Assessment of IMPACT
• IMPACT is currently an experiment.
• As with any experiment, we need to
  collect and analyze data to find out what
  the results are.
• Dimensions of the IMPACT assessment:
 • Effect on students
 • Effect on faculty
 • Effect on classes
The Research Questions
• (FLC): What is the effectiveness of the
  professional development aspect of IMPACT
  and embedded support for course redesign
  and implementation?
• (Classroom): What is the effect on
  pedagogical approaches used?
• (Student Success): What effect do IMPACT
  courses have on student success and
  retention?
• (Faculty): What long-term results occur in
  practices by faculty, departments, institution?
Instruments
• Faculty:
  • interview before FLC series
  • survey after FLC series
  • interview after implementation of redesign
  • course questionnaire 3-4 times during semester
  • survey 2 semesters after implementation
• Department Head:
  • interview 2 semesters after IMPACT
    implementation
• Other Faculty in Department
  • survey 2 semesters after IMPACT implementation
Instruments
• Students:
  • end-of-course questions keyed to faculty-designed
    learning objectives
  • student scores on exam items keyed to faculty-
    designed learning objectives
  • student grades in courses following IMPACT course
  • student retention statistics
• Classroom:
  • course questionnaire weekly during semester (1/4
    of students per week or 40, whichever number is
    larger, randomly selected)
  • observations

  critical.
• Timeliness is important for:
 • participating in interviews
 • responding to surveys
 • facilitating student participation in assessment
   activities
• Necessary: your active participation in
  developing exam and survey items keyed
  to your learning objectives.

IMPACT Assessment (Cohort 2)

  • 2. Assessment of IMPACT • IMPACT is currently an experiment. • As with any experiment, we need to collect and analyze data to find out what the results are. • Dimensions of the IMPACT assessment: • Effect on students • Effect on faculty • Effect on classes
  • 3. The Research Questions • (FLC): What is the effectiveness of the professional development aspect of IMPACT and embedded support for course redesign and implementation? • (Classroom): What is the effect on pedagogical approaches used? • (Student Success): What effect do IMPACT courses have on student success and retention? • (Faculty): What long-term results occur in practices by faculty, departments, institution?
  • 4. Instruments • Faculty: • interview before FLC series • survey after FLC series • interview after implementation of redesign • course questionnaire 3-4 times during semester • survey 2 semesters after implementation • Department Head: • interview 2 semesters after IMPACT implementation • Other Faculty in Department • survey 2 semesters after IMPACT implementation

Instruments • Students: • end-of-course questions keyed to faculty-designed learning objectives • student scores on exam items keyed to faculty- designed learning objectives • student grades in courses following IMPACT course • student retention statistics • Classroom: • course questionnaire weekly during semester (1/4 of students per week or 40, whichever number is larger, randomly selected) • observations
  • 6. Your Role • Your active participation in assessment is critical. • Timeliness is important for: • participating in interviews • responding to surveys • facilitating student participation in assessment activities • Necessary: your active participation in developing exam and survey items keyed to your learning objectives.
