W

ater is the nectar of life. Can its importance in our
life ever be undermined? But it is a matter of
concern that this natural resource is depleting
fast...and the point is that water cannot be created nor
destroyed. We can find alternate sources of fuel but we
cannot find another source for water.
Anticipating the need to conserve water, DLF Foundation has
taken up the onus of construction of over 45 Rain Water
Harvesting (RWH) units in the Millennium city, Gurgaon. It is
felt that installation of these units will aid in replenishing the
depleting water levels in Gurgaon and also thwart flooding of
the roads and low lying areas which causes tremendous
inconvenience to the public in general.
Besides, an interesting and informative seminar on Water
Management in Gurgaon was successfully conducted at
Haryana Institute of Public Administration (HIPA), Gurgaon.
The audience were enriched with the various facts and
measures taken by the administrative bodies to tackle water
crisis in Gurgaon.

perfectly landscaped green cover adds beauty to every surrounding and the DLF Horticulture Department strives to
ensure that Gurgaon city is soothing to the eye and healthy for the lungs. A tree plantation drive was initiated by the
department during the monsoon. The plantation drive
was undertaken by residents and representatives of RWAs of
DLF CIty. Headed by a manager, two supervisors, three officers
and about 150 gardeners, DLF is well equipped with a dedicated
work force as well as an infrastructure that has eight tractor
tankers, lawn mower trolleys and mechanized augers for
digging.
The department has a nursery spread over 1.5 acres in Phase II
which serves four phases in addition to another in DLF Golf
Course for Phase V.
The Horticulture Department boasts of 88 parks spread
over 70 acres, incidental greens over 30 acres and a green belt of
over 40 acres in addition to 120 km of road side tree plantation.

DLF Foundation Replenishes Depleting Water Levels in Gurgaon
45 Rain Water Harvesting Units under construction

D

LF Foundation has started construction of over 45
Rain Water Harvesting (RWH) units in the
Millennium city, Gurgaon. It is felt that installation of
these units will aid in replenishing the depleting water levels
in Gurgaon and also thwart flooding of the roads and low lying
areas which causes tremendous inconvenience to the public
in general.
Talking on the initiative, Lt Gen Rajender Singh, CEO, DLF
Foundation said, “DLF Foundation in partnership with SURGE
has initiated this project and has already completed
construction of six Water Harvesting Units in DLF City Phase III
so far. We are working on a target to complete the remaining
39 units over the next 6 -7 months from now”.
The construction of one Water Harvesting Unit takes 8 -10
days and two teams have been assigned to set up three units
each per month. All these harvesting structures would come
up in DLF Cities Phase I to Phase V. The maintenance charge of
cleaning the Units will be borne by the Foundation for a
period of three years; thereafter the responsibility of

maintenance will be the mandate of RWA.
The construction of these Water Harvesting Units will entail
prevention of water logging and recharge of ground water so
that the water table rises. There has been no talk of the rate of
groundwater abstraction in Gurgaon, until recently, which is
reportedly more than thrice the quantum replenished by
rains.
According to a recent study released by CSE, there is no
reliable data on the quantum of groundwater abstracted. In
2011, Gurgaon with over 30,000 tubewells, recorded
extracting 70-230 million litres of water in a day. Going by
this rate of extraction, the water table will decline by 1.2
metre every year. As per official estimates, in 2021, the
NCR township with a projected population of 3.7 million will
have a water demand of 666 MGD per day. Hence, it is
important that the ground water is replenished by all relevant
stakeholders like developers, RWAs and the government,
while alternative sources of water is being worked out by
HUDA.

VILLAGE CLUSTER DEVELOPMENT

DLF Cluster Development Programme
Integrated development of rural areas in Gurgaon

D

LF Foundation is actively engaged in developing
cluster of villages in rural Gurgaon. Under this
programme, a series of Primary Health Centers in
rural Haryana have been established to act as nodal point of
intervention. These centers provide free medical consultancy,
specialist treatment, free diagnostics and subsidized
medicines to a large rural community. Linkages have been
established for secondary and tertiary care. Apart from
provision of palliative and curative care, the emphasis

remains on the preventive and promotive health care. In the
recent past, two months alone, more than 1700 patients
received care at these centers.
In line with organisation's commitment to 'Health for All' , DLF
Foundation organised awareness programmes on nutrition,
hygiene and cleanliness in schools and Anganwadi centers in
four villages of rural Gurgaon. Interactive sessions with
students and teachers were conducted by health experts and
queries were addressed. In addition, a comprehensive school
health checkup was also conducted by medical officers of
respective PHC. More than 1500 school students underwent

health screening and in the process preventive, curative and
promotive services were offered.
Besides, DLF Foundation is also focusing on forming the
Village Development Committee (VDC), which would
comprise of three sub-committees: the Village Youth Council
(VYC), the Village Council of Elders (VCE), and the Village
Health Committee (VHC). The VDCs, in turn, will take a lead
role in the process of continuing to understand and respond to
the needs of their community.

In wake to arrival of Monsoon, lot of water logging is
happening in the villages, which is haven for mosquito
breeding and subsequent spread of vector borne diseases.
Anti-larval sprays and fumigation was also being done to avoid
this menace.

T

he enthusiasm and eagerness on the smiling faces of
the students when the DLF- Swapna Sarthak School,
Nathupur resumed on 9th July 2012 was heartening. In
the first two weeks, earnest studies were carried out to get
the children into the groove after a long summer break. In the
last week of July, the children were engaged in making rakhis
and a special assembly was conducted on the significance of
rakhi and Janamastmi. Students of class 1st and 2nd had
hands on experience in planting saplings. They were given the
responsibility of nurturing the plants and watch them grow.
Besides, students were involved in various activities as a part

of Independence Day celebrations. Kites, doves, flags and the
wheel were made in the theme of the colours of the national
flag. The children learnt about the significance of the flag and
about freedom fighters. The highlight of the function was an
inspiring skit by students of class 3 on the childhood of Lal
Bahadur Shastri. Patriotic songs and poems were rendered by
the students of nursery, KG, 1st and 2nd.
The function culminated with the national anthem sung by
the students. The aim of the Swapna Sarthak School is not
only to impart literacy and education but also to inculcate
pride in the cultural heritage of our country.

But it is a matter of concern that this natural resource is depleting fast...and the point is that water cannot be created nor destroyed. We can find alternate sources of fuel but we cannot find another source for water. Anticipating the need to conserve water, DLF Foundation has taken up the onus of construction of over 45 Rain Water Harvesting (RWH) units in the Millennium city, Gurgaon. It is felt that installation of these units will aid in replenishing the depleting water levels in Gurgaon and also thwart flooding of the roads and low lying areas which causes tremendous inconvenience to the public in general. Besides, an interesting and informative seminar on Water Management in Gurgaon was successfully conducted at Haryana Institute of Public Administration (HIPA), Gurgaon. The audience were enriched with the various facts and measures taken by the administrative bodies to tackle water crisis in Gurgaon. • 3. COVER STORY DLF Foundation Replenishes Depleting Water Levels in Gurgaon 45 Rain Water Harvesting Units under construction D LF Foundation has started construction of over 45 Rain Water Harvesting (RWH) units in the Millennium city, Gurgaon. It is felt that installation of these units will aid in replenishing the depleting water levels in Gurgaon and also thwart flooding of the roads and low lying areas which causes tremendous inconvenience to the public in general. Talking on the initiative, Lt Gen Rajender Singh, CEO, DLF Foundation said, “DLF Foundation in partnership with SURGE has initiated this project and has already completed construction of six Water Harvesting Units in DLF City Phase III so far. We are working on a target to complete the remaining 39 units over the next 6 -7 months from now”. The construction of one Water Harvesting Unit takes 8 -10 days and two teams have been assigned to set up three units each per month. All these harvesting structures would come up in DLF Cities Phase I to Phase V. The maintenance charge of cleaning the Units will be borne by the Foundation for a period of three years; thereafter the responsibility of maintenance will be the mandate of RWA. The construction of these Water Harvesting Units will entail prevention of water logging and recharge of ground water so that the water table rises. There has been no talk of the rate of groundwater abstraction in Gurgaon, until recently, which is reportedly more than thrice the quantum replenished by rains. According to a recent study released by CSE, there is no reliable data on the quantum of groundwater abstracted. In 2011, Gurgaon with over 30,000 tubewells, recorded extracting 70-230 million litres of water in a day. Going by this rate of extraction, the water table will decline by 1.2 metre every year. As per official estimates, in 2021, the NCR township with a projected population of 3.7 million will have a water demand of 666 MGD per day. Hence, it is important that the ground water is replenished by all relevant stakeholders like developers, RWAs and the government, while alternative sources of water is being worked out by HUDA.
