Indirect Speech
 In this lesson, we will learn how to use indirect speech in
Hebrew.
Indirect Speech
 Indirect speech is used when the speaker is expressing an
idea that someone said or paraphrasing a literary work. It is
not directly quoted from the speaker or source. For
example:
 I said “I am going to the restaurant.” - Direct Speech
 He said that he is going to the restaurant – Indirect Speech
Notice how the construction used for indirect speech uses the
past tense to introduce the event indicating that the speaker
said the words in the past. Even though the speaker was
speaking of an event that occurs at the present. Also note that
the two pronouns may be the same or different depending on
the context. Let’s look at some examples.
Indirect Speech
 I said that he should take a cab.
 We said that you should eat with us.
 Hebrew fortunately almost directly translates from the
English construction. Hebrew uses the conjunction ‫ש‬ to
combine the two phrases of these sentences.
 ‫תפוחים‬ ‫אוכלים‬ ‫שאנחנו‬ ‫אמרו‬ (remember the pronoun is not
necessary in the past tense)
 They said that we are eating apples
 ‫ללכת‬ ‫רוצה‬ ‫שהיא‬ ‫אמרה‬ ‫היא‬
 She said that she wants to walk
Indirect Speech
 When using indirect speech with questions, the rules are a
little different. ‫ש‬ is not used in these constructions.
 If a question word is present in the sentence, no connecting
word such as ‫ש‬ is used:
 ”‫אתה‬ ‫"מאיפה‬ ‫אומרים‬ ‫אנחנו‬ We say “Where are you?” (direct
speech)
 ‫אתה‬ ‫מאיפה‬ ‫אומרים‬ ‫אנחנו‬ We say where are you? (indirect
speech)
 However, if a question word is not present, the word ‫אם‬ is
added before the indirect speech which can be translated to
the word “if” in English.
 "‫ללכת‬ ‫רוצה‬ ‫“אתה‬ ‫אותו‬ ‫שאלתי‬ I asked him “Do you want to go.”
 ‫ללכת‬ ‫רוצה‬ ‫הוא‬ ‫אם‬ ‫אותו‬ ‫שאלתי‬ I asked him if he wants to go.
