The Mathematics of Social Network Analysis: Metrics for Academic Social NetworksEditor IJCATR
Social network analysis plays an important role in analyzing social relations and patterns of interaction among actors in a
social network. Such networks can be casual, like those on social media sites, or formal, like academic social networks. Each of these
networks is characterised by underlying data which defines various features of the network. Keeping in view the size and diversity of
these networks it may not be possible to dissect entire network with conventional means. Social network visualization can be used to
graphically represent these networks in a concise and easy to understand manner. Social network visualization tools rely heavily on
quantitative features to numerically define various attributes of the network. These features also referred to as social network metrics
used everyday mathematics as their foundations. In this paper we provide an overview of various social network analysis metrics that
are commonly used to analyse social networks. Explanation of these metrics and their relevance for academic social networks is also
outlined

The research proposes a conceptual model for designing a people-finding system in a learning environment. The system is intended to help learner in getting recommendation about suitable people who are interested on a similar topic and share common interest with the learner. We propose that by using the user-generated (text) content, social-bookmarking and social-tagging, driven by Web 2.0 paradigms, we can implicitly profile people and find people’s interests on a given topic. We also like to use their existing social connections as an evidence to select suitable people in recommending a learner.
Studying community structure has proven efficient in understanding social forms of interactions among people, quantitatively investigating some of the well-known social theories and providing useful recommendations to users in communities based on common interests.
Studying the community structure of Flight MH370 will help us finding patterns that emerge from that structure which can lead to demystify some of the many ambiguous aspects of that flight. The aim of this study is to analyze the mesoscopic and macroscopic features of that community using social network analysis.
Pajek, which is a program for social network analysis, is used to generate a series of social networks that represent the different network communities.

Abstract
This paper describes the emergence of Collaborative Knowledge Networks (CKNs), distributed communities taking advantage of the wide connectivity and the support of communication technologies, spanning beyond the organizational perimeter of companies on a global scale.
CKNs are made up of groups of self-motivated individuals, linked by the idea of something new and exciting, and by the common goal of
improving existing business practices, new products or services for which they see a real need. Their strength is related to their ability to activate
creative collaboration, knowledge sharing and social networking mechanisms, affecting positively individual capabilities and organizations’
performance.
We describe the case of a Global Consulting Community to highlight the cultural and structural aspects of this phenomenon. Our case study also
illustrates the composition of the CKN ecosystem, which are made up by a combination of Collaborative Innovation, Learning and Interest Networks.
Empirical evidence suggests physical proximity as a supporting success factor of such communities, depending on the capital and knowledge intensity of the target industry.

Laru, J. & Järvelä, S. (2008). Social patterns in mobile technology mediated ...Jari Laru
The aim of this study was to identify social patterns in mobile technology mediated collaboration among distributed members of the professional distance education community. Ten participants worked for twelve weeks designing a master’s programme in Information Sciences. The participants’ mobile technology usage activity and interview data were first analyzed to get an overview of the density and distribution of collaboration at individual and community levels. Secondly, the results of the social network analyses were interpreted to explore how different social network patterns of relationships affect online and offline interactions. Thirdly, qualitative descriptions of participant teamwork were analyzed to provide practical examples and explanations. Overall, the analyses revealed nonparticipative behaviour within the online community. The social network analysis revealed structural holes and sparse collaboration among participants in the offline community. It was found that due to their separated practices in the offline community, they did not have a need for mobile collaboration tools in their practices

The social network analysis (SNA), branch of complex systems can be used in the construction of multiagent
systems. This paper proposes a study of how social network analysis can assist in modeling multiagent
systems, while addressing similarities and differences between the two theories. We built a prototype
of multi-agent systems for resolution of tasks through the formation of teams of agents that are formed on
the basis of the social network established between agents. Agents make use of performance indicators to
assess when should change their social network to maximize the participation in teams.

2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin
http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024
Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.
Operation “Blue Star” is the only event in the history of Independent India where the state went into war with its own people. Even after about 40 years it is not clear if it was culmination of states anger over people of the region, a political game of power or start of dictatorial chapter in the democratic setup.
The people of Punjab felt alienated from main stream due to denial of their just demands during a long democratic struggle since independence. As it happen all over the word, it led to militant struggle with great loss of lives of military, police and civilian personnel. Killing of Indira Gandhi and massacre of innocent Sikhs in Delhi and other India cities was also associated with this movement.

2. Introduction
Online learning environments are often used in
University education as discussion spaces, to construct
knowledge, to negotiate meanings.
How to analyse
on-line asynchrony interactions?
There is a need for theories about interaction and
methods of analysis to understand the complexity of online interactions
3. Background
Pragmatics is an aspect of communication thanks to
which phonetics is shaped in meaning, and meaning is
shaped in social actions
Speech Action Theory (SAT) conceptualizes how
messages pragmatically act, as gestures, and then
effect on social activities (Austin, 1962; Searle,
1969)
Activity Theory (AT) highlights various levels of social
activity (Engeström, 1987; Leontiev, 1940)
4. Aims
Observe the dimensions of the Activity Theory
(AT) in an online learning environment:
•How the AT dimensions occur in a learning
forum?
•How they contribute to the construction of
meaning? Particular focus on interactions
between two dimensions: Subject dimension
and Object dimension.
5. Data
data: 72 messages posted in a discussion
forum in Synergeia (Ligorio & Veermans,
2005).
participants: 10 university students (7 males
and 3 female) participating to a blended
course
6. Inter-Actions Network Analysis
Step I : Discourse Analysis
Step II : Content Analysis to identify elements of the AT
a) Build the system of categories
b) Segment posts in unicategorial portions
c) Identify the relationships between elicitation of
segments
Step III : Social Network Analysis to identify the
structure of the discourse. Nodes of a network of
segments eliciting and elicited by segments
7. Network density= 0,10
Every functions of communication concurs to develop the
discussion. Some functions have a more central role in
generating concatenation of communicative actions.
Other functions, instead, are not at all connected.
8. Betweenness centrality defines the flow of actions passing
through a node. Modality of Interaction has the role of mediator
the inter-action. Community is also crucial in mediating the
concatenation between actions.
9. Conclusions
Messages posted on the forum are not simple
communication units. They contain a variety of
communicative actions.
• This study indicates:
which dimensions are more important in a
university blended context
offers some information to improve discussions
in e-learning environments.
