Paper no. 201 Indian English Literature Pre-Independence topic is "Exploring Human Psychology through R. K. Narayan's Short Story 'An Astrologer's Day'".
I am sharing 'Paper 1 An Astrologerโs Day' with you.pptxAamena Rangwala
ย
The document summarizes R.K Narayan's short story "An Astrologer's Day" which explores themes of blind faith in astrological predictions and superstition. It discusses how the story focuses on the life of a man who takes up the job of an astrologer despite having no actual knowledge of astrology himself. It also reveals a twist where his real past is disclosed which explains why he left his village and settled elsewhere under a new identity. The summary notes how the story portrays the realities and ironies of people who make a living by posing as astrologers in Indian villages through the use of dramatic elements and third person narration.
In this presentation, I'll be uncovering the manipulation tactics used by the astrologer in R.K. Narayan's 'An Astrologer's Day.' I'll walk you through the clever methods he employs to deceive his clients and decode the secrets behind his tricks.
Astrology means different things to different people. Some individuals consider astrology to be the future's prediction, while others see it as a guide to daily life encounters. Basically, Astrology is composed of horoscope signs, the 12 zodiac signs. The practice of numerology as a part of astrology has been going on since the distant past. Nowadays, most astrologers use Tarot cards too.

Dhanurmas cosmic physiology dr. shriniwas janardan kashalikarshriniwas kashalikar
ย
The document discusses cosmic physiology, which sees individual human existence as part of the cosmos and vice versa. It states that everything in the universe influences one another, including the movements of celestial bodies and their effects on human bodies, cognition, and behavior. It argues that certain periods are better suited for physical, sexual, or intellectual activities. While some describe certain times as auspicious or inauspicious, the document asserts that different periods are simply better for different things. It notes that Dhanurmas, from December 16, 2009 to January 13-14, 2010, opens the floodgates of enlightenment and should not be seen as inauspicious but as unsuitable for some mundane activities.

Magic and miracles in ghana a critical examinationAlexander Decker
ย
This document examines the concepts of magic and miracles in Ghanaian society. It begins by providing definitions of magic from Western and African perspectives, noting that magic involves influencing events through objects, words, or powers to produce a desired effect. The document discusses two main types of magic - imitative magic, where similarities produce likeness, and contagious magic, where contact allows influence. Magic can be "good" or "protective" and aim to help, or "evil" and aim to harm. The document argues that in Ghanaian society, protective magic is important to ward off malevolent spirits and their effects on people, farms, and property. The overall purpose is to analyze the differences between magic and miracles in
Sigmund Freud introduced psychoanalysis in the 19th century, emphasizing unconscious forces and conflicts in early childhood that shape personality. Psychoanalysis includes the id, ego, and superego. The id contains desires, the ego mediates reality, and the superego determines morality. Freud proposed four stages of psychosexual development from birth to adulthood. Sheldon proposed three body types - endomorph, mesomorph, and ectomorph - that correlate with personality traits. Carl Rogers' humanistic approach emphasized self-actualization and unconditional positive regard. Albert Bandura's social learning theory explained how behavior is learned through observation and modeling. Raymond Cattell developed trait theory involving surface and source personality traits. Astrology has impacted human life since ancient times. People noticed that some lived as kings while others were slaves, and farmers had varying crop yields despite equal labor. They sought answers to these differences, and astrology provided explanations. Astrology is a scientific study of celestial movements and their effects on individuals and communities. Various cultures have incorporated astrology into daily life through practices like horoscope readings, palmistry, face reading, tarot cards, and Chinese and Vedic astrology. While astrology can positively impact careers and lives when used properly, it can also negatively impact people by making them nervous, tense, and lazy based on unrealistic predictions.
Pseudopsychology refers to pseudoscientific formulations of psychology. Although psychology has increasingly become associated with cognitive science in recent times, there is still no general unifying theory of psychology. This makes the demarcation problem in the field more difficult to assess. However, there are some schools of thought and erroneous claims that have been widely rejected within the field today. Psychology has also been applied to numerous fields and occupations, leading it to be rampantly used, misused, and abused by a wide variety of professionals and amateurs alike.
This document discusses the concept and nature of personality. It defines personality as a relatively stable set of characteristics that influence an individual's behavior and thinking patterns. Freud believed that the adult personality was the end result of accumulated childhood experiences, and how they were processed. In dealing with comprehensiveness, a theorist question should be whether or not all aspects of personality is covered or does it just focus on particular subjects that are easily explained by their system of theories. Freudโs theory of personality was described as exceptional in comprehensiveness as it addressed a wide range of issues such as, โliterature, of mind, the relationship between persons and society, dreams, sexuality, symbolism, the nature of human development, therapies for psychological changeโ (Cervone & Pervin 2013, p. 157).
The whole psychodynamic approach was based on Freud's ideas. The human behavior and feelings are greatly affected by motives which are unconscious. Freud once said that the unconscious mind of the human being is the primary source of their behaviors (Kroger, 2006). Adult behaviors are rooted in their childhood experiences. According to psychodynamic theory, "events in our childhood have a great influence on our adult lives, shaping our personality. Events that occur in childhood can remain in the unconscious, and cause problems as adults.โ Psychodynamic theory views that the human behavior is greatly influenced by the unconscious factors which human beings have no control over.

This document summarizes the story of Ajamila from the Bhagavatam. It describes how Ajamila was born a brahmana but fell from his position by marrying a prostitute and engaging in sinful activities like cheating and stealing to support his family. When he was on his deathbed, fearful messengers came to take him to the lord of death for punishment. The full story explains how Ajamila was saved from this fate and learned important spiritual truths. The document provides context on near-death experiences and evidence that the mind and soul can separate from the body.

This document discusses Dadaji's views on Bibhuti and Kaivalya as explained by Srimat Anirvan, a renowned philosopher. It seeks to clarify the true meaning of these terms according to Dadaji, as they have traditionally been misunderstood. Regarding Bibhuti, Dadaji says it means "one who is full" rather than referring to miracles. Anirvan explains that Bibhuti indicates the potential for manifestation within truth itself. Regarding Kaivalya, Dadaji says it refers to the highest expressible stage of "only-ness" or singleness of Satyanarayana, beyond description. Anirvan provides further context around these terms from Vedic scriptures
This document summarizes experimental research on dreaming. It discusses how dreaming has been studied experimentally since the 19th century by examining dream content and frequency. A key finding is that rapid eye movement sleep was proposed as the physiological basis of dreaming, but this was later challenged as it did not fully explain dream characteristics. The research concluded that understanding dreaming requires a focus on individual experiences and unconscious processes. Participants in one study included men and women of varying ages, and findings showed gender differences in dream content. Overall, the research suggests a psychoanalytic perspective could provide new insights into dreaming by addressing concepts like personal meaning and unconscious memory.
Carl Rogers developed a humanistic theory of personality that focused on an individual's potential for positive growth. According to Rogers, every person has an innate drive towards self-actualization. He believed people's core nature is essentially positive and that through unconditional positive regard and empathy, individuals can achieve their full potential. Rogers' theory challenged the prevailing psychoanalytic theories and emphasized an individual's capacity for free will and personal growth in a supportive environment.
As a way of understanding ourselves, this archetype quiz was built based on the 12 Jungian archetypes developed by renowned psychologist Carl Jung. With its soaring popularity after New Age spirituality, this framework of understanding how the human mind operates has become part of pop culture. Despite such, not all have a good grasp of what archetypes actually are, and what each archetype actually means. While a lot of resources online will discuss the 12 archetypes, only a few have genuinely discussed its foundations

ordinary astrologer who suddenly faces past life in the present drastic
situation. The story has a twist in the tale. The otherwise adventure
less life of the astrologer suddenly poses a grave problem from his
past life and demands alertness to tackle the situation.
The story describes of a single day in the lives of the sleepy town of Malgudi.
The story also deals with the darker side of human nature with its
hypocrisies, shrewdness, revengeful nature and selfishness. The
characters in the story are no exception to these qualities of human
nature. Finally all is well that ends well with the astrologer coming out
with flying colors in his examination of befooling his opponent, saving
his life and also saw to it that he does not face the man again in future.

Deception:
The act of causing someone to accept as
true or valid what is false or invalid : the
act of deceiving. (โDeception Definition
& Meaningโ)
Deception is a major theme in An
Astrologer's Day. The astrologer
deceives his clients by pretending to
have supernatural powers, while the
stranger who confronts him reveals a
hidden identity. This theme highlights
the complexity of human behavior and
the power of perception.
7. Human Nature :
An Astrologer's Day also explores the
complexities of human nature. The
characters in the story are driven by their
desires, fears, and motivations, which are
shaped by cultural and social factors. This
theme highlights the diversity and
richness of human experience.
Self-actualization :
Self-actualization is a key concept in
humanistic psychology and is explored
in An Astrologer's Day.
The astrologer's journey towards self discovery and personal growth is a central
theme of the story. This theme highlights the importance of fulfilling one's potential
and finding meaning in life.
8. This effect can provide a partial explanation
for the widespread acceptance of some
paranormal beliefs and practices, such as
astrology, fortune telling, aura reading, and
some types of personality tests.
Psychics, horoscopes, magicians, palm
readers, and crystal ball gazers make use of
the Barnum Effect when they convince
people that their description of them is
highly special and unique and could never
apply to anyone else. (Vohs)
Barnum Effect :
9. Non-believers sometime find uncannily accurate hits in
their predictions. This irony could be explained with the
Forer effect (also called or the 'Barnum effect'), a
psychological bias originating from an individual's
affinity to descriptions touching his/her personality. This
bias (called the personal validation fallacy) prompts a
person to take descriptions which are vague and general
enough to apply to a wide range of people, to be tailored
specifically for them. (Komath)
In short, Forer convinced people that it is possible to
read the character successfully, without any additional
divine powers. This personal validation fallacy works
behind the widespread acceptance of astrology and
other practices like palmistry and fortune-
telling.(Komath)
10. Confirmation Bias:
People tend to seek out and remember information that confirms
their existing beliefs. If a horoscope prediction seems to align with
their experiences, they are more likely to remember it and consider
it accurate while ignoring contradictory information.
Psychological Comfort:
Astrology offers people a form of psychological comfort and
reassurance. It can serve as a coping mechanism for individuals
seeking guidance or a sense of purpose in their lives.
Wishful Thinking:
People may believe in astrology because they want it to be true.
They hope that the positions of celestial bodies can provide insight
into their future or validate their personal characteristics.
11. Desire for Control
Astrology can provide a sense of control and predictability in an uncertain world.
Believers may turn to horoscopes and astrological advice to make decisions or find
comfort during challenging times.
Desired control is the degree of influence that an individual desires over any subject,
circumstance, or relationship.
This can apply to romantic, non-romantic, professional, and sales contexts. (Mullins)
12. According to a National Science Foundation Poll, more than half of 18- to 24-year-olds
believe/are willing to accept astrology as a science. That means the expert advice to avoid
big decisions might resonate with todayโs young consumers during retrograde. (โPublic
assessment of astrology, by respondent characteristic: 1979โ2018โ)
Superstition and belief in the modern world :

"The Believers" (1987)
This film explores the dangers of blind
faith, cult practices, and superstitions
within a thriller and horror narrative.
15. PK (2014):
PK," features an alien who arrives on Earth and questions various societal beliefs,
including religion and superstitions, making a commentary on blind faith.
16. List of some astrological beliefs from various countries around the world:
โ Chinese Astrology (Zodiac Signs)
โ Vedic Astrology (India)
โ Mayan Astrology (Central America)
โ Western Astrology (United States and Europe)
โ Tibetan Astrology (Himalayan Region)
โ Arabian Astrology (Middle East)
โ Babylonian Astrology (Ancient Mesopotamia)

โ Incan Astrology (South America)
โ Yoruba Astrology (Nigeria)
โ Native American Astrology (Various Tribes)

(The list has been provided by ChatGPT.)
17. Conclusion :
Because the predictions of astrologers are
generally vague, a Popperian would assert that
the real problem with astrology is that it is not
falsifiable: astrologers can not make predictions
which if unfulfilled would lead them to give up
their theory. Hence because it is unfalsifiable,
astrology is unscientific. (Thagard)
