story.
