GENESIS OF AGRICULTURAL DEVELOPMENT
1866 – Famine commission
1869 – Manchester cotton supply association represented for a separate department of
agriculture
1871- Department of Revenue, Agricultural and Commerce (until 1879)
1889 – Dr.J.A.Vollyker laid the foundation for Agricultural research in India
1889 – Imperial Bacteriological Laboratory (now known as Indian Veterinary Research
Institute) at Mukteswar.
1892 – Appointment of Imperial Agricultural Chemist
1901 - Appointment of Imperial Mycologist
1903 - Appointment of Imperial Entomologist
1905 – Imperial Agricultural Research Institute at PUSA, Bihar
1919 – Government of India Act , Agriculture became a state subject
1928 – The Royal Commission on Agriculture in India.
1929 – The Imperial Council of Agricultural Research established as a registered
society.
1947 – ‘Grow More Food Campaign’.
1948 - The Imperial Council of Agricultural Research renamed as Indian council of
Agricultural Research.
1949 – The University Education Commission headed by ‘Dr.S.Radhakrishnan’
recommended the establishment of Rural Universities in India.
1954-55 and 1959-60 - Indo-American teams recommended setting up agricultural
universities in the states.
1960 – First agricultural University in Pant Nagar, Uttaranchal
2. 1973 – Agricultural Research Service (ARS) by Dr.M.S.Swaminathan and
consequently Agricultural Scientist Recruitment Board (ASRB).
1976 – National Commission on Farmers - Dr.M.S.Swaminathan
