After observing how high interest rates trapped poor villagers in cycles of poverty, Yunus provided small, low-interest "micro-loans" directly to the poor. In 1983, he formed Grameen Bank based on principles of trust and solidarity between borrowers. Today, Grameen Bank has over 8 million borrowers in Bangladesh, with a 97% loan repayment rate. Yunus and Grameen Bank were awarded the 2006 Nobel Peace Prize for their efforts to create economic and social development through microcredit.

Community enterprises function like businesses to fund their social goals through earned income from sales, social loans and investments, and grants or donations. They are stakeholder-driven and involve community members, employees, local residents, and partner organizations. Examples provided include Barcelona FC, Oxfam, Mondragon, and Coin Street.

In summary, social entrepreneurs think differently than traditional entrepreneurs in the following key ways:
- They prioritize social/environmental mission over profits. Impact is the bottom line.
- They see markets primarily as a means to scale impact, not maximize income/returns. Price and value are determined based on benefiting stakeholders, not maximizing profits.
- Success is measured by social/environmental outcomes like lives improved, not just financial returns. Metrics track multiple bottom lines of people, planet and profits.
- Stakeholders include those benefiting from as well as investing in the venture

Bill Drayton is a renowned social entrepreneur who founded Ashoka in 1980. He was inspired by Gandhi and the Civil Rights Movement to address income inequality through social entrepreneurship. Ashoka identifies and supports social entrepreneurs with solutions to social issues. It started as a roundtable discussion called Ashoka Table while Drayton was at Harvard. Today, Ashoka has helped implement solutions reaching over 174,000 people on average. The majority of Ashoka fellows are youth under 20, as Drayton believes youth are key to driving social change.

Poverty is a complex problems and will not be solved if we let the governments and the rich address it while we watch and send thoughts and prayers.
If status quo does not solve problems, perhaps we need to all try to do our part and look for solutions, try for our local community. It take effort and courage to bring about change.

Francis Ngai, the founder and CEO of the Hong Kong Social Venture Fund, spoke at the event about innovating social change. The Social Venture Fund is Hong Kong's first venture philanthropy organization, founded in 2007. It focuses on providing financial and non-financial support to social purpose organizations through an equity-based model and has mobilized over 35,000 hours of support from 300+ professional volunteers.

TakingITGlobal is looking for young people aged 15-30 to design and implement community service projects through their RisingYouth program. The program provides grants up to $1500 to fund projects, as well as ongoing support. Projects are intended to empower youth to address local challenges and share their stories of community impact. Changing The World
- 3. What they could do to have the Maximum positive impact on the world… and actually did it?
- 4. This is me.
- 5. In 2000 I created “World Reconciliation Day” And met my hero!
- 6. But “there was still something missing.” So, I decided to work on a new project
- 7. I wanted to help the poorest people
- 8. I found them at the bottom of the Human Development Index
- 9. In 2004, I went to Mali
- 10. I decided to help a village in the north they were poorer than people in south Really poor poor
- 11. There were many ways to help but… What’s the “best” solution?
- 12. Do the things that will have the MAXIMUM POSITIVE IMPACT
- 13. For this village of 1,400 people, It was their first health center
- 14. and electricity (solar) for the first time Yes, that’s me.
- 15. Shouldn’t we ask the IMPACT question for every nonprofit project? Or…for life in general?
- 16. What if everyone lived their lives in way that had Maximum positive impact on the world?
- 17. Sounds like a life full of purpose!
- 18. But, maybe devoid of fun?
- 20. But… if you only pursue your passion, “there’s something missing. Purpose!”

- 25. We will do it by helping individuals maximize their impact on their own lives and on the world. How?
