Using Exam Analytics to Evaluate Student Use of Lecture Capture Recordings

Lecture capture has become increasingly popular in higher and professional education programs. At OSU-CHS, we have observed that students have become increasingly more comfortable and reliant upon using these products as study aids and at times, as a replacement for attending lecture based courses. However, we question whether this is this a sound pedagogical approach for students to learn material and succeed on assessments. Does the availability of content and student use of lecture capture add value to their learning experience? Using our computer-based assessment software, we have categorized our exam items to their corresponding lecture capture recording in order to explore a relationship between student views of recordings and their performance on course assessments. Consequently, this presentation explores the relationship between student use of lecture capture resource(s) and student performance on assessments. Throughout the presentation, participants will learn about our process, our findings, and our plans for maximizing curricular use of lecture capture to improve student outcomes.

As semesters come and go, new exams are created and used items are retired, never to be used again. While moving on to new exam items due to poor performing statistics or to ensure exam security are sound practices, these retired items can still positively impact student learning. Retired summative assessment items can serve new purposes as formative assessment items that engage students with course content while preparing them for course exams. This presentation addresses the process of using retired exam items in creative ways to develop formative assessments to increase student self-awareness of their content knowledge and improve student retention.

This document discusses the assessment practices of a 5th grade classroom teacher. The teacher uses both performance-based assessment and standards-based assessment. For performance-based assessment, students complete projects, presentations and other activities, which are evaluated using rubrics. For standards-based assessment, students take tests, quizzes and exams aligned to state standards to prepare for standardized tests. This action research project studied whether cooperative learning activities could increase knowledge retention in a high school foreign language class. Over 2.5 weeks, 35 students participated in different Kagan activities each class meeting. Data was collected through pre- and post-intervention surveys and tests on student enjoyment of and retention from activities. Survey results showed students enjoyed the Kagan activities more and felt they helped retention more than previous activities. Test scores increased overall from 81% to 85% average, with more As and fewer lower grades after the Kagan interventions. The conclusion was that cooperative learning activities did increase knowledge retention in this high school foreign language class.

Restructuring a Capstone Course Based on Longitudinal Assessment of Module Exams
ExamSoft was utilized for all therapeutic modules for a 2-year cohort of pharmacy students. Prior to the students final capstone module, a pretest was given to the students (n=154). The pretest concept for the capstone module had existed for 15 years. This is the first time the pretest was constructed from the cohort of exams for those students. Previous pretests were derived by faculty teaching in the modules. The current pretest was based on evidence from ExamSoft categories and performance reports that allowed module coordinators to select questions which demonstrated a weak knowledge base for the class. The average score on the pretest was a 32% compared to past years performance of 55 to 63% averages. This demonstrated that the college did not have a good plan to help students remediate in their areas of weakness. If the student passed the module, they moved on to the next module but did not master material. The capstone course coordinator then created a dynamic class schedule that immediately took this information into account in designing the 7 week module for spring semester. The capstone module faculty created review materials on Moodle with review quizzes on ExamSoft. Any student that had a red weakness area on their Strengths and Opportunities report was required to do the review material and quizzes for each area. Any student could take advantage of this opportunity as well. Student progress was tracked in ExamSoft and Moodle. Post-test results are pending an April 17th exam and will be available for this session. The results of this cohort has started discussion on how to remediate students sooner in the modules. In addition, the faculty continue to use the rationale sections of the exam to provide immediate feedback to students on exams. The use of ExamSoft categories as well as student reports has created an opportunity to dialogue with students and faculty to improve student outcomes.

Restructuring a Capstone Course Based on Longitudinal Assessment of Module Exams
ExamSoft was utilized for all therapeutic modules for a 2-year cohort of pharmacy students. Prior to the students final capstone module, a pretest was given to the students (n=154). The pretest concept for the capstone module had existed for 15 years. This is the first time the pretest was constructed from the cohort of exams for those students. Previous pretests were derived by faculty teaching in the modules. The current pretest was based on evidence from ExamSoft categories and performance reports that allowed module coordinators to select questions which demonstrated a weak knowledge base for the class. The average score on the pretest was a 32% compared to past years performance of 55 to 63% averages. This demonstrated that the college did not have a good plan to help students remediate in their areas of weakness. If the student passed the module, they moved on to the next module but did not master material. The capstone course coordinator then created a dynamic class schedule that immediately took this information into account in designing the 7 week module for spring semester. The capstone module faculty created review materials on Moodle with review quizzes on ExamSoft. Any student that had a red weakness area on their Strengths and Opportunities report was required to do the review material and quizzes for each area. Any student could take advantage of this opportunity as well. Student progress was tracked in ExamSoft and Moodle. Post-test results are pending an April 17th exam and will be available for this session. The results of this cohort has started discussion on how to remediate students sooner in the modules. In addition, the faculty continue to use the rationale sections of the exam to provide immediate feedback to students on exams. The use of ExamSoft categories as well as student reports has created an opportunity to dialogue with students and faculty to improve student outcomes.

2) Discuss the use of ExamSoft categories to pull relevant data for assessing outcomes

Two useful documents will be shared in this webinar. The first is a five-part Pre-Evaluation Worksheet. The second document is a five-category rubric for evaluating teaching performance of online instructors. The rubric could be used as a self-evaluation for faculty, as part of a peer review evaluation, or as part of an academic administrator’s evaluation of faculty. These documents are sharable and editable. Use these documents to start a faculty evaluation process or to build upon your existing process.

A wound is a break in the integrity of the skin or tissues, which may be associated with disruption of the structure and function.
Healing is the body’s response to injury in an attempt to restore normal structure and functions.
Healing can occur in two ways: Regeneration and Repair
There are 4 phases of wound healing: hemostasis, inflammation, proliferation, and remodeling. This document also describes the mechanism of wound healing. Factors that affect healing include infection, uncontrolled diabetes, poor nutrition, age, anemia, the presence of foreign bodies, etc.
Complications of wound healing like infection, hyperpigmentation of scar, contractures, and keloid formation.

IMPACT Assessment (Cohort 2)

- 2. Assessment of IMPACT • IMPACT is currently an experiment. • As with any experiment, we need to collect and analyze data to find out what the results are. • Dimensions of the IMPACT assessment: • Effect on students • Effect on faculty • Effect on classes
- 3. The Research Questions • (FLC): What is the effectiveness of the professional development aspect of IMPACT and embedded support for course redesign and implementation? • (Classroom): What is the effect on pedagogical approaches used? • (Student Success): What effect do IMPACT courses have on student success and retention? • (Faculty): What long-term results occur in practices by faculty, departments, institution?
- 4. Instruments • Faculty: • interview before FLC series • survey after FLC series • interview after implementation of redesign • course questionnaire 3-4 times during semester • survey 2 semesters after implementation • Department Head: • interview 2 semesters after IMPACT implementation • Other Faculty in Department • survey 2 semesters after IMPACT implementation

Instruments • Students: • end-of-course questions keyed to faculty-designed learning objectives • student scores on exam items keyed to faculty- designed learning objectives • student grades in courses following IMPACT course • student retention statistics • Classroom: • course questionnaire weekly during semester (1/4 of students per week or 40, whichever number is larger, randomly selected) • observations
- 6. Your Role • Your active participation in assessment is critical. • Timeliness is important for: • participating in interviews • responding to surveys • facilitating student participation in assessment activities • Necessary: your active participation in developing exam and survey items keyed to your learning objectives.
