This document provides several suggestions for how an individual named AT could make a career decision that allows him to feel in control of his life. The most obvious suggestions include applying to interested jobs, starting his own company, freelancing, improving his resume and cover letter, and networking. Other ideas range from more practical short-term options to disruptive or imaginative long-shot solutions, like getting unlimited funds, controlling natural forces, or using magic.

1. How might we get AT to make a
career decision that makes him feel
like he is in control of his life?

2. Most obvious
• Apply to jobs he is interested in
• Start his own company
• Continue to do freelance work
• Just accept something and try it out
• Redo his cover letter and resume to target them to opportunities he is
most interested in
• Make a short list of companies/organizations that he would like to work
with
• Post his resume on job sites
• Ask his grad school professors for career suggestions – consult with their
career counseling team
• Talk to former employers and ask for advice/ask them to put in a good
word
• Get good references for jobs – find short-term job opportunity if they will
sponsor him

3. Add, remove, modify (most obvious)
• Approach another company and start a business
partnership
• Make marketing materials to get the word out
about his services
• Get a job that will sponsor him to live where he
wants to be and then figure things out
• Make a list of the top things that he needs to feel
satisfied in his job and start generating ideas on
how to achieve them
• Get a head hunter to help him get placed in a job

4. 5-year old solution
• Do what your peers/family are doing
• Act out the career you want to be and just become it, make
whatever career you want
• Problem solve using resources that they have access to
• Draw a picture about their career and where they see
themselves in future
• Sing a song about your dream career
• Make a game where the winner makes it to their career of
choice
• Driving video game to find his job at the end of the race
• Not pick just one job, have many depending on the time of
day and what they feel like doing

5. W/ unlimited funds
• Do whatever he wants, wherever he wants
• Travel to the country he wants to live in the most and find a job once there, taking the time he
needs to do it
• Get a new degree, increase skills to be more marketable
• Volunteer his services and call all the shots – work in areas he most wants to because he has the
funds to do this and not worry about other things
• Host dinner for all the big media players to get them interested in his work and make them want to
hire him
• Find someone who will invest in his company rather than be a freelancer
• Get a personal assistant to help him figure things out for him, make his job of finding a job easier
• Build a dream home in Canada, buy an expensive car, cook in his free time, and spend time
outdoors, and work only a few hours in the day on a schedule of his choice
• Create a database where he puts in his information and it gives him advice on what to do and what
his options will be
• Create a personal career planner and have them do the hard work of finding a job
• Get someone to make a movie about him and his work – promotional video that is seen around the
world – motivating story about how he makes it big

6. Free
• Get a job offer and accept it provided that all relocation expenses are paid
• Ask a friend to pass his resume around and refer him to employers
• Post his information on LinkedIn and other social network sites
• Give free talks about his experiences, become a motivational speaker and
get others interested in his work that way
• Talk to the school career counselor
• Collect information about potential employers
• Attend job career fairs that are free
• Ask friend to review his job application (cover letter and resume and give
feedback)
• Sign up to get automatic job announcements as they get posted
• Find a fortune teller and ask them what his future holds
• Start dating someone and follow them wherever they go
• Find a sugar mama/daddy 

7. Control over forces of nature
• Remove the visa process – people can live and work wherever they
want to, whenever they want to
• Change places for a day with a big media producer
• Go back in time and be the producer/manager he admires most
• Drop by Canada for one day and see if he likes it
• Pull together all the jobs in the world that match his skills and
interests in one place and let him interact with it
• See into the future and predict if his home country will change,
becoming more structured and organized
• Make his home country more structured and organized – make a
wish for this and have it come true
• Cast a spell and tell someone that they need to hire him –
hypnotize them with this subliminal message and make sure that
they know the conditions he wants as an employee/employer

8. Most practical
• Continuing to do freelance work is easiest since
he has many technical skills and knows
management, too. He is instantly his own boss (as
long as he continues to find clients who will hire
him). The only dilemma is possibly not getting
sponsorship for this sort of work (visa) in which
case he needs to return to his home country but
at least from there he can take time he needs to
make his next move and perhaps make a
difference in his home now that he has new
experiences and insight.

9. Most disruptive
• Getting someone to fund his own company in
Canada and not requiring a visa to do it would
have a great impact on helping him to achieve
his personal and professional goals without
the added logistical/administrative limitations.

10. My favorite
• I like to combining ideas into my favorite, either casting
a spell and hypnotizing the person/company you want
to hire you so that they do (he would host a dinner for
them to draw all the big names in)  OR, creating a
game that puts him in the driver’s seat and on the race
course there are milestones, and he logs his progress,
has a personal assistant to help him along the way and
coach him, and he has one place to collect all his career
decision-making information, his very own “Career
Central” – he needs to complete the course by Dec
2013 or his mission will be aborted  (this is when his
current student visa expires and he has to make a
decision about his next stage in life)
