This document discusses sustainability and the need for convergence in design and systems to better address sustainability challenges. It provides a brief history of human civilization from the Renaissance to the current Digital Revolution. It then summarizes the collapse of Atlantic cod stocks in 1992 when overfishing led Canada to declare a moratorium. The key lessons were the impacts of technology, ecological uncertainty, and the tragedy of the commons where individual interests overwhelmed the collective interest. The conclusion calls for the design community to learn from this and start coordinating approaches before environmental deterioration becomes too great.
