Our media products used many conventions of real bands. Our poster design was similar to album covers we researched, using the same font as Two Door Cinema Club. The poster also included the band's website. Our music video featured the band playing instruments, as in other indie videos. Some shots used a bloom effect. While most indie videos focus on the band, ours specifically featured the lead singer. Our album packaging followed conventions like splitting song titles across two discs. However, our music video challenged conventions by lacking a narrative, unlike most of Two Door Cinema Club's videos, though keeping with the genre's simpler, homemade style.
1. In what ways does your media product use,
develop or challenge forms and conventions
of real media products
2. How do my media products use codes and conventions
our poster followed many conventions that were shown
in our research of existing products. We chose to
continue to use the convention of using the album cover
on the poster and in the end decided to keep with a
simpler very open poster design rather then a cluttered
one. We also kept using the same font that two door
cinema club use in their own media products as it is
seen to the audience as there own unique font that is
easily related to the band. We also continued the
convention of our poster including the website on the
poster as the audience frequently uses the internet and
social networking sights meaning it was highly
necessary that we keep with this convention. Overall
our poster largely stuck to codes and conventions being
similar to the design of many other bands we
researched likely the Maccabees and containing a
similar amount of information.
3. How do my media products use codes and conventions
The mise en scene shows that the band has an urban image by having the photo taken in a car park we saw several
other indie bands doing this in our research. Our costumes were largely standard clothes as indie bands never use
anything out of the ordinary in terms of costume so we stuck to this code and convention.
Often albums and Digi-paks created
by Indie/ Alternative bands do not
include actual band members we
decided to challenge this
convention as it would help the
band stand out more for the
audience by being different we did
however keep with the convention
of not include the band members For our front and back
on the front of the album. cover we largely stuck
Our back cover followed conventions of a simple to conventions with a
design for a 2 disc album by splitting the song titles simple front cover with
on either side of the track number we saw this being the bands and albums
used on other albums we researched. name very clear. We
chose to use triangles
predominantly on the
front cover as it is often
associated with the
genre.
4. How do my media products use codes and conventions
in our music video we had many moments of the band playing their
instruments as it was a common convention in all the music videos we
analysed and researched such as shuffle and two door cinema clubs own
songs. In some shots we also used a bloom effect such as in this screen shot
as it gave a light glow to go with the light nature of the song.
We also continued the convention of the Indie genre of having focus on all
the band members but also having a specific focus and the lead singer as
we also found this as a common convention in many of the music videos
we researched in the genre this is because the lead singer will also be
playing an instrument and is seen to be doing more.
This is a shot we used in the music video which is similar to shot used in
two door cinema clubs music video something good can work. This
helps our video echo TDCCs other videos and use their codes and
conventions.
5. How do my media products use codes and conventions
Our Music video however does not have a narrative. We did this as the
music videos we researched from the indie genre had a mix of using
narratives and others that were a lot more random such as shuffle by
Bombay Bicycle Club which also was showing the band messing around
and having fun as well as mixing in the band singing and performing with
their instruments.
Shuffle
There is no narrative in our video which challenges Todorov theory that
there must always be an equilibrium to be destroyed and replaced by a
new equilibrium. It also to an extent challenge the convention as most
indie band music videos will have a narrative but sometimes they don’t
and also sticks to the convention of indie bands not being ‘mainstream’
and so videos being simpler and having a home made feel to them.
The lack of narrative in our music video does challenge Two Door
Cinema Clubs usual style of music video which has a narrative however it
does keep with the overall genre conventions. Our video
