INDIE MUSIC
The term ‘indie music’ derives from ‘independent music’, as music
produced independently from major commercial record labels.
Indie music as a genre is, although difficult to define, heavily influenced
by folk, electronic and rock music.
HISTORY
the mid-1980s, the term "indie" began to be used to describe the music
produced on post-punk labels, and in the 1980’s, prominent indie
rock labels were founded.
The phrase "indie rock" then became associated with artists and genres
that remained faithful to being independent.
By late 1990s, indie rock developed into having subgenres and related
genres such as indie pop.
Notable artists of the genre include The Smiths and the Arctic Monkeys.
MUSIC CHARACTERISTICS

• DIY production ethic
• Approaches incongruous to mainstream music trends
AUDIENCE
Like pop, the indie genre has a wide, general audience yet often
appeals to younger people.

pop.
