This chapter discusses the role of community formation in online learning processes. It evaluates how social software and computer-mediated communication can facilitate community building. An analysis was conducted of message postings from two online educator communities to identify discourse behaviors and participant roles. The roles included dominant participants who actively engaged, selective participants who only interacted when relevant, and less engaged "little brothers." The analysis showed how communities provided spaces for sociability, identity development, and knowledge sharing among participants and moderators. In conclusion, online communities can foster collaboration through discussion and sharing of ideas.
