1. In what ways does your media
product use, develop or challenge
forms and conventions of real
media products?
By Faisa Mohamoud
2. Titles have a bug influence when it come to fitting film into a specific code and
convention , It was decided that we were going for a teen comedy . The typography
heavily reflects on the film it self . By just watching the first 10 seconds of our film
you can already tell that its trying to appeal to a teen audience . The pink in
“Game On “ shows that the film is not only for a teen audience but that it
specifically suited for a female genre , however the white gives a sense of purity
and it being for both boys and girls .
3. A convention of a teen comedy is to first show the location before dialogue is used
, this has been used in many teen comedies and this a reason why our film fits
into the codes and conventions of a teen comedy. Most comedies like LOL and
Easy A use a voice over dialogue to create and atmosphere, we used this in our
film in order to create a comedic atmosphere . The representation of a specific
location “Camden lock” is used to give the audience many perspectives and let
them question what they want to believe . This is commonly called a enigma code
, this is also used to not just show one perception of the film and that it can be
interpreted in the way the audience takes it in.
4. As music we used various types of acoustic
strings , in reference to the question , this
does not challenge codes and conventions
of a film as it fits in to what is expected
from a teen comedy . Strings are normally
used in teen comedy to give a happy , jolly
and airy atmosphere , this in order to
reassure the audience that they are
watching a teen comedy and it is child-
friendly . In this scene there is an overview
where the main acting will begin , this part
of the film still does not break conventions
of a teen comedy as the music perfectly
provides the atmosphere necessary .
Another film that also uses this
technique of a overview shot of
school , a voice over and string
music is famous teen comedy
“Easy A” . Both films use this
technique and fits into the
conventions of a teen comedy .
In contrast both films also
signifies nature and the
representation of nature is
shows a lot in the start of both
opening .
5. As a group we decided to use all the techniques of a teen comedy , this included the typical Good Vs Evil , in both opening , the
one from our film and the one from hit blockbuster “Easy A” there is the obvious representation of the “It girls “ which are
welcomed into society and are loved by many , there is also the portrayal of those who are not welcomes and disregarded in
society , this particular scene in both these film shows the vulnerability of these who do not always conform to society's view of
“normal and sociable “ .
As a group we did not completely y use conventions as a platform as we did highly challenge normal conventions of a teen
comedy in this film . The way we did this was using man Muslim characters in order to act , although the job of the actor was
still fulfilled we decided on showing how a Muslim actor can not only do the job of a normal actor but how they are perceived in
society e.g. particular actor is shown to be not liked .
6. We decided to use a freeze frame to further elaborate and challenge the
conventions and break what is considered “norm “ . Traditionally in a teen
comedy freeze frames are used however in situation where it is awkward or
an introduction , we have perfectly placed our film here which shows that
we have an overall understanding of what is necessary in our media film .
In order to make our film more comedic we used a slash noise when the
freeze frame is shown to use that there is emphasis on this particular
character .
7. To conclude i would say that our film does challenge the
codes and conventions and in fact breaks them . However
as a group we still showed how actors that are not
commonly used can full fill their purpose as an actor just
how a conventional teen comedy actor would be used . We
also presented a group of people who do not fit into the
norm of society this is mostly used in teen comedies as the
storyline shows people going on a journey and their end
goal .
