Muhammad Yunus is a social entrepreneur from Bangladesh who pioneered microcredit and microfinance through Grameen Bank. After observing how high interest rates trapped poor villagers in cycles of poverty, Yunus provided small, low-interest "micro-loans" directly to the poor. In 1983, he formed Grameen Bank based on principles of trust and solidarity between borrowers. Today, Grameen Bank has over 8 million borrowers in Bangladesh, with a 97% loan repayment rate. Yunus and Grameen Bank were awarded the 2006 Nobel Peace Prize for their efforts to create economic and social development through microcredit.
