This lecture will be structured workshop-style, in collaboration with Clean Care and Public Inc. Students will be introduced to these two real-life social enterprises and have the opportunity to better understand the social problems these organizations are trying to solve and the challenges they are facing in doing so. This workshop is the first step in analyzing the two beneficiary organizations as part of developing proposed solutions, which make up the final assignment.

Enterprise development is a multi-faceted and complex endeavour with simple solutions. One of the greatest challenges it faces is the satisfaction of competing agendas of multiple partners, each monitoring different key performance indicators and reporting on different time-lines to different stakeholders.

Small enterprises, both locally and internationally, experience many similar challenges and some unique ones that shape their structure, modus
operandi, rate of success, reason for existence, size, and ability to create jobs.
These factors include legislative concerns, access to funding, government/political involvement, community requirements, availability/lack of skills, resources, infrastructure, and markets. Comparisons can be made between South Africa and some Latin American countries, which become even more interesting when considering first-world nations and how such obstacles are being resolved.

The asset-based and community-driven approach to development espouses the belief that communities can take the lead in identifying and managing their own priorities; empowering communities to genuinely take ownership of their development. Put simply, the approach argues that less is achieved by identifying 'needs', and rather the emphasis should be on the 'assets' in any given community.
