An immediate denture is a complete or partial denture inserted immediately following the extraction of natural teeth. It maintains the patient's appearance and jaw structure. While it reduces postoperative pain by protecting extraction sites, immediate dentures are more challenging to fabricate and require additional appointments. There are two types: conventional immediate dentures can become long-term prostheses after relining, while interim immediate dentures are replaced after healing with new dentures.

INTRODUCTION

• An immediate denture is a complete denture or partial denture
inserted on the same day, immediately following the removal of
natural teeth.

INDICATIONS

• Any patient whose remaining teeth are indicated for extraction is a
potential candidate for an immediate denture.
• However such a candidate must be physically and mentally be
prepared to undergo the increased number of visits to the dentist as
well as greater cost.

CONTRAINDICATIONS

• Any patient unable to undergo multiple extractions. Example: blood
dyscrasias and cardiac disease.
• In acute or periodontal infection.
• Patients incapable of showing responsibility towards the treatment
e.g. senile, mentally retarded and indifferent patients.
• Extensive bone loss adjacent to remaining teeth.

PROS AND CONS

Advantages:-
• Maintenance of a patient's appearance
• Muscle tone, vertical dimension of occlusion, jaw relationship, and face
height can be maintained. The tongue will not spread out as a result of
tooth loss.
• Less postoperative pain is likely to be encountered because the
extraction sites are protected.
• Adaptation easier. Speech and mastication are rarely compromised,
and nutrition can be maintained.

PROS AND CONS

Disadvantages:-
• Immediate dentures are a more challenging.
• The anterior ridge undercut that is caused by the presence of the
remaining teeth may interfere with the impression procedures.
• No denture tooth try-in in precludes knowing what the denture will
actually look like on the day of insertion.
• More chair time, additional appointments, and therefore increased
costs.

1. Conventional Immediate Denture:-
• A complete or removable partial denture fabricated for placement
immediately after removal of natural teeth.
• The posterior teeth would be extracted and allowed to heal before the
anterior teeth extraction.
• Denture is intended to be relined to serve as a long term prosthesis.

2. Interim Immediate Denture:-
• All remaining teeth are extracted on the same day and the immediate
denture is inserted on the same day.
• After healing a second new complete denture is to be fabricated as
long term prosthesis.

POST OPERATIVE INSTRUCTIONS

1. Dentures should not be removed for 24 hours after insertion.
2. Ice packs may be used to reduce swelling.
3. A liquid or soft diet is prescribed.
4. Smoking should be avoided.
