IGOROT IS THE GENERIC AND COLLECTIVE TERM FOR THE INDIGENOUS
PEOPLES OF THE CORDILLERA MOUNTAIN RANGE IN NORTHERN LUZON.
IGOROT IS DERIVED FROM THE PREFIX I- (PEOPLE FROM) AND GOLOT
(MOUNTAIN)
TO LITERALLY MEAN “PEOPLE FROM THE MOUNTAINS.”
THEY CURRENTLY TOTAL ABOUT 99% OR 1.5 MILLION IN POPULATION AND
ARE COMPOSED OF VARIOUS ETHNIC GROUPS AND SUBGROUPS OR TRIBES.
IT COMPOSED OF KANKANAEY, BONTOC, IFUGAO, KALINGA, IBALOY, ISNEG
AND TINGGUIAN.
9. CULTURAL ELEMENTS COMMON TO THE IGOROT
PEOPLES AS A WHOLE INCLUDE METALWORKING IN
IRON AND BRASS, WEAVING, AND ANIMAL SACRIFICE.
THEY BELIEVE IN SPIRITS, INCLUDING THOSE OF
ANCESTORS, AND HAVE COMPLEX RITUALS TO
PROPITIATE THEM.

LUMAD IS A GENERIC TERM USED BY OTHERS
TO REFER TO THE INDIGENOUS PEOPLES OF
MINDANAO, THE LARGEST NUMBER OF
INDIGENOUS PEOPLES IN THE COUNTRY. IT IS A
VISAYAN TERM MEANING NATIVE, INDIGENOUS,
OR “OF THE LAND”. THE TERM LUMAD WAS
REFER TO THE NON-CHRISTIAN AND NON-
MUSLIM INDIGENOUS PEOPLES OF MINDANAO.
THE 18 LUMAD ETHNOLINGUISTIC TRIBES ARE
THE ATA MANOBO, BAGOBO, BANWAON,
B’LAAN, BUKIDNON, DIBABAWON, HIGAONON,
MAMANWA, MANDAYA, MANGGUWANGAN,
MANOBO, MANSAKA, MATIGSALOG, SUBANEN,
TAGAKAOLO, T’BOLI, TEDUARY AND UBO.
12. TRADITIONAL CLOTHING

LUMADS BELIEVE THAT THE MOUNTAIN IS
SACRED. THEY ALSO BELIEVE THAT DEATH AND
ILLNESS OR BAD FAITH ARE GOD'S WAY OF
SHOWING ANGER. THE OFFERING OF LIVE
ANIMALS SUCH AS PIGS AND CHICKEN ARE
COMMON DURING TRIBAL CEREMONIES FOR
THEM TO HAVE A GOOD HARVEST, HEALTH AND
PROTECTION, AND THANKSGIVING.
13. 3. MANGYAN
Mangyan is a generic term for the indigenous peoples of the
island of Mindoro and in Sibuyan island. The word Mangyan
generally means man, woman or person without any reference
to any nationality. There are eight recognized groups: Iraya,
Alangan, Tadyawan, Tawbuid, Bangon, Buhid, Hanunuo, and
Ratagnon.Mangyan are mainly subsistence agriculturalists,
planting a variety of sweet potato, upland (dry cultivation) rice,
and taro. They also trap small animals and wild pig. The
Mangyan have a rich literary tradition with a long history.

14. 4. NEGRITO
Negrito is the collective term to refer to
the Filipino Indigenous peoples with a
hunter-gatherer background, including
the Agta, Aeta, Ati, Ata and Batak
people.
Negritos have dark skin, kinky
“peppercorn” hair and little body hair
and are small in size. They still live by
hunting and gathering, trading wild
meat and forest products to the Filipino
farmers around them in exchange for
rice or corn.
